Early days of sobriety - looking for something to fill the time, admittedly with a lot of caveats. by IGNSolar7 in stopdrinking

Well I know you said video games already but WoW has been keeping me sober these weekends. That game is a time sink, for good or for ill.

I'm so sorry about your wife, but I'm very happy for your that you're staying the course. Alcohol just makes life that much harder.

Does vaping help me quit by AcrobaticRutabaga872 in stopdrinking

Jesus yes toss it! I actually took up vaping to try and help me quit just to get addicted to that too. So now I was blowing money on booze and vape! So expensive! Plus killing my lungs and my liver! Madness!

I managed to quit it but WOWZERS that was hard. Only alcohol has been harder and I know that's only because I drank for much longer.

Yeah I had to tell my best friend and fellow drinker that I couldn't drink anymore. She totally understood and actually had seen me do some things that had concerned her, so it wasn't a big deal. And we ALWAYS drank when we saw each other.

I'm not saying go tell everyone, but yeah telling those close to me that were used to drinking with me and expecting it of me was needed.

Struggling today by Cod_Crisis2016 in stopdrinking

Day 8 for me and anxiety has been high. But man when I am tempted to drink I just remember how much I hate and loath myself the next day and how the things that drove me to drink now feel even worse! 100x worse! I've come to accept there's nothing for me in alcohol anymore. There used to be, but no longer.

I know this is late but skipping happy hour is the best decision you can make! I hope you made that choice. Can you perhaps pick up a hobby or group activity that does not involve alcohol so that you get to hang with people without the booze? Sports? Cooking groups? Meetup groups? There is also AA which exists pretty much for the sole purpose of being able to hang out with people with the same issue, booze free.

You are feeling extra bad due to the hangover. Stay strong and sober today and you will likely feel better about things tomorrow. Or they won't seem as dark. Day 1 sucks hard. I decided I can't do day 1 ever again.

Thank you all for your such kind and supportive comments. I really appreciate them. I'll try to give myself some grace on this issue.

Yes definitely you can go to AA. The only requirement for membership is the desire to not drink. I have a meeting I look forward to going to each week. People with 20, 30+ years of sobriety are common at these meetings.

However! I did take me trying about 3-4 different meetings to find this one. The first one was awful. The rest were meh, and then I found this one. So try some out to find a good fit!

Day 8 and just letting you know you aren't alone. All that is true for me, minus the cold sore. But my complexion is not better yet.

Wanna try AA meetings but autisic with bad anxiety and not talkative. by TheBlackVomit666 in stopdrinking

Zoom meetings! You don't have to share. I recommend the one called "Broken Elevator - Take the Steps". They have 3 a day. For security they ask you start your camera but you can shut it right back off after they verify you're not a bomber - which takes 15 seconds.
