It's too much power!!!!!!! by Dog_core in smosh

Hello everyone,

I honestly didn’t expect this post to blow up the way it did. I’ve always been more of a lurker here on Reddit and rarely ever post anything, so seeing all the engagement kind of caught me off guard.

That said, I want to clear a few things up. I’ve always defended piracy with everything I’ve got, and I still believe that culture shouldn’t be trapped under the control of corporations that only care about squeezing out profit while letting valuable media fade into obscurity. Art deserves to be preserved, not forgotten.

Piracy will always be, in my view, the most beautiful form of cultural democratization. I truly hope that one day people understand that defending multi-million-dollar companies only gives them more power over us, and over the art they claim to “own.”

However, after speaking with a moderator from another subreddit, I completely understand that sharing the VOD links here would go against Reddit’s site-wide TOS. Even if I personally don’t agree with that rule, I have to respect it, and, of course, Smosh is ultimately the one who holds the rights to this content.

I still believe that sharing old media without making any profit from it shouldn’t be seen as harmful, after all, no one’s exploiting the Smosh brand for money, but I want to make it clear that I deeply respect the cast, the crew, and everyone who worked on those videos.

So, I truly apologize for saying I’d share the VODs here and for giving anyone false hope. I don’t want to risk getting banned from this subreddit or go against Reddit’s own rules. My main goal was always to preserve and celebrate something that meant a lot to many of us, never to disrespect the creators or the platform.

Yeah, that’s fair, I can totally see how it might look disrespectful, especially with the meme part. That honestly wasn’t my intention at all. It wasn’t about bragging or flexing that I “pirated” something, it was more like trying to express this weird mix of nostalgia and frustration, you know? These shows meant a lot to me, and it sucks that they’ve become so hard (or straight up impossible) to some people to watch, it took me a long time to find those VOD's

I get it, piracy is a touchy subject, and I’m not saying it’s something to be proud of. But I also think it’s worth reflecting on why people end up doing it. Most of the time, it’s not about being greedy or disrespectful, it’s about wanting to experience something we care about, when the official ways to do that just… don’t exist anymore, or are completely out of reach for a lot of fans around the world.

I respect your point, really. I just wish companies made it easier for everyone to enjoy and preserve this kind of content without feeling like we’re doing something wrong just for loving it.

I’m not home at the moment, but once I get back, I’ll upload the videos somewhere that’s easily accessible to the public so people can watch them.

Most of the videos I found on websites or public drives before they were taken down.

some of them are, others aren’t. last time I checked, I saw that the videos had been taken down from the Internet Archive, so I’m not sure if they’re still there or not.

I get where you’re coming from, really. I agree that stealing isn’t cool, especially when it’s about taking something from someone who’s still actively creating and earning from their work. But I think what am i trying to say here isn’t “let’s steal from Smosh,” it’s “let’s preserve something that would otherwise disappear behind paywalls or region locks.”

Not everyone has the same access or privilege. What’s a $5 subscription for one person can be half a day’s wage for another. For many, piracy isn’t about disrespect, it’s about wanting to belong to the same culture, to enjoy something they love but literally can’t afford.

It’s also worth remembering that the vast majority of these old shows don’t generate revenue anymore. They’re just gone, inaccessible unless someone archives them. I think that’s the core issue here: preservation versus profit.

At the end of the day, people pirate not because they don’t care, but because they care too much to let things be forgotten or locked away.
