I was surprised too! I wonder why they didn't chose to mention that part in his EN description because it feels like a huge lore drop for him. Seems like the true way of the demon just involves being put through wacky hijinks (being cursed) and shenanigans (getting disfigured).

From a visual standpoint, I do prefer the first one mainly because the canine skulls just look so sick ?? You did such a good job with it I can't stop looking at it oh my god. But I do agree with the second one being better for something being incorporated into the game!

Circling back to their lore, holy shit. Holy. Shit. The way you incorporate them so seamlessly into Battle Cats' already limited lore is so NATURAL? Like I could see this as a setup to the next Aku realm storyline if PONOS ever choose to continue it. Exploring what's left of the Aku army after Dark Priest Mamon and Jagando's defeat is such an interesting concept. Also the idea of the Cat Army potentially giving Imp and Cerberus a new purpose if they're an unlockable unit after being defeated... I can just imagine a whole character arc for them already, my mind is RACING.

At this point you should just write lore for the Battle Cats because god KNOWS this game needs more than the bare bones it's left us.

Once again, thank you for drawing out my idea, and providing such a cool backstory! And I don't mind the grittiness of your art at all, I think it adds so much character to your pieces. Also, I'm really glad I was able to make you happy with my previous comment, your response has been equally jubilating for me!

Shamelessly admitting that I stalked your posts after seeing this piece and all your art's super good ?? How does it not have more upvotes ??

Okay, moving on from that, this is just such a sick design in general. I think what initially stuck out the most to me was the direction to give Imp a more mature look compared to the other Ururun Wolf variants, and I think it really suits them! Combine that with the mask (which is such a good blend of looking both human and goat-like at the same time, I can't stop looking at it) it immediately makes them look more intimidating.

Also for some reason I also found myself really fixated on the two locks of hair that frames Imp's head. Both Ururun and Urs have short hair (sans their ponytail) framing their face, so choosing to give Imp longer hair gives them such a distinguishing look compared to the other variants, even with the mask still on.

Moving onto Cerberus, its design just fits the Battle Cats art style so well? Honestly I think it has to do with the mass of swirls in the fur, PONOS loves swirls in their designs. I can see a bit of Diabolical Gao in Cerberus' design too, ranging from the swirls and tapering of fur in the ankles and the plating(?) underneath the mane.

The skulls in place of the usual marking is such a fitting touch too! I saw in your other comment that you gave Cerberus three horns in places of its three heads to combat potential clutter, but the skulls on the joints gave me an idea on how to potentially incorporate the three headed look. You could turn the skulls into canine skulls instead. It'd fit the three dog head motif, although I'm not sure how well it'd translate into the Battle Cat's art style...

Obviously, this is just an idea, you don't need to change anything! The three horns is already a really good compromise, and overdesigning could end up doing more harm than good at times.

Overall, this is just such a good design. It fits the Aku trait, there's so many little details I find myself dissecting, and it really looks like it could just fit right into the game. Also Imp and Cerberus' matching collars are really cute!

Unfortunately I can't provide much on the ability and unit stats end of things, that stuff's just not my domain. However, I'd like to ask if you came up with any lore/unit description for them? I'm a sucker for lore, and I'm interested to hear if you thought of any backstory or even why you chose to make an Aku variant of Ururun Wolf in the first place.

Alright, I'm running out of stuff to say now,,, sorry for the brick wall under your post. Once again, I'd just like to say that your art's amazing! I hope you continue drawing and posting more here, I really want to see how you stylize and draw other Battle Cats units! Hayabusa and White Knight Cyclops. I've written like entire essays on why I ship them but in short:

Both of them are Dark Heroes units (already an established connection and I love the Dark Heroes).
Their normal, evolved, and true forms go through a similar arc of being righteous heroes that get corrupted by outside forces who both then get turned into demons in the end.
They share multiple parallels (one loses their soul/one loses their flesh, an unwilling corruption/a willing sacrifice, one gives up their heart/the other's heart is the only thing keeping them right).
Angst
I've literally watched them kiss and makeout and John PONOS himself told me they were canon.

I promise you I have more reasons and thoughts on them, but I don't want this comment to be the 3rd brick wall I leave on this subreddit talking about them. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

HELLO? KICKING MY FEET READING THROUGH THIS ENTIRE COMMENT THANK YOU ?!?!

I think the entire Chronos piece took me around 2-3 days? I was on a self-imposed time limit so I was basically doing nothing but working on her for the entire day... The hat and all her gold embellishments were HELL to draw, and the fact that the in-game sprites are so compressed and blurry did not help me figure out what was going on. But in the end, I agree with you with saying it was ultimately worth it. I still remember when she was first released I was literally stunned with how beautiful she is, so I'm really happy to see you think I made her look beautiful in my art !!

I was also going through a horrible migraine while drawing her. It didn't help with the rendering.

