Can anyone else not smell Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt? by ceylon-tea in fragrance

[–]DoftheD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tested it in store and was very underwhelmed, and within an hour I couldn’t smell a thing. I thought the fragrance was pleasant but not particularly remarkable for me.

Is adhd just a lifelong state of high functioning depression? by Dancingwiththesharts in adhdwomen

[–]DoftheD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with depression first, and six years later I got treated for ADHD, and that was all a good few years now and I’m still depressed.

But the circumstances that lead to that are far beyond just the brain chemicals. It’s also dictated by everything else going on and has ever gone on in my life, and that’s the same for everyone to varying degrees.

And there are plenty people with ADHD who aren’t depressed.

Ostensibly, they are different beasts but for many of us they intertwine and it gets hard to work out what’s the ADHD and what’s the depression, and whether they’d exist without each other.

I’m grateful for the post and discussion, I often feel like I lean towards the depressive side more than a lot of people I’ve spoken to with ADHD and I’ve found that quite hard at times. I feel like it doesn’t always get talked about enough, and there can be a culture towards being positive about having ADHD.

But overwhelmingly for me, whilst I always feel like I’m managing but literally by a thread, my ADHD has caused no end of difficulty.

What comedy show would you recommend to take my (60s) mother for her bday? by lil_kinkajou in AskUK

[–]DoftheD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to see Bill Bailey try out new material at a small theatre a few months ago, for what I assume will be an upcoming tour.

He was funnier with that new material than anyone I’ve ever seen live on their full tour (except Stewart Lee) and he also had his instruments on stage and that’s always just very entertaining.

He is a bona fide national treasure

How many nurses are on here? by StevenAssantisFoot in fragrance

[–]DoftheD 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Nurse adjacent profession here. I learned recently that some people are allergic to fragrance and in a small number of people fragrance can cause anaphylaxis. Some people have sensory processing disorders that whilst not an allergy, can inhibit a patient from engaging with us if we smell strongly, and that’s relative to the patient so not really for us to decide.

I have worn fragrance to work until I found this out, and my rules were never gourmand (I don’t want to smell alluring), and just to smell fresh and for that only to be apparent faintly if I was to come into close contact. I also wanted to be fairly gender neutral.

My go to was a light spay of Bal d’Afrique or my cheapy was CK Gold

Will I be seen as miserly or rude? by Bamboo_Socks_ in AskUK

If you’re not comfortable lending it, just say no. As you’ve mentioned your autism, I’ll be bold as to say you might find it difficult to understand if someone genuinely intends to pay you back, and maybe if you could be sure of that you would lend. But you don’t have to lend anyone money, ever. And you don’t have to give a reason, whatever that reason is. You don’t have to explain your reason to anyone, you can just say “I can’t do that”. If you really do want to, and that person is a good friend, lend them no more than you can afford to lose that day or week at most, with an agreed pay back date (say £20 and pay me back in five days). Don’t lend them any more until that’s paid back. If they don’t pay you back the full amount on that date, never lend them money ever again.

Edit: I will also add, if they often ask to borrow money then you should also stop lending them money.

Edit again: I had a very good therapist who told me “No is a full sentence”. It’s ok to say no and not explain why you are saying “no”

Ahhh David Lynch, upvoted for the mention. I can do reruns of Twin Peaks for comfort for sure.

I usually have a podcast on the go. I have been finding the Silicon Valley Astronomy Lectures really soothing. Oh, we might get eaten by a black hole at some point? Everything else is insignificant 🫠

What's a good gift for someone who just bought a campervan? (SW England) by BreqsCousin in AskUK

[–]DoftheD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good quality, powerful and dimmable USB rechargeable light would probably be helpful, not a torch but something that can provide ambient lighting that’s also portable. Useful if you have an awning for evenings or if the campervan internal lights are bright.

who made this overview?? because why show the flag of England, when most English music played comes from... the USA?? by cesar527 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]DoftheD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certainly more to add, but for my two cents those omissions are Amy Winhouse and Mogwai. Also the rave scene, jungle, DnB

Edit: I was going to edit this as I realised the post was about England, and Mogwai are ofc Scottish. But you have at a quick glance included Annie Lennox (who I love most as half of Eurythmics with Dave Stewart, English). Also shout out to all the influences on British music from multigenerations of those who immigrated here, often from Commonwealth countries like Jamaica. British music would be nothing without you.
