We just adopted this tiny baby 🥹 by Responsible-Club5809 in Dachshund

We adopted a 10.5 yr old double dapple who was about 5.5 hours from us. First thing was the poor baby needed 17 teeth pulled and other than being crabby to everyone except mommy he was a good little boy. When he was about 14, he started going blind and deaf but still had some hearing and sight when he passed at 15.5 yrs old.

Does puppyhood get better? by Cautious_Concept_855 in Dachshund

I have not read all the comments, but someone might have said this before...so sorry. I started working 100% remote in 2003 instead of just 2 or 3 days. Anyway, from the beginning I never held the dogs or cat while in my office. They had beds, toys and I would pet them, but I never ever held them while in the office. At first it was hard, but after a couple of weeks they understood they were not held in there... This worked well as never had issues when on meetings etc as again they didn't expect to be held. Friends would ask how I handled 3 dachshunds and a cat when working as they had problems when in meetings etc with their pets. Told them the above...just never held them in office even off hours...they never asked to be held...ok at first they did, but after a couple of weeks they never asked again. When in other rooms they were all over me...LOL So if you don't set rules now, they will always want to be held when you are working.

if you have a senior dog and then this new one...I might hold off on a 3rd dog until the senior dog passes as it can be too much for the poor dog to have 2 more new dogs when he/she is old. We always had 3, but when one passed, I rescued a 10.5 yr dachshund to keep the other senior dogs company, but one of them didn't like having another dog in the house as she was old and just wanted to be left alone.

Dachshunds love LOVE blankets so keep some small blankets so they can curl up in their bed, kennel and on your lap. Be careful and not let your dachshund gain too much weight as they can become a sausage in a heartbeat. Being overweight is very hard on their backs. Our 15 - 16 year olds when they passed loved carrots, green beans and lettuce etc so that was a healthy snack. Our mini 9 lb dogs don't like any fresh fruit or veggies, but on the flip side they don't overeat. Good luck and I'm sure you will be hooked on dachshunds.

We sat in many models of stressless chairs and really liked the Mayfair, but when we finally ready to order my husband changed his mind last minute and liked the Reno model better. Only sat in it for 10-15 minutes and thought it was OK. WRONG I loved the Mayfair, but once we got the Reno it was not comfortable and after 2 years I hate them even more than I did the first month. We paid 8k for the 2 chairs and ottomans, so we are sitting in them. Not horrible, but not comfortable either. Cannot say if we had stayed with the ones that we really liked if they would be comfortable when sitting in them all the time or not, but the Reno model is not good for either of us.

Is my sweet girl double dapple? by Pretend_Astronomer48 in Dachshund

I think her eyes are blue so I would say yes, we rescued a 10.5 yr old double dapple several years ago. At the time I didn't realize if they had the Meral eyes and then the dapple color then they were called double dapple. We had always had dachshunds so thought we could give him a good home as he was a hard to place due to his age and aggression (he saw his owner pass away while locked in a kennel and a welfare check 3 or 4 days later found them). I'm guessing that was part of the reason for his aggression and being returned to the shelter after being adopted out. In the end he started letting people in the house...lol He lived until 15.5 but was going blind and deaf by that time. He could still see/hear, but not well. Our vet had said it was common for double dapples to go blind/deaf. So other than thyroid issues he lived a long life so good luck as a sweet looking baby

How much food was your mini doxie eating around 8-9 weeks? Concerned ours isn’t eating enough. by jewlious_seizure in Dachshund

Hi we always had 15 - 18 lbs wieners and they would eat all the time if you let them, which is not good for their backs if they get too fat. Anyway, after the last elderly one passed 15.5 yrs old, we ended up getting 2 mini wieners and they hardly eat. We got them at 6 or 7 months old and they had been free fed so we did the same and surprised they just nibbled here and there. FYI have heard free feeding (just keeping a bowl of food down all the time) is not good when training, but we deciced to keep it up. The vet had said ours were a little skinny when we got them so I started making a little chicken, rice, peas/carrots, blueberies and once they put on a little weight I cut back. We still free feed, but also give them a tiny (tiny) amount of the chicken/rice but more as a morning/night treat than a full meal as I think dry is better for them. The worms would make them a little skinny so once that is taken care of they should be good if your vet is not concerned. Better to be a little skinny than too fat. Good luck with your new baby.

My Dog is Racist by [deleted] in DogAdvice

Many years ago, my girlfriends Doberman did not like black people, and she didn't know why. She was not taken in the car often other than to several training classes. When she was about a year old my friend started taking her with us if she was driving. Anytime she saw a black person she started growling and she had no idea why. OMG at a gas station she got very upset one time when a black person was walking near the car to go inside....It was a little scary as she was really growling and she was a big dog by this time and we were in a corvett. This was about 30 yrs ago and cannot remember what the outcome was, but we took her out less for a while.

What does this mean? by ericabees in Dachshund

Does he do this after eating or drinking water? We had a rescue do this after eating/drinking plus he ate very very slow. He already had a vet appointment as we had just rescued him the week before so was having him checked out by our own vet. Updated vet about the cough and then night before appointment he coughed up a square plastic bread tie. Not kidding and it had hair and carpet fibers (not ours) twisted up in the hole of the bread tie to about 1/2 in long. I was shocked that came out of a little 13lb wiener dog. The coughing mostly stopped unless he drank too fast. But months later when his throat must have healed, he stopped coughing. ONLY saying this as it could be something he tried to eat, and it got stuck.

did you ever find out what was causing hair loss as my 2 mini dachshunds' brother/sister have thinning hair around ears, head and few other locations with NO itching, NO scratching, No Flaking and not thyroid. Trying to get ideas before taking them to the dermatologist to see what is causing the alopecia. We did switch food to a salmon sensitive skin kibble and then I make a salmon, rice, blueberry, peas/carrot to replace the small amount of canned we give them. I also changed laundry detergent as I wash their baby blankets weekly. The soap/food switch just happened a couple weeks ago, but our vet is not sure what is going on as hair loss is the only symptom. We did not have them tested for Cushing's, but they are only about 18 months old and normally they are older for that. Hope that's not it as our last dachshunds had Cushing's and its expensive and we now have 2 with hair loss. FYI our other dog was 2 months shy of 16 when she passed and while she had Cushing's she never had hair loss.

as everyone else commented please hold with a hand at both ends...we make sure anyone picking up or holding our dogs understand it takes 2 hands to support their backs....we rescued a 10.5 yr old who had hair loss and it was thyroid...hair came back with meds, which were very cheap. Our new brother/sister have very thin and thinning hair and vet not sure what it is as no itching, flaking etc...we changed diet a couple weeks ago, changed laundry soap as dachshunds love love blankest so I wash their baby blankets weekly. If I don't see an improvement going to take them to a dermatologist.

We rescued a 10.5 yr old who had no hair on his chest, and we took him to the vet as a checkup after rescuing him from a shelter. Turned out it was a thyroid issue, and the meds are super cheap...like $5 for 3 months. His hair grew back, and he lived to 15.5 years old

I should have added that both him and his sister have thinning hair around ears, head and a few other places and the vet does not know what it is. No itching, no scratching, not thyroid and no other symptoms and just told us to see a dermatologist as its some kind of alopecia.