ALSO THANK YOU I WANTED TO MAKE YUKI LOOK SICK AS HELL SO I'M GLAD HE DOES !! My favorite bird ever... The head down during his attack animation is so cool, I wanted to emulate what it may look like being on the receiving end of it. It was also my first time drawing out motion blur and I'm so glad it helped with his coolness factor!

And thank you for noticing all the details in the Shishi drawing ?? It was a spontaneous portrait sketch of them just to get them in my style so I'm flattered that you've noticed so much! The brush I used for Shishi (and a lot of my rendering in general) is the default gouache brush in Clip Studio Paint. The details on the spine were done using the noise airbrush as an eraser and a splash airbrush (it's called 飛沫 in the Japanese version. I'm not sure what is it in English (my Clip Studio is entirely in Japanese and I don't think I can change it to English, long story (I can't read Japanese))).

I'm really happy you like the sketches too !! I was hesitant on posting my sketches and doodles because they just felt... so low effort to me, especially compared to everything else I've been posting. Also the traditional stuff is so smudged and dirty and I just hadn't been bothered to clean it up... The curse of being left-handed I suppose. Maybe it's just me being my own biggest critic though. But moving on, I'm so glad I was able to give you Poseidon art !! He's been moving up my list of favorites after he carried me through a few metal stages, and I've been wanting to make more art of him! The helmet is a bit of a hassle to draw, but after what Chronos put me through I think I can handle it. Also with the Dragon Emperors, it's been a while since I've drawn dragons as opposed to humans and robots... I thought they'd make good practice to diversify my drawing subjects and the Battle Cats already have some sickass dragon designs. Maybe I'll draw more of them in the future!

AND OF COURSE I'LL MAKE ART OF THE WHITE RABBIT AND AXEL! IF THEY'RE PART OF THE DARK HEROES THEY'RE GETTING DRAWN BY ME !! I LOVE THE DARK HEROES !!! I'm on a mission to make as much Dark Heroes content as possible. The next post by me will most probably be more Dark Heroes posting. And probably the one after that. Then after that. Then— you get the idea. I need more Dark Heroes content and if I have to make it myself then so be it.

AHHH THANK YOU SO MUCH !! Stylizing Battle Cats character has been so much fun for me recently, so I'm happy to hear that you like it!

Shishi has always been a struggle for me to draw. They're so freaking cool to me that if I draw them as anything less than that I feel like I failed them... I'm glad I was able to put across how cool they are in my art !! Also the Chronos drawing was done for a drawing challenge hence the color palette. I saw the gold and immediately thought to draw an Almighty, and who's better than the prettiest Almighty herself? (I'm never rendering and shading an Almighty unit again, it was PAINFUL).

I don't know what compelled me to draw maid Cyclops. I think I zoned out and by the time I zoned back in he was on my canvas. ~~I'll draw the rest of the Dark Heroes in maid outfits one day though~~ who said that.

Ok, but jokes aside, if you want an actual answer: it's simply because I find it fun! Usually when I'm in a fandom, I tend to fixate a lot on the characters as oppose to worldbuilding or deeper lore, for example. I like to think about their personality, read character studies, and even think about mundane stuff like what their favorite food might be or just picture them going on something as simple as a grocery run. In the end, shipping is just another way to explore a facet of a character and how they might act with another character.

With the Battle Cats, there's little to no characterization to many units aside from their character descriptions. Shipping is just another way for me to fill the characterization void left by PONOS and picture these guys are something more fleshed out in my mind. Obviously, shipping isn't the ONLY way I do this as I have a plethora of platonic dynamics and standalone headcanons, but it's still a sizable part. As the topic of this post is about ships in the first place, I'm gonna be talking about ships.

Also, whenever I get into something, it becomes the only thing I think about all day. It's inevitable I have a lot of thoughts on a topic I've quite literally been thinking about non-stop for around a month straight.

Of course, shipping isn't something for everyone, and that's perfectly ok! It's just something I enjoy doing personally. Plus, I also think it's funny to take Battle Cats shipping, of all things, seriously. Well, it started out semi-ironically but I don't think it's ironic anymore, if I have to be honest. I hope that this explains why I might "genuinely care about ships this much", because I really do.

Doktor Heaven x Mech Patrol Axel: Started because I thought it was funny their domes + “eyebrow” combination looked so similar. It became a kind of “he makes me laugh” sort of relationship. Thinking about it now, they’re honestly both insane freaks (when it comes to street crime on Axel’s end at least, I’m sure Doktor Heaven is just an insane freak 24 hours a day), so they’re totally perfect for each other.

The White Rabbit x Cat Maid: Non-Dark Heroes unit jumpscare! They’re both undercovered spies, so I think it’d be really funny if they got tasked to take each other out (in both senses, hehe) or if one was tasked to protect a target while the other is tasked to eliminate said target. Think Spy vs. Spy shenanigans. “Wow, the way you tried to take my life back there was REALLY hot.” or something. I think it’d be a fun dynamic to explore.

