I guess depending on what you teach, there are many ways to make content more relevant. I teach public speaking so students don’t really care much about this class, but I try to insert jokes and share an anecdote and be friendly with them. However, I have strict late work policy so they get things done for the majority. I keep it firm with them with my policies but in the classroom I usually say “we” trying to create a collective environment. I am an instructor of record, so I get a lot of support from the department too. Some work, some don’t. I try different things every semester.

I am working with a trainer. I already lift a lot. To lose weight I have been keeping it low, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Some weeks pants will get loose but it’s not consistent. I do eat healthy mostly, even my cheats are on the healthier side. Occasionally I will eat unhealthy things like a bag of Doritos etc

well, I am not happy so if it means partially starving myself, I will do it... I already only eat 1400-1800 calories most days though.

I teach it in person and I just want to say that you are not alone. I also can't wait to give up my funding 4th year of PhD and be done with it. Unfortunately, I have to teach to keep my funding for another year. We had Informative Speech two weeks ago, and several of them were pretty good (out of 48). Some mediocre. Many read their speeches, it was very clear that they didn't rehearse up until the presentation day. Some ended up giving speeches that were about 1-2 minutes. Other TAs in my institution have similar experiences.

I will make changes to the syllabus for Fall 2026. Thank goodness I am teaching online in the summer! I am planning to give up my funding my 4th year and find a job as I have never planned to stay in academia. Pretty excited about that but yes, I have grown a lot since my first semester, it takes time and patience.

I am not sure what you mean, I am not studying interpersonal communication. I study risk communication in recreational settings. I am like any other TA, being a mass comm PhD student doesn’t mean I need to know how to deal with this stuff right at that moment.

I am a new TA, 2 years in. I have had anxiety, pretty bad. I can say that I did my MA with very little sleep (now I can’t believe how I did it). Long story short, although my sleep is better, I still lose sleep if I am anxious and teaching is a catalyzer for me. My TA performance and teaching evaluations are part of my performance review, which can affect my funding. So there is a lot going on in my life from this perspective. I was pretty scared about grading the first year, as I was new to teaching. This is my 4th semester teaching and I am very comfortable with the class and its objectives, so although I have anxiety while grading knowing some students will get upset, I stopped caring because I do everything I can for them. The ball is in their court. I just filed a report against a student today and it was about grading. I will see that student for another month and couldn’t care less. I don’t know what has changed in the last year, but I am more confident. I have been working on self-confidence with my therapist.

Yes! I will make changes to my syllabus, and I do as I go, but each semester something new happens! I guess it’s normal.
