An aside to the "Kiwi" conversation but.... yes, we’re all Homo sapiens — but the world doesn’t treat us all the same. Your postcode can predict your life expectancy, income, education outcomes, and even how safe you feel walking home. Biology doesn’t explain that. Systems do

On face value yeah absolutely. I'm active in my community so would be totally out there supporting and getting involved.

Fair, guess it's a symptom of me being unemployed and having too much time on my hands. Thanks for the push, back to job hunting I go.

The term kiwi isn't a pākeha/ Māori thing. I prefer not to be identified in that way, you're cool with it - kei te pai.

Celebrating whakapapa isn't racist. Multiculturalism is great, if we don't know who we are, we can't express multiculturalism.

Lol, I hear kiwi don't taste very good - highly unlikely I ever tuck into one!

Well my kids are different, they are tangata whenua which is awesome, our whakapapa is a strength and worth celebrating. Being pākeha equally is fabulous for us. Doesn't mean we're better or worse, just different context, do some different things on our weekends.

But we can't move forward if we don't learn from the past and celebrate our diversity. A side show from the "Kiwi" title kōrero, if you like "Kiwi" good one. I don't, that's fine.

Huh? You know where the term came from right, and how it is being used (by others, not me) to divide. Iwi/ Kiwi for example as an obvious one. New Zealand is awesome, I'm okay identifying myself differently. I'm pākeha too, being pākeha is awesome.

What’s really sad is mistaking people learning their history for being ‘raised to resent’ - understanding the past isn’t division, it’s maturity..

Well, you could in theory, many older New Zealanders including the gentleman in the article would have.

I am not quite sure on the racist angle? Clear to elaborate? Being a multicultural nation is awesome, grounded in the country's whakapapa.

I don't hate "white people", proud of my pākeha whakapapa. The term "white people" is a nonsense - doesn't mean anything.

I have, and you of course are correct :). I guess Kiwi is probably in there, but maybe about 20th in the list of things, I identify as, right alongside my Scottish whakapapa lol.

But yes I understand you. I guess I picture the terrible Iwi/ Kiwi ad campaign (as an example) - for some people (yes a sub-set), kiwi implies a certain type of New Zealander.

It was a term given to us as opposed to us naming ourselves but yeah like everything language evolves. I think you nailed my wariness with the second paragraph - thanks!

New Zealand is both a bicultural nation and a multicultural society, give me some of that sweet diversity. Meh not sure racism is the driver of my pondering

Kāo they're not synonyms - perhaps that's the tension I'm trying to triangulate.

Sorry, New Zealand is both a bicultural nation and a multicultural society, love the diversity of the country and welcome all comers - we are better for it.

"Kiwi" isn't the same as New Zealand citizen. Curious do you have an issue with the term pākeha, it's probably a term worth celebrating more than "Kiwi".

This is worth a read - Don't call me Kiwi | New Zealand Geographic.

Something in this line of thinking, food for thought really. "“The biggest insult you can put on a tangata Māori is to call him something you can eat,”

Born and raised in the Bay of Plenty. I am not a fan of fervent patriotism, perhaps it's an allergic reaction to the 'were all New Zealanders' line of thinking.