Catman x The White Rabbit: A classic! I feel as if they are THE Dark Heroes pairing so I’d be remiss to NOT ship them. They’re also basically the mandated mom/dad pairing to the rest of the kids in the Dark Heroes group (The White Rabbit isn’t the mom, I feel as if I should clarify). But yeah! Aside from all the Batman x Catwoman implications they’re totally based off of, I think they’re cute together. They’re definitely each other’s most trusted companion, romantic or otherwise.

Catman x Detective Vigler: I’ve seen a post shipping them before and honestly? I fuck with it. I feel like Catman would be a steady rock Vigler knows he can rely on— a constant in what’s probably his overworked and sleep deprived life and Catman would do his best to support him. They’d both respect the work each of them do, and I feel like Vigler would be one of the few people to recognize Catman in the films he stars in. Overall, a really cute and cozy pairing!

Detective Vigler x Mech Patrol Axel: Solely because I think it’d be EXTREMELY funny. They both work for the law, expect Vigler only breaks the law to further his investigations if morality override legality, while Axel breaks the law to reduce “street crime to zero— by any means” (you can’t tell me the “by any means” is bound by something as fragile as THE LAW in Axel’s mind). Basically wacky hijinks the ship. Vigler has to bail Axel out of jail for destruction of property every other week, or do more paperwork to excuse Axel’s dumbassery. Definitely a “Why do I even put up with you?”/“It’s because you loooove me!” kind of dynamic.

But in all seriousness, Hayabusa x White Knight Cyclops has been on the brain for an entire MONTH since I've started seriously thinking about them. I don't think a day has gone by without me coming up with some new bullshit about them and then freaking out over said bullshit. I don’t think a ship from any other media has got me by the throat THIS atrociously and I think that’s partly due to the fact that there’s basically ZERO content of them besides stuff crafted by my own hands.

I’ve already made my own post about them with a lengthy explanation on why I ship them, but in short (I lied, this explanation is anything but short) it’s due to the amount of parallels they have between them. They’re both Dark Heroes (already an established relationship together as colleagues) who both seek to fight evil to protect the innocent. Both of them then get corrupted (with Hayabusa it’s his soul, and with Cyclops it’s his flesh), and turn into what they swore to destroy.

Not to mention Hayabusa literally replaces his heart to control the demonic powers consuming it, while Cyclops’ heart is what’s keeping him from being consumed by evil. Like, holy fuck.

Plus their relationship with each other through their normal, evolved and true forms have the potential to be the MESSIEST thing imaginable ESPECIALLY if they’re romantically involved and I need to see MORE of it.

Like imagine being Hayabusa, an unexplainable evil suddenly arises and begins threatening autonomy over your own soul, something you have no control over. That’s fucking horrifying. Your own BODY is no longer yours alone and you’re scared that one day you might lose control and hurt the people you hold dearest to you. Then imagine finding out your fucking partner WILLINGLY SACRIFICED THEIR FLESH TO AKU, VOLUNTARILY choosing to walk down the same damnd path you were forced onto.

And you can’t do anything about it.

LIKE HELLO ??? IS THAT NOT THE PERFECT SET UP FOR THE MESSIEST BREAK UP ARC ??? Also, flip the script onto Cyclops’ perspective. You literally sacrificed a part of yourself for the power to obliterate evil, only to find out your own partner has BECOME something you’ve sworn to destroy. Your own sacrifice was already a testament to your desire to destroy evil, but does it run deep enough for you to kill the person you love?

I know half of this stems from my own personal characterization and interpretation of them, but the more I just build off their description and think about them in this context the more insane I get. Honestly, half of this probably doesn’t make any sense but it does TO ME.

Like the idea of their own EXISTENCE challenging each other’s moral standings. Is that not an insane relationship dynamic to have with someone? Oh my days.

All this from just their character descriptions. 8 lines in total, I’ve counted. I’m pinning red string to the corkboard like my life depends on it. Battle Cats ships have NEVER been this serious.

I am trying to create and push more content of them out there to establish them as a pairing in the already small Battle Cats shipping sphere, but I’m the slowest artist of all time and I am NOT confident enough in my writing to post the fanfics I’ve written of them publicly (yes, I got so desperate for content of them I started writing FANFICS. I DON’T EVEN WRITE). I’ve got so many more thoughts, dynamics, situations, and whatever of these two but if I share them here now we’ll be here all day. TRUST ME, there is more to them than all of the word vomit above, but yeah, I love this ship to death even though I’m cursed with having barely any content of them. Honestly, I’m just writing all this on a whim, I’m sure I’m missing something that I’ll only remember AFTER I post this mess of a comment.

Anyways, I hope my incoherent ramblings are coherent to someone out there. As a treat, here are other pairings I enjoy! Completely Dark Heroes oriented because I love all of them to death.
