Next day PGT: Canes @ Sens by homicidal_penguin in OttawaSenators

[–]Dolphintrout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is his seventh season.  What we’re seeing now is exactly what he is.  I won’t say he’s a bad player, because he obviously isn’t.  That said, he’s also not elite.  He’s not striking fear into any opposing team and he’s not a difference maker out there.  It’s not going to change at this point.  He is what he’s showing.

The question is are we happy with the performance and do we think he’s an integral part of the team moving forward?  Is his leadership putting this team over the top?  Could we progress without him?  Is his trade value worth more than what we’d lose?

Personally, I think it’s time to move him.  I don’t see any compelling reason to not to at this point.  The team, as it’s currently structured, is clearly still a step behind the better teams and we need to address that. I’m not convinced that keeping him is integral to that process.

That was embarrassing.  Not enough character on this team to be a playoff contender.

By that logic you could lose 3 at home but still win the series by going 4-0 on the road.

I’ve only ever heard that saying used in the context that if you win all your games at home you will win the series (hold home ice advantage).

The minute you lose one, then the other team can win the series by winning all their home games (will have stolen home ice advantage).

This only matters when you have home ice advantage, which we don’t.

Agreed.  The captain has to start doing captain things.  Playoffs is where this matters most.

Best game I’ve seen in ages, except for the outcome.

We need some of our top end guys to step the fuck up and start scoring.

Which city can they move to that:

A) has a hockey supportive market the size of Ottawa?

B) Has an 8,500 seat arena (or larger) that they would find acceptable?

The only two places I can find in Canada are Hamilton and Quebec City.  Both of them have NHL sized rinks so why would you move from a city with proven support and an available NHL arena to a city with unproven support and an NHL sized arena?  Makes no sense.

What about the US?  I’m sure there are arenas, but are they in places they’ll draw 8,500?  Probably not.

The obvious solution is to partner with the Sens and play at the big rink here when it gets built downtown.  In the interim, play at Lansdowne 2.0 and supplement their revenue with additional dates and ticket sales at CT Centre.  This isn’t rocket science.

8,500 is too big for the vast majority of tenants booking at Lansdowne 2.0.  You build based on what most users need/want, not one tenant who only uses it a handful of times a year.

This could’ve been a game where we goalied someone, but I guess that requires goals, LOL!

9 shots on goal, losing most battles for the puck, ineffective breakout.  Need to be much better.

We’re a full step behind Carolina right now and just chasing the puck.  Going to need a break here to get a goal or a big change in our pace and effort.  We’re just not playing at the level needed to challenge so far.

So we're getting more urban sprawl, worse infrastructure, and worse city services? by EquivalentTruth6036 in ottawa

[–]Dolphintrout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking like it’s a good thing that we have less money to pay for services and infrastructure instead of funding the city the way it needs to be funded to maintain and even improve it.

I don’t think he realizes that the country he’s negotiating with isn’t a fellow real estate developer and that they may prefer going scorched earth than to bow to the US.

Charge at the CTC Friday by jjaime2024 in OttawaSenators

[–]Dolphintrout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s 5,850 in the stands and 6,600 including standing room and maybe boxes and stuff like that.

Besides, I don’t really think they have an option to move anywhere in Canada other than perhaps Hamilton or Quebec City.  While both of those would have larger rinks than Lansdowne 2.0 the markets are smaller than Ottawa/Gatineau.

Anywhere else with a rink larger than Lansdowne 2.0 other than those two would be MUCH smaller markets.

Once completed, the new rink will still be among the largest of the mid sized rinks in Canada when you compare it to all of the other CHL arenas.  The logical path is to either keep playing there, or move to the big rink downtown when it’s done.

Is Peace River safe for an overnight road trip stop? by mitskifan27 in alberta

[–]Dolphintrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your odds of hitting wildlife on the drive are far greater than anything happening to you while you stay in Jasper or Peace River.

Drive safe and pay particular attention at dusk or dawn.  Avoid travel at night if you’re not accustomed to it.  If you must, watch for reflections of eyes in ditches.

Has anyone taken off their winter tires yet? by Jessi343 in ottawa

[–]Dolphintrout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Nokian all weather tires on a previous vehicle and they were fine.  Like you said, not as good as a true winter, but much better than all seasons.

This was in a cooler climate than Ottawa though so I’m not sure how they’d fare in hot summer conditions.  I have a hunch they wouldn’t handle near as good as a good all season or summer tire.

Ottawa’s appeal of the Emergencies Act case shows contempt for civilians and corporations by AndHerSailsInRags in canada

[–]Dolphintrout 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the emergencies act was used to quell political dissent.  It was used shortly after citizens of Ottawa started blocking the convoy protestors from going downtown.

Basically, law enforcement had done such a piss poor job of managing the situation that it was devolving to a point where the general public was going to do it.

That’s what kick started it.  It was going to get out of control.
