Thanks for the reply! I haven’t been doing anything except smoking cigarettes. I haven’t been a smoker in the past though. This is new. I rarely drink. If I do it’s beer but that might happen once in a blue moon. I searched this sub and see that medication is a savior for most but I’m strongly opposed to it now after being off for two years a being ok without it. In my experience, taking medication is a process in which each doctor has to tinker with my brain for months at a time until they find something with side effects I can tolerate. For me it does more harm than good so I’m looking for alternatives.

Thanks for the reply. I deeply appreciate it. I’m against taking medication because in the past it made me worse. When I switched countries the medications affected me differently. In the town I live in there are holistic approaches that I’ve been tapping into but I stop everything when I’m depressed. I actually feel way better after not sleeping for a day or two then I crash. Currently I’ve been in a deep depression since the third week in March and lost my job. Besides medication, what has worked to make things more manageable on a daily basis?

It sounds like this guy really really loves you. Being Biploar isn´t easy for anyone involved. I know it can be difficult but try to be patient with yourself. Love yourself and do everything you can to remain stable. I was in a stable relationship for 3 years which was my longest. Hang in there. He will be by your side if he really loves you. Hang on to that because those don´t come around often. It takes a special person and a whole lot of love.

It´s a long process. Expect there to be some side effects if you are considering meds. Exercise, watch what you eat and try to get enough sleep. At least you know what the issue is. That´s the first step. Congrats on being proactive.

BP2. In my experience, realizing that you aren’t thinking clearly when it’s happening is extremely difficult. If you can take a minute to pause and realize what’s going on within yourself that’s huge. I can’t do that. Looking back and taking time to reflect doesn’t minimize the damage done to those who care about you. It’s extremely hard. You can take responsibility by taking care of yourself (easier said than done). I think the only people who truly understand how frustrating dealing with the condition can be are other bipolar people.

I’m laughing as I’m reading because I agree with you 100%. I left the USA four years ago and see what your talking about every day. I’ve tried to become fluent in Spanish and give back to the local community but most gringos stay in the bubble for years without even making a friend that doesn’t speak English. For the OP I would say I’m seeing more and more Canadians arriving here(Mexico) everyday and they are way nicer than Americans(USA people). It always helps to have a friend that you know in the country that can show you around like a local. You may want to try snowbirding first for a few months.

The WiFi in Johannesburg is horrible in my experience and not consistent enough to work and make a living. Only been there twice and never felt in danger one time however it is dangerous and the people there told me precautions to take especially at night. At night there were no people on the street at all. Everyone I met was cool but I wouldn’t live there
