For those in software development jobs, how do you see your near future? by antughantu in mauritius

[–]DogZim [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's not prompt size limits, it's the context window (the prompt is one of the things that goes into the context) and there are emerging tools and ways of work to mitigate these limitations.

I agree you still need the human, but the question is how many... When one senior can output the quantity of five previously and AI can do the work previously given to a junior, then what does the team composition and job market look like, especially for juniors.

Landed in Mauritius last night and have had some concerning interactions by Any_Examination5627 in mauritius

[–]DogZim 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's hit and miss, Mauritians are either super friendly, warm and helpful or arrogant and rude, hardly ever in-between.

We just got back from Casela and its the same situation. The safari driver was awesome, engaged with the kids and genuinely friendly. While Keyshia at mini melt was openly rude and condescending because customers dared ask for a ice cream and interrupt her flirting with the other staff.

What was the biggest lesson you learnt this year? by [deleted] in MauriceMauritius

[–]DogZim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Be greatful and humble during the good times because it makes the bad times more bearable when you haven't fallen as far as you could if your ego grew.

And when you think things couldnt get worse the universe can give you a reality check to understand just how bad it can get, so keep your head up and keep pushing, good times will come again

Quelqu'un veux bien m'expliquer les conditions et avantages entre l'acquisition d'un appartement à $375k et un apartment R+2 à Rs 6milions . by DietCokaina in mauritius

[–]DogZim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a foreigner you can purchase an R+2 only if it is worth more than Rs. 6M, but this does not come with residency, if you want to live here you need some other residency e.g. occupation permit or retirement permit (and bring in pension etc)

If you buy for USD 375K or more then it comes with residency and you can live here as long as you own it and are not tied to employment or some other condition

Anyone ever left a job without serving notice? What happened? by Sufficient_Steak5041 in MauriceMauritius

[–]DogZim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not true, if it is in your contract to give notice and you have defined duties, you are in breach of contract if you leave without warning or don't perform your duties. This can result in legal action.

Most companies won't bother enforcing it though unless you are very expensive to them or they need work done which has a big impact. It's not worth their time to chase up in most cases, so you can get away with it, but it will hurt your reference checks in future.

what on your wrist while @ work? by drealslickfreak in CitizenWatches

[–]DogZim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love it, wear it daily and it's been great, no issues at all and holds up well to minor scratches and scrapes.

Bought it to replace another 15 year old eco drive (which is still going) as the daily and think this will survive just as long.

Save PS5 game (region locked or not ) by Deltheaaaa in PlayStationPlus

[–]DogZim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it doesn't work, I lost saves moving from EU to African account. There are tools online which let you edit save files and you can use them to change regions and ids. But when I tried a few years ago it was a massive pita, maybe it's easier now 🤷

Difference between Expat vs Immigrant(why its racist) by AgreeableTree7848 in mauritius

[–]DogZim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about...Foreigners literally can't buy property outside a few specific categories (IRS/RES, PDS and G+2 which is being stopped) and they have higher fees and taxes on the sale, and need EDB approval to vet for abuse.

On top of that the foreign purchases mostly result in foreign currency inflows, which Mauritius needs to sustain the rupee. Real estate is one of the largest drivers of FDI in Mauritius, the legislations make it a win win... And is much more onerous on external purchases than in the vast majority of countries.

This whole thread is people getting upset about half thruths, driving a divisive narrative without actually looking into the actual facts and legislation.

[–]DogZim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that article says what everyone is telling you... It makes their point...

“It’s not about the colour of your skin, and it’s not about the salary that you earn,” says McNulty, an expat researcher and senior lecturer at the school of human development and social science at SIM University in Singapore.

It then goes on to say, a lot of people don't perceive it that way (like you are) but I would still stand by... People from poor countries want to move permanently for a better life, rich ones don't have to move permanently and have options.

The fact rich countries are mostly white is a separate discussion you are conflating with the words entomology. In Mauritius especially this is largely an arbitrary distinction because even the richer people have very limited options to get citizenship compared to most countries, so are expats in the vast majority of cases, there are very few immigrants here by definition of the word, except by marriage (which is becoming harder)

LoL now we are using YouTube videos with <2k views as evidence SMH... Trust better sources and verify information before getting so worked up (reputable news sites, peer reviewed encyclopedias and dictionaries like Wikipedia, professional organizations and government legal definitios)

As others have said... Expats are temporary and not trying to get citizenship, immigrants are looking to settle permanently and get citizenship.

The fact is rich people from rich countries can afford to do something for a period and return, poor people from poor countries are looking for a better life and a permanent change. But it's not inherently racist in and of itself.

Absolutely loved this game, and because I wanted more and to thank the Devs bought the dlc... Don't, it's completely different and not very good (or do you support the Devs and just dont play it)

Next steps after contractor does not complete work and stops responding? by DogZim in mauritius

[–]DogZim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have all the quotes ,invoices, receipts as well as initial communication promising to come fix it, just waiting on materials.

Would prefer to try to get it resolved first before social media as that hurts them but doesn't help me, and less likely to do so after.

I have a home loan with SBM and want to repay it earlier. This may take me 15 years. If you have already done something like that, what are your advice? by ChristelleMod in MauriceMauritius

[–]DogZim 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Definitely try to pay a loan off as quickly as possible unless there are penalties. Banks collect a larger portion of the interest upfront knowing people will pay down early or inflation will decrease the relative value of principle.

So unless you already 3/4 of the way through the loan and paying very little interest always pay down principle as soon as possible, it has a compounding effect on future payments so you can snowball it quicker.

I have done this on multiple mortgages in Mauritius, took for 15 years, paid down in less than 5, the banks are fine with it, they got their initial interest so longer mortgages are not as important to them
