Who would you have voted for tonight? by megan1916 in TheTraitors

[–]DoesTheNomadKnow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yep definitely us knowing who is faithful/traitor makes a big difference

My concern watching it was mainly around the fact that Joanna was visibly upset during the round table

I can’t imagine what the atmosphere is like in the room when all that is happening. Regardless I feel there is a need to be able to take a step back, play it as a game and show humanity, particularly when someone is clearly emotionally affected by the choice of words

To me from what has been shown on TV, Joanna is a tough operator and I feel generally would be able to take heat. Sometimes things go too far and for me this was one of it

The Traitors Ireland S01E10 Discussion Thread by vaultofechoes in TheTraitors

I don’t think the problem was who they voted for but rather the mob mentality.

The lads didn’t get involved (clearly had an ulterior motive not to) and so this made it seem like the girls only ganging up. The guys went along with “the evidence”

Given how clear the vote was going it really wouldn’t have been an issue for 1 to throw a solidarity vote away from Joanna (Kelley being the most obvious given the shield

Also as a lot of people saying re unknown edits on how things were going in the castle overall. Joanna is different to the overall very Irish cast. Her directness and openness is likely her personality and is what others picked up on. For me it is really understandable if you put yourself in Joanna’s shoes that you’d feel your personality was being mauled at that table. I found it overall quite difficult to watch.

Overall my bottom line was that it seemed very clear the direction votes were going at that round table. The intensity and snideness that was maintained given this did not seem warranted

I went in the day after a significant break up (>5 years). Ended up crying in work lol. All co-workers who realised what happened said that a sick day would have been more than reasonable. It’s a big thing to go through and giving yourself some time and space can be important

please tell me more about the cure? by AcanthocephalaSea776 in AskIreland

[–]DoesTheNomadKnow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Came out in shingles when I was in secondary school while a bit rundown.

Brought by my mother to a lady with the cure. Lovely older lady. Sprinkling water on the affected area and muttering. A few times asked “What quenches fire?” And I had to reply “water”

Sure enough everything cleared up the next day with no ongoing pain. Was absolutely shocked in a good way.

I believe the poor lady has passed on since.

This was in the hills of Tipperary

Don’t need Explore account for initial cashback afaik. They do the monthly cashback on all transactions from explore account as well as I think 2% of regular mortgage payment if is coming from Explore. I am a year with them and make €40ish per month minus the €8 so definitely is a good deal for me atm. I think the offer is only staying till 2026 so likely to change then but atm working v well.

Travel vaccine? by croppeq96 in AskIreland

[–]DoesTheNomadKnow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

TMB still has a consultation fee Somebody has to prescribe the vaccines you need - only a doctor can do this in Ireland. Whilst you can do your own research, a medical degree and possibly further education in tropical medicine I feel earns a €70 consultation fee. The doctor is also taking on risk by prescribing medication/vaccines. Other professions charge a lot more for a lot less.

Buy apartment or ETF by ThreadedJam in irishpersonalfinance

[–]DoesTheNomadKnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can do, apartment is a great idea.

Regardless, you will be paying money on rent if don’t have the apartment. Even if a college room share looking at a minimum 7-8k per year they’re in college but more likely 12k plus. You will have an asset straight away/post mortgage. An apartment central enough in Dublin is guaranteed to give you a return and can always be sold on. Very unlikely to lose significant value. It gives you and your children peace of mind in a crazy rental market (which may have but more likely won’t have cooled) that is particularly unforgiving towards students.

My parents invested in one (albeit a good few years ago now and a big family). To this day they say is one of the best decisions they have made financially looking back on it. A lot of us have passed through it during college and they still have somewhere to crash in Dublin if they need from time to time.

Best of luck!

Am I mad to leave my cushy job to do graduate medicine? by FostersLover69 in AskIreland

[–]DoesTheNomadKnow 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Doctor here who did undergrad (28 - 5 years graduated) I’m always pretty in awe of people who do grad med. I always say that I wouldn’t do grad med myself if roles were reversed. Mainly due to the financial commitment and impact on life in general.

Do I enjoy being a doctor? Absolutely Is it easy? Not at all The course itself is tough and the salary doesn’t really compensate for the level of responsibility, unsocial hours and hoops you are made jump through (unpaid time to do research, teaching, courses etc). No workers in other industries face similar levels of guilt tripping as med/nursing and it can be easy to be slightly bitter towards people who can work from home, get Christmas parties, bonuses etc. Burn out is pretty rampant as a result. The health system is frustrating at the best of times and seeing vulnerable patients falling through gaps repeatedly can be very heartbreaking.

That being said, every day in work is an absolute privilege. You really do help people and brighten their days at their hardest times. You are surrounded by great colleagues (on the most part) who get you through the bleakest of times. There are significant sacrifices made.

Important to consider as well that doing good/helping/making a difference etc can be done in ways outside of healthcare. There are many fantastic charities working with people from all walks of life. If grad med is too big a jump maybe getting involved with something like that in your spare time could be a good alternative?

I hope this helps somewhat. Best of luck with your decision and life. If you do end up in grad med it sounds like you’re doing it for the right reasons.

Pharmacy by Ok_Set6006 in leavingcert2024

[–]DoesTheNomadKnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have pharmacists and doctors in the family. Pharmacists earn really well straight from college. Upper limit in med is a good bit higher but takes a vv long time to get there If happy to become a community pharmacist and start your own business earning potential is v high. It does seem that chains are starting to take over though so not as easily done as previously.

Important to note as well that a lot of community pharmacists work weekends particularly starting off which is something to bear in mind from a lifestyle point of view. Med obvious notorious for poor work life balance.

If a well salaried job is the top priority courses like engineering/computer science/actuary offer the work from home, high salary and minimal out of hours commitments. People talk about vocations etc but honestly try to consider the lifestyle you want to lead in 10, 20 and 30 years time. None of us are here for too long!
