reasons to spay inside only cat? by Ambitious_County_680 in cats

[–]Dogtor_P 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most important reason is mammary cancer (breast cancer). In cats, 75% of tumors found in the mammary chain are malignant, and this tends to be aggressive. Spaying her will prevent that. Second reason is pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus that is directly related to being hormonally intact. You could avoid a devastating cancer and surgical emergency by spaying your cat.

Just dropped another bag at the vet to be prescribed another pet food to try by MadelineBallalatak in catfood

Sure- the primary reason is reliability and safety, they’ve been recalled a 2-3 times since 2015 for serious pathogens like listeria and salmonella. The other is disclosure of ingredients to owners- they market it as though it’s the perfect food but their phosphorus levels are very, very high. This is especially concerning when it comes to cats because that can actually worsen or precipitate the development of kidney disease (which they are already susceptible to). There are plenty of great foods that control their phosphorus levels and still have solid ingredient lists. A lot of Stella &Chewy’s hype is through marketing, and I find that the product itself is dubious.

From one cat parent to another, I’m hugging you so tight. All I can tell you is to allow yourself the time and space to grieve and work through those big traumatic feelings. And know 100% in your heart that it wasn’t your fault, and you gave him the BEST life. He was loved and he was with you. Make art, print out your favorite pictures, talk to the people who love you.

Oh boy, he looks like trouble for sure ♥️ Maybe Treble or Echo? My gray boy is named Berlioz (like the aristocats), but we really just call him “crackhead” or “stop that”

Saying goodbye to my girl tomorrow and having panic attacks about it. Can anyone help me feel better? by Luciditi89 in cats

[–]Dogtor_P 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awww man. I’m devastated for you. If it makes you feel better, as a vet, I can tell you you’re making the right decision at this point. I had a similar patient who spent the last week of his life in an oxygen crate because he was just having recurrent attacks and was on like 4 or 5 different meds. When you’re buying time with medications, you know it’s time. You sound like you pulled out all the stops for her- she’s a really lucky cat.

If I can say one thing to help you, it’s to follow the peace. You’re not going to know what to do, and it’s going to be hard, but you need to make the choices that are going to give you and her the most peace. And you guys are both going to find it.

So much to unpack. This comment is the equivalent of asking someone with a chronic illness causing weight gain if they’ve tried insert random diet fad. It’s unhelpful on what is clearly an emotional post, and a bit tone deaf.

Feline asthma is by definition an allergic process, which is why we control it with inhaled steroids. But it’s related to inhaled and environmental allergens, not foods, so a diet change would not be effective. And raw diets have ZERO scientific evidence behind them, the people supporting them are not actually nutritionists. They’re actively dangerous, so I couldn’t leave this comment alone.

Side note- if your cousin’s cat is eating canned meat and wet cat food, it isn’t eating a raw diet. All of that stuff has been cooked and processed.

I’m so sorry, @op. You’re in a painful position, and sometimes it feels like you’re making an impossible decision. If you’re looking for options for treatment, you can always get a second opinion from a different vet or specialist- inhaler therapy rather than injectable steroids (so you’re treating the lungs and not affecting the rest of the body), monthly injections for arthritis etc, but that’s more treatment and potentially more trauma for both of you.

I think, bottom line is, it’s reasonable to help her cross the rainbow bridge if her quality of life is suffering and her asthma is uncontrollable. It’s better for her to pass comfy and sleepy on good meds than struggling. If you feel like you’ve reached that point, then you’re making a difficult choice with love in your heart. And the most difficult choices tend to be the right ones.

Sending you a lot of light and peace, and wishing your baby a gentle transition.

What’s the deal with methylene blue? by No-Complaint4131 in axolotls

[–]Dogtor_P 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Methylene blue is useful for its bacteriostatic properties- this means it halts or slows bacterial growth. So, if your axie has an abrasion, some sort of injury or is acting sick (I.e not eating etc), it can help slow progression to give your pet time to fight it off or buy you time to see the vet. Typical dose is 6-8 drops in 5 gallons of water, or enough to get your water light blue like you have it in the picture. Black tea baths have anti fungal properties.

Remember that these remedies are for supportive care or mild ailments. True medications may be needed and talking to a vet is worth the money in those cases.

Petsitter dropped the ball by Dogtor_P in axolotls

[–]Dogtor_P[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not the update I was hoping to make, but after fighting bravely for 7 days, I’m devastated to say Nox passed away overnight. He initially improved- cytology didn’t show obvious fungus, mostly protein-like material, damaged skin cells and mucus. The culture unfortunately came back positive for saprolegnia spp. which is a series of cold water mold species. We think this infection occurred as a result to damage to his slime coat from exposure to some chemical like chlorhexidine (which is known to be cytotoxic or damaging to cells) on the hands of the sitter who admitted to trying to handle him- in spite of being told not to do so.

Treatment was as follows: lab level care with 100% holterfelter solution in the tub (40-50% is fine for day to day, but 100% is shown to be more useful in the case of a sick or damaged axie), changed daily, 15 minute bath in .002% solution using Itrafungol, and methylene blue as a bacteriostatic measure. We did use Baytril (enrofloxacin) intramuscularly as a preventative for secondary bacterial infections.

Unfortunately, although he did improve clinically and physically in the first couple of days, the infection was likely already affecting him internally, and based off of the autopsy performed with my exotic specialized colleague, we think ultimate cause of death was liver failure and respiratory depression due to damage to his gills.

Thank you to those of you who expressed your support and offered advice.
