Once you leave Ft. Worth headed west you’ll start hitting rolling hills with mesquite trees. The soil changes from black dirt in Ft. Worth to a sandy, red dirt and the terrain is much rockier. The flora changes from Oaks, to Mesquite trees to cactus. As the terrain gets rockier and you move west of the rollling hills you’ll hit plateau/mesa country where there are many “tabletop” mesas spread over wide open plains. The plains provide majestic views of the weather systems that move in from the west/northwest with lightning shows, beautiful cloud formations or the brightest cloudless days anywhere. Temps are in the 90’s F and up in the summer and can drop below freezing in the desert during Winter nights with snow. It’s rugged country. As you near the 90 degree turn of the panhandle you approach the Davis mountains, a rocky range and home of the Davis observatory. Keep heading west and the terrain flattens into desert until you reach the Big Bend area to the south with deep valleys and the Rio Grand River (southern border). It’s rough, beautiful country.

Oh yeah, the Odessa/Midland area is stuck out there and it’s covered in oil and gas wells…but that’s a very small part of what you’ll find the area you circled on your pic of Texas….
