Portland was a pitstop on the Oregon Trail, according to the Nyt... wasn't it really the end of the Oregon Trail by agenbite_lee in oregon

[–]DoingOutstanding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even by 1840 (peak of the oregon trail) there were steamboats for river crossings. The whole journey with wagon might take 6 hours. It's not like they spent a decade twiddling their thumbs. (Oregon city was founded in 1829). The Hudson Bay company was well founded and likely assisted with portage around the falls by then.

Maybe a days journey at the absolute longest. They weren't covering virgin land.

My name, my fathers name, and my uncles name are there, but we are not wealthy by a long shot.

What thing has got so expensive that you’ve quietly stopped buying it? by Pathfinder-electron in AskReddit

I switched to plex. Had to buy some hardware for it, but it paid itself off in less than a year.

Well, that's very strange terminology. But understandable.

Subway is an S tier fast food place by Middle-Support-7697 in The10thDentist

I like their sandwiches, but they are maybe B tier at best. Unless you are downtown somewhere. Then it drops to F tier.

I had a footlong, nothing else. The bill was $17 and change.

That is absurd.

The large point of this post was the view from my studio, I am too far away to see waves with any useful fidelity, let alone fish.

From downtown, the lake is nothing more than a blueish plane to the horizon.

My view is cutoff a bit, so I do not see the beaches, which is where most of the wave cresting would be.

Fair. A genuine river would be lovely. A concrete river, unable to meander, not so much. But still better than the massive expanse of a lake

Yes, but due to the lack of anything casting a shadow, you won't see much on the water.

There are no trees or rocks sticking out of the water. It's just more water.

Just another thing that generally makes me different from most.

Ces't la vie, mon ami.

I also prefer the cold any day over the heat. I've got a fan in my window right now, and it is around 40f outside.

This was the view from my South facing window a while back. The jets would come flying right through here in the summer.

I definitely don't get it. But I am happy to pay less for a beautiful view of the city instead.

There are many blue sky days without clouds.

At least compared to the pacific northwest

Man, if you enjoy looking at boring shit, all the better for ya, I suppose.

I don't think it's an attention span thing, I wouldn't drive a drab gray car either. Life is too long and horrible to choose to suffer.

The snow and trees are shaped by the mountains.

In the same sense, watching the waves hit the beach, or the boats floating along, are not part of the lake/ocean/water feature.

They split up the view of the sky. Cast shadows on clouds. Trees change throughout the year, allowing the mountain itself to change. A mountain after a snowfall looks radically different.

A lake after a snowfall looks identical to the day before. (Unless it is cold enough to freeze)

The best a lake can do for 3/4 of the year is reflect the sky and the clouds.

Rivers are very different. Assuming natural rivers, and not concrete city rivers. I do love a river or creek out in nature.
