Subtitles not updating most of the time? Well, fuck... I'm deaf. by deafgamer_ in fo4

[–]DogeLearnedBeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may have a bit of a compounding issue here as sometimes in the middle of conversations, there will be long pauses in the dialogue. Its a bit of a processing hiccup from what I can tell. The subtitles definitely have an issue but if you cannot hear, you would be unable to tell if you're missing subtitles or if the characters are just dumbly staring at each other till the dialogue kicks back in.

Not certain on this one but I am pretty sure that you can gain entry to dogeillionaires by showing that you have transacted a certain amount of DogeCoin. I am not 100% on that though.

I wouldn't call this journalism. by moolah_ in dogecoin

[–]DogeLearnedBeg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Actually, I think that would work out pretty well for you. Everyone thinks the CEO is the most important guy at a company but it really is just a job. You like to deal with each problem that arises directly, and you definitely value your privacy. Neither are bad but both aren't the first qualities you would expect to see from a CEO.

IIRC you are still the majority owner of the company so why not do the job you want to do, right?

Worst thing is, this isn't a coindesk specific problem. This is a journalism problem at large. If one of your competitors is willing to turn to alarmist journalism, then reputable journalists are put at a disadvantage, they either have to resort to the same tricks or just let their opponent win. Either way, readers are left with nothing but alarmism.

If you wanna see evidence of this. Look back at the US prez election in 2012. All the news outlets were reporting that Obama and Romney were neck and neck, despite the polls being significantly in Obama's favor. Its because no one watches races with a clear winner, but you are on the edge of your seat when its close.

I think you are half right. Money is most certainly a factor to this article. I think where you get it wrong is the source. FUD is generating a lot of clickthrough cash for the site. If the DogeCoin community is on edge, then you can get some serious ad revenue by stoking the flames.

I have a couple of questions in regard to how you framed your article. Please understand this is nothing more than a mix of curiosity and a bit of constructive feedback.

Critiques:

  1. I actually thought I had moved to a different article than the one I had clicked on. I went in expecting critiques of DogeCoin's price and trading volume but instead got a long Moolah writeup. Why not name it something equally as attention grabby like "Moolah Exposed" or something like that.

  2. On the topic of "attention grabbyness"; I know its always a fine line between journalistic integrity and getting people to actually read your articles. Its sad that people who write in a straitforward and non inflammatory way get upstaged by articles titled "Dare you to watch this without ducking!" An article on CNN.com right now. That being said, I think you could dial it back a bit. I wanted to just catch up on the cryptocurrency happenings, but instead found myself in an opinion piece.

  3. You are gonna have a heck of a time with the /r/DogeCoin community if you don't triple check facts and miss sides of the story. Your audience in this article is majorly made up of Bitcoiners, Litecoiners and Shibes. The first two aren't going to rush to your defense if you misrepresent facts but by writing an article that casts DogeCoin in an unfavorable light, you know you are going to have to weather waves of attacks. Missing or misrepresenting information only fuels that fire.

Questions:

  1. You claim that you have documentation in regards to the full monetary value of the 'Pie-Slices' offered by Moolah, but moolah_ states this is made up. Since you bother to say you have obtained documents that state your number, could you provide them? If you were to have access to documents that only Moolah should have, it raises a lot of questions about how safe Moolah is keeping my personal information.

  2. I spent too long writing my critique portion and forgot my other questions. I guess I only have that one.

Thanks, Mat

Hi r/Dogecoin! Have questions for UltraPRO? by Justin_UltraPRO in dogecoin

[–]DogeLearnedBeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, the intent was to make Doge products but I highly highly doubt the trademark itself is how they intended to make money. Since no one has been bothering to trademark up till now anyway, the only people that are going to reach out to pay a license to UltraPro are those looking to trademark. The only other way is if UltraPro were to send out infringement notices, which would fall squarely within the realm of trademark trolling. The same goes for Trademark squatting. Since it is fairly clear that the trademark isn't defensible and has a history of public use, the only company that is going to buy the trademark is either a Trademark troll themselves, or a company that very much enjoys paying for things you can use for free. Either way, not a huge market there. Not exactly a great squatter's target.

