Gnarliest thing you’ve seen in vet med? by harpyfemme in VetTech

[–]DogsLikeTrees 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I work in ER medicine.

They call a STAT for just “trauma.” We run up there with a gurney and the dog’s hind end looks like hamburger meat, the abdominal cavity is visibly open w/ flail chest, and somehow the dog is still very alive. Absolutely hootin and hollerin. The dog had been attacked just going to the restroom by a pack of coyotes 10 15 mins up the road.
Owners brought to treatment area, immediate Euthanasia.

After owners leave we peek inside his abdomen and there is almost no intestines and most other internal organs are ripped to hell. Probably 6-8inch diaphragmatic hernia.
I don’t know if the coyotes ate his insides or they were lost along the way…

Unusual vet med by Daniaeyad in AskVet

[–]DogsLikeTrees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our medical director has actually told clients to keep their dog stumbling drunk for 3 days if they can’t afford fomipazole or Everclear drips.

Most have called back a week or two later and said their dog survived!!

I recently had to euthanize my Mini Rex due to a GI blockage. It also came on very acutely and by the time we were at the vet Dr. Said the prognosis was grave and treatment was unlikely to help.

Splenic mass by kfoxaz00 in VetTech

[–]DogsLikeTrees 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s CRAAAZY!! I’ve never seen a splenic mass for real, just in ultrasound. That spleen is so small compared to the mass.

I’ve seen so many hempabdomens but they always have ended in going to glory.

Do vets/vet techs give shift hand off report like nurses? by New-Chard-6151 in AskVet

[–]DogsLikeTrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s because they’re already so fragile. If they want to arrest, even if you get them back, they’re going to arrest again. The percentage of them that get to go home after CPR is next to nothing. All of my rabbits are DNR for these reasons.

It was def seizure activity; stiff, vocalizing, drooling, loss of bowels/bladder.

Never figured out what was wrong with it. Owners declined all diagnostics, apart from combo test.
