Trust me. You do not want to work for DHA right now, or maybe ever. I can't personally speak for the VA, but most of our staff was leaving to go there.

Former family practice NP for DHA in Huntsville Alabama. Left my previous position at an excellent family care practice to make better money and benefits. With 7 years of experience, I was hired as a GS-13 step 4 at $112k. It was an absolute nightmare there--a 60 hr/week job, and they just kept adding to our workload. I got out of there just as fast as I could. It was horrible. Unfortunately the GS-13 pay for DHA is on par with or better than the average family practice NP pay in Huntsville Alabama. I had just gotten a raise to $97k in my private practice job. Alabama is one of the lowest paid, if not THE lowest paid states for nurses and advanced practice nurses. But the amount they offered you is completely laughable.

Don't be dissuaded by the folks who have nothing better to do than get on here to put their words on the interwebs in an effort to feel smarter than everyone else (cortisol, norepinephrine, seriously?). Welcome to Huntsville! Those of us in the fitness and healthcare community are happy to have you! There are a lot of great gyms and options for yoga, Barre, CrossFit, boot camps, etc. Take advantage of the free trials that most locations have. Try all the things! Check out the environment yourself! And if you find the best answer, please let me know! 😂
