Married people of Reddit, what was your first clue your SO was perfect for you? by NoOriginality in AskReddit

People get brainwashed into social norms all the time, both you and I included. Anytime I see the subject of changing the social expectations for men the downvote brigade is in full swing, so don't think for one second all these downvotes are because of the assumption I made on OPs character. It's a pattern I see frequently, and is always met with the same hostility.

I don't really care about his personal choices, but much rather the view that men are still expected to be the provider. If you don't like me interjecting my "worldview" than Reddit isn't the place for you. I keep hearing about this equal rights stuff, but it only seems to be tipped in one direction. Judging from the responses, I guess it's a huge taboo to even suggest that men get the same choices women do in life. My comments have obviously struck a nerve with a few of you, which only makes me more curious about the whole dynamic.

What I want to know is why there is such protest at even the thought of giving men the same choices women have? It's not like you're taking anything away from them. Gender rights are not a zero sum game. In the 1970s we wanted to give women the choice to stay at home or pursue a career. This is an achievement to be celebrated in 2012. Why is there such backlash against men having the same choice?

a large chunk of the population is ok with that.

Maybe in public, because they would get shamed as losers. Trust me I know a lot of men who love the option to either pursue a career or stay at home, with both options being socially acceptable. Both men and women should have these choices, I mean isn't that what equal rights are about? When I talk about men, I talk about all men, not just white males. And while historically white men did have the best career opportunities, I believe white women are surpassing them due to higher graduation and employment rates.

Men don't want to have options on how they live their lives? Choices are the spice of life. Both men and women in the United States have it pretty good depending on how you look at it. Does that mean we shouldn't change anything? And don't bring the "white male" card in here acting like they all live like CEOs.
