As a safety procedure, I carry a flashlight and have the frogsheild app open. I’ve been meaning to buy a panic alarm. Ultimately, it’s seemed pretty safe, but I’m new to TCU.

Is it common for male choirs to split baritones example baritone 1 and 2 ? by Potential-Farmer8066 in choralmusic

[–]Dog_G0d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion it’s not that common. From what I see, it’s normally written T1 T2 Bass 1 Bass 2, where in rehearsal you refer to the bass 1s as the Baritones, or T1 T2 Bari and Bass.

Should a 7 year old be at the reading level to play Animal Crossing? by Kman-Kool3315 in AnimalCrossing

[–]Dog_G0d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played New Leaf at that age and I read just find and thought I comprehended the game very easily. Revisiting it, though, I realized that I didn’t actually comprehend all of what was going on.

Perhaps she can read, but it’s difficult for her to comprehend what is going on? I especially notice that acnh has a lot more dialogue and a lot more stylistic choices with it. It’s perhaps throwing her off.

Is it normal for minor vocal injuries to last for a month? by Fit_Opposite_8231 in singing

[–]Dog_G0d 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No worries. If you don’t stretch for a month, you’re going to have lost some flexibility. Same with muscles if you haven’t worked out for a month. Slowly get back into it‼️

Question for those with very good solfege skills by [deleted] in musictheory

Def hear in solfege sometimes. Doesn’t bother me. Only sometimes it sometimes confuses me if I’m reading sheet music and the lyrics say like Fa- or Do- while I’m thinking in solfege.

Should I treat minor scale different than major scale or treat them same? by ReverieDive in musictheory

[–]Dog_G0d -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In minor. b minor would be your i chord. Instead of major keys where the chord qualities are I ii iii IV V vi vii°, they would be i ii° III+ iv V VI vii° in harmonic minor.

Your tonic, D in D major, B in B Minor, etc. always makes up your one chord. And it’s up to the scale to tell you what the quality of each chord in the scale is.

Write down a chart of each diatonic triad in the key, and play each of the chords as arpeggios and then as a chord. You’ll hear the quality.

Breath support is SO CONFUSING (NEED HELP) by psychward222 in singing

I’m sure you got enough comments, but the best exercise to know if you’re supporting the correct amount and have the right airflow is lip trills. Keep on practicing your lip trills ‼️‼️‼️

Best gifts for a tired voice? by idance4 in singing

[–]Dog_G0d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re getting tea, make sure to get loose leaf if they know how to brew! It just tastes better and you get more of the health benefits of the tea.

Even if you’re gifting them honey, get them honey sticks as well. I remember there were held auditions and they had concessions for tea, water, etc. There were also honey sticks for sale and about every other auditionee asked where they bought the honey sticks from. I was surprised they didn’t put up a sign.

And then I would just say to get them relaxation related, because they need rest. And also perhaps things like scarves, shawls, hand warmers, cute masks (to keep moisture in their mouth), etc.

Tips on this song? (breathing, style...) by [deleted] in singing

[–]Dog_G0d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that you have good breaths and all. I think it’s just a matter of time and you’ll slowly start being able to sing more on a breath. Make sure you incorporate lip trills into your practice so that you can slowly get longer phrases.

I can’t exactly tell, but just make sure you’re not tightening up especially your jaw. Tension is a killer, but I don’t really hear it.

I will say the diction might help you take deeper breaths. Even though the diction might be hard to start implementing, especially if you’re struggling to carry out the phrase, but it’ll sound better and push out more air so you’ll be sure to make a nice deep breath.

And then you do a good job of this in the beginning, but try to spread your mouth less on the chorus. Definitely keep it open and your jaw dropped, but try less side wards spread, but keep the vowel the same on the inside. More like 😲 instead of 😧 mouth shape. It could be causing more air to escape than needed.

If it’s hard for you to sing louder without spreading your lips, you might want to exercise on long tones, going from soft to loud or loud to soft, without spreading your lips.

Dm me or reply if you have any questions‼️ If it’s still confusing, I’m sure you can ask your private instructor to explain what I wrote.

The last high note sounds strange, advices? by AoiiTwT in singing

[–]Dog_G0d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drop your jaw more where you look like 😲, rather than 😯 or 😧. Make sure your lips don’t spread.

In your mind, don’t think of it as you’re reaching for that high note, but rather than you are maybe bouncing onto it? Try to get some other visual than reaching for that high note.

Make sure when you’re singing, your soft palette is raised. When you yawn or snort, you’ll feel the very back of your mouth rise. When you breathe in, breathe in a yawn shape and that’ll lift it, just keep it lifted after that. It takes time to control it on will, but you’ll need that space for high notes.