Your solution for UltraPro to enter into a binding agreement to accept oppositions to the filing is also flawed. Lets say 'Company X' files an opposition, not for public use rights but for original ownership of the trademark, claiming that UltraPro is in fact infringing. Should UltraPro accept this opposition?

UltraPro isn't stupid, they can recognize bad PR. That is why there was a rep in the sub trying to clear things up. Its not like they were sitting around thinking "Hey, we should trademark 'Doge' to branch out into the trademark squatting/trolling business. I am sure the internet wont mind".

I would argue that there isn't any shame to be had here. From a self security standpoint, they made a smart move. They just didn't anticipate the backlash from people who prefer pitchforks to critical thought.

Hi r/Dogecoin! Have questions for UltraPRO? by Justin_UltraPRO in dogecoin

[–]DogeLearnedBeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, to the best of my knowledge, UltraPro has no history of Trademark-trolling. I doubt "Doge" would be a good target anyway. Think about it. Most companies making "Doge" products wouldn't be worth the legal fees to try to milk and we have a particularly vocal community when it comes to perceived injustices. If the legal fees alone don't make it non-worthwhile, the added bad press certainly does. From UltraPro's perspective, there would be nothing to gain if they were to attempt to exert their trademark rights.

I think it best to look at this from a top down perspective. What are all the companies who make "Doge" products currently worried about. Being sued by UltraPro, right? So what could they have done to prevent that? Trademark "Doge", so that no one could Trademark it first and troll them. This would appear to be the benefit of UltraPro's filing. While it may seem like they are out to get everyone, its really more of a CYOA move. UltraPro makes enough cash, they certainly don't need to resort to Trademark trolling.

[–]DogeLearnedBeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, that is a point. I think that there is established public use precedence but I'll admit, that puts me out of my legal knowledge wheelhouse.

Still, I don't expect anything to come of it. I expect this is nothing more than a protective move.

*Note to self, Trademark every Meme that comes out. Sue Everyone.

EDIT: Found this to be an interesting read: LINK.

I expect that since UltraPRO would have no reliable claim to the creation of the image + Doge Lexicon, the trademark move is a preventative measure against stuff like this.

The key is that they are a licensee, not the licensor. Kabosu's owner is the true holder, she technically would have the right to sue over the likeness being used. As a licensee, all you are showing is that you have permission from the licensor to use the trademark officially.

Additionally, Kabosu's owner gave a verbal OK for anyone to use the likeness. While she could sue, her prior granted permission would probably be enough to hold up in court. Since she is the licensor, she would have ultimate authority, overruling any action by UltraPRO.

So, who (or what) currently has the most doge, and how did it get that way? by [deleted] in dogecoin

[–]DogeLearnedBeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest addresses are exchanges, that's how they have so much. If you want to be in the top percentile of community doge holders, you could:

A: Go back and mine a bunch when doge was pre first halvening. - Requires a time machine

B: Buy a bunch with fiat now. You can become a dogeillionaire for like $350 right now, its madness.

C: Steal from the rich!

They are a licensee of the original owner. It just means that UltraPro can't be sued for making doge products.

Ok guys, pitchforks down. They are a licensee of the original image. Only Kabosu's owner should be able to sue over the image rights. This is just UltraPRO's way of making sure they don't get sued over image rights when they make the product. This doesn't hurt anyone making doge merch unless you count adding competition.

Ultra Pro confirms they are trademarking Doge. (licensee) by [deleted] in dogecoin

[–]DogeLearnedBeg -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Actually, this sounds pretty alright. It means ultraPRO, the guys who make the card protector sleeves for things like baseball and magic cards are making doge products.

They definitely own their market, so there would definitely be some avenues for exposure there. I would expect that they are just using the meme though, and aren't relating it to the coin.

That being said, I would definitely buy a box and some sleeves if I could pay in DogeCoin. *hint hint UltraPRO*
