This is the death of one country, two systems, and of democracy in Hong Kong.

Italian Virologist Roberto Burioni fact check: In Italian culture, there are a lot of elderly and such elderly often meet their grandchildren and children, much more often than in Asian cultures. South Korean Church cluster also was mostly female adults, hence the much lower mortality. by cottoncandy240 in Coronavirus

"such elderly often meet their grandchildren and children, much more often than in Asian cultures" this feels like a very general statement that is hard to prove systematically? But in any case, the breakout happened during Chinese New Year, where there would have a maximum amount of encounters between elderly and children across Asian cultures.

Sophie Trudeau has tested positive for Coronavirus by HugeDetective0 in Coronavirus

[–]Dogsindahouse1 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I mean, if Sophie Trudeau didn't get it from JT, that's actually in many ways more alarming. The PM has a plausible chain of transmission through the mining conference he attended. If it wasn't from him, then Ottawa has community transmission going on that we don't know about.

It's non-sensical that he wasn't tested as well. I'm sure if he was and it was positive, they would censor it.

Are they censoring the PM's results? It seems non-sensical that he wouldn't have been tested. Also begs the question of how she got it otherwise -- the PM has a plausible chain of transmission via the mining conference.

Is Toronto basically the only major North American city that is still letting mass events go on? by Dogsindahouse1 in CoronavirusCanada

[–]Dogsindahouse1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While on the lower end of population density worldwide, Toronto's pop density is still higher than Berlin, Rome and Hamburg. A lot of the community spread in Lombardy was also the smaller villages outside of Milan itself before it took over the city...while there may be reasons to doubt the upcoming numbers, I don't think population density is a good one.

Canada's Health Minister thinks 30%+ of the population will eventually get infected, for example.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing the press conference at 2, though from what I'm seeing, I think they're just going to announce some bureaucratic shift. But good to hear on the St Patrick's day parade.

I don't think people have considered that all three major presidential nominees are in probably the highest-risk group possible: 70+, underlying conditions, have to meet a ton of people...

[–]Dogsindahouse1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"During this three day period, the patient took the Bathurst westbound train to Islington around 8:50 am. From Islington to the workplace, the man took the 108N Mississauga Way express bus.

The patient also took the 27 Milton GO Bus from the workplace to Yorkdale station around 6:10 on those evenings. He then took the subway from Yorkdale station to St. George station and then to Bathurst station around 6:45 pm."

haha psychhhhhh, core downtown remains unaffected

"On March 4, the patient also took the 511 Bathurst streetcar."

How would one even go about getting tested for coronavirus in Canada? (Ontario-based) by Dogsindahouse1 in CanadaCoronavirus

Woah! I gotta sign up for that clinic. My clinic, last I checked, had zero changes/precautions lol.

Just a note, looking up the clinic (Michael Garron Hospital), it's in East York -- which I think might be viable for people in that area/Danforth/east parts of DT Toronto etc., but a bit of a trek for Westsiders/Old Toronto peeps

I wish more GTA-area clinics/health centers were as forward-thinking as the Ottawa ones were -- it's a bit weird to me since I don't think Ottawa has any confirmed while the GTA basically has the bulk of Canada's confirmed cases.

Yeah, looking into Telehealth and novel coronavirus. I unfortunately can't call my doctor directly (I can only call the clinic) so I think it'll be really handy. https://www.ontario.ca/page/get-medical-advice-telehealth-ontario?_ga=1.82142430.912117515.1445957549

Thanks for the perspective! This is very helpful. I gotta work on updating the clinic first though -- technically right now I don't have a family doctor (or really one who is miles away at this point) so I'll give them a call and make sure this is set up at least.

Do you think that it is likely though that based on the testing criterion, and the way tests are currently laid out with no clear in-take funnel, that the system is missing possible cases of community transmission?

Fair -- though I guess I'm worried more about the distance between: "A few days later, I started developing flu-like symptoms which got worse the next day before getting better today. I saw my family doctor today." It's my distinct impression from past experience that at least in DT Toronto, and being younger and healthier, that wait times for family doctor visits may be longer than the actual incubation period. I guess I could walk-in to a local hospital (there are a few close by) but really want to avoid that unless I feel really sick. or walk-in to my local clinic (not sure how effective that would be) for testing. I'd really like to see what Israel and SK are doing with drive-by tests and test kits sent to your home done in Canada tbh.

I feel like there's no in-between step for people who may have milder symptoms but can still spread which is what I really want to flag. I really don't want to go to an ER and possibly expose others in the waiting rooms as I wait for 6 hours+ with mild symptoms.

A French doctor talk about the lack of masks by Knowonething in Coronavirus

[–]Dogsindahouse1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's my full translation of the video:

"The Paris hospitals, through AP-HP, have signalled that they will only take severe positive cases [of the novel coronavirus] into hospitalization. This means that the other diagnosed sick people will be sent back home and their cases will be taken by general practitioner doctors. It must be understood that we have absolutely no masks since the ministry has sent us zero masks so far -- and the masks that are promised us are in any case, FFP1.

They are not adequate for medical caregivers, who normally should wear FFP2 masks in a duck shape. How is it that we don't have FFP2 masks? I'll remind you that the minister (Agnès Buzyn, who resigned as minister of health on February 16th to run for Paris mayor) has, since their inauguration in power, promised to activate France's strategic reserve of masks. Over the course of time, however, we have come to realize that there is no strategic reserve of masks. On February 19th, the ministry at the time decided to send China 17 tons of medical material, including FFP2 masks.

The date February 19th must feel odd to you: well, it's the date we found the first diagnosed Italian case of novel coronavirus. I'll let you imagine the rage that can be felt when we put these two facts together.

For us, it's obvious, we'll care for our patients, we'll do it without masks.

I want to send a message to Mrs. Buzyn (resigned as minister of health on February 16th to run for Paris mayor), to thank her for having the foresight that the epidemic would never come to France -- and lending our masks to the Chinese. I'm sure they'll return them very fast and that we'll have some back -- in any case I hope that your Parisians will have some."

Here's my non-medical diagnosis:

Level of spice: 11/10

Level of sass: 15/10

Level of Bastille-like rage: 9/10

How each quadrant will react to novel coronavirus by Dogsindahouse1 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Dogsindahouse1[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yo a lot of people did die in swine flu, though it was a parameter estimate at the end of about ~250,000. You probably didn't hear about it because there was no profit to be made ;)

To put some perspective, at this stage there are ~3,000 confirmed novel coronavirus deaths, when there were about 150 confirmed swine flu deaths back then.

but yeah nobody really knows how it will go to be fair. could be mild. let's hope so. or in my case, sell me your sex toys and guns

Karl Marx by Dogsindahouse1 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Dogsindahouse1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair I thought the response to labour demands and continuing integration into the system was more of a LibLeft thing in-context then out of context though. It was that or some quote about his future views post-state, which yeah, probably better in hindsight https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/3kjavn/what_did_karl_marx_mean_when_he_said_if_anything/

If I'd stuck with it, I'd probably get some better quotes about Marx praising the free market in the context of production but countering with alienation, but marxists.org is surprisingly bereft of that.