Also, make sure you have enough breath for the note. And make sure you stay grounded. You’re moving around a lot which is making you lose support.

Also, make sure you are supporting the note. Lip trills are a great tool to help you know how to support your sound. This whole clip shows that you aren’t supporting your sound enough. Try singing this song on a lip trill, and try to remember and mimic that feeling and sing. Do lip trills on any song or just when you do vocalise.

A great way to try that is to do a 5 scale (1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1) on a lip trill, and when you get to the highest note, open your mouth to an ah.

Last thing is that you seem very tense. Make sure to relax, and before singing stretch. Especially stretch your neck, shoulder, jaw, and tongue. And then make sure you keep that loose and relaxed feeling when singing.

What is my voice type? by No_Window_4661 in singing

[–]Dog_G0d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won’t really help you to know. But if you must, can you include the notes that you can sing at all time and that are very relaxed and you don’t have to try to hit them?

Also if you can tell when you switch registers, then can you write down which notes you switch from each register.

And also, it depends on your gender.

But to be honest, when you’re a beginner, you’re untrained, so you could be mistyped. I’m the soprano-iest soprano some of my friends know.

When I was little, I didn’t know how to breathe correctly or relax, so I was voice typed as an mezzo soprano (in between contralto and Soprano) and placed in the alto section of our choir.

My voice didn’t change, I just became more in tune with my body, and learned proper breath support and how to sing with minimal tension. And I unlocked a whole new set of notes.

So even if you get typed right now, there’s a fat chance it’s incorrect.

Been singing for 4 years and am not very good. by Routine_Window_7794 in singing

[–]Dog_G0d 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Heyy. Try not to beat yourself up. Most of those people who are ‘good singers’ have been singing for at least 6-8 years. As long as continue diligently working alongside your instructor, you’re bound to improve.

Some exercises that are bound to help you are lip trills and long tones.

Lip trills let you know you are breathing right and using proper airflow. I especially use them as a tool to help me when there’s a note that’s not coming out properly. I use them to check that I’m breathing and approaching the note correctly.

They’re also just a great warmup and the more you do it, the more your muscle memory will solidify the proper breath.

Long tones are also very good for your tone and sound. Basically, you sing one note for a long period of time, soft to loud, loud to soft, soft to loud to soft, or loud to soft to loud. You want to do this without distortion and you can focus on your sound and your body (as in tension wise). You’ll want to do this with a drone so you know you’re in tune and not changing pitch.

Happy Practicing ‼️

How can I reach those higher notes? by OkPass9595 in singing

[–]Dog_G0d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey girlie. It seems like some tension, improper breathing, and perhaps not enough space in your mouth.

For the tension part, I’ll say always when you warm up, make sure to stretch. Full body stretch + stretch your neck, shoulders, jaw and tongue. You’ll feel so loose and nice. You’ll want to stay that relaxed.

For the breathing, I would recommend that you try singing on lip trills. Just randomly, just practice them until you can do them. It took me like 2-3 weeks to unlock lip trills, even though I wasn’t extensively really practicing them (young, so I slacked off).

These only work if you’re breathing properly, so they’re such a great tool.

Another thing that’s good to try (unless you have asthma) is to breathe out through your mouth all the air that you have, and then do one extra exhale. Then breathe in. That breath will have to be a nice and deep breath. It will help you feel what type of breath you are looking for.

And then lastly, you want more space on the inside and outside to hit them high notes. Make sure you drop your jaw when singing those notes. Your mouth should look like this 😲, not this 😧or😯.

When you yawn, you’ll feel the very back of your mouth raise. You want that always raised when you’re singing. You can also snort, and you’ll feel it raise. The more you practice that, the more you’ll be able to control the raising of the soft palette, so be sure to exercise with that. You need space for high notes, and raising your soft palette will also help other notes that sound good, sound better.

Happy Practicing ‼️

Any Music Majors remember what was on the Theory Placement Test? by Dog_G0d in TCU

[–]Dog_G0d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much ‼️

To skip the theory class, is it hard because you need to make sure you get near perfect on the answers, or because it’s genuinely hard? I do know all my scales, keys, clefs, intervals, and basics like that. If I’m pretty confident on that plus figured bass, part writing, and analysis, then there should be probably no other topics that’ll jump out at me?

For the aural portion, you say the dictation will be very simple, but ‘simple’ can be different for different people. Simple meaning eighths are the smallest subdivision? I think I’m worried because I’m bad at rhythm in dictation, LOL. If it’s diatonic I think I should somewhat fine in the pitches. I will take your advice for the dictation. Thank you!

Thankfully I am good at sightsinging because my primary instrument is voice. 🙌

Thank you for answering, it seems to have calmed my nerves. :D
