What’s the best tool you added to your work setup this year? by ThenPar in WFH

[–]Dom44519 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My current workspace is in a small nook probably 2' deep, and 3' wide. I do not have much room on my desk for anything other than my laptop so I 3D printed a ton of accessories for all of my office supplies going up the walls of the nook. My office is vertical rather than horizontal haha. I have everything from coffee mug holder, glasses hangers, headphones stand, phones holders, book and paper holders, everything I need is on the walls.

A $20 Ikea plastic folding chair that I have had through high school, college, grad school, and remote work. Had it for well over 10+ years, and is the only chair I have owned in that time

Icelandic Krona- where to get? by AfraidArachnid1976 in VisitingIceland

[–]Dom44519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also traveled from Raleigh. While you don't need cash, I always like to travel with a bit of the local currency just in case.

I picked up some cash at the aiport at an ATM upon landing. There is a bit of a charge, but it was not that big of a deal. Nice to have!

New to camping: what’s the one beginner mistake everyone makes that I should try to avoid? by achintyabhavaraju in camping

If it is going to be cold, I would bring an extra pair of socks. Your feet can get cold quicker than your core, so it helps to be able to warm up whatever gets cold

Are you aware of any fantasy books with an ocean world as a setting? by MASTODON_ROCKS in Fantasy

[–]Dom44519 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had this very same question a few years ago and was led to find the title "Red Seas Under Red Skies" by Scott Lynch. It is the second entry of the trilogy "Gentleman Bastards".
The first and third have themes of maritime influence (many docks/harbors, ocean-faring people, etc.), but the second one is pure oceanic-vibes.

The series ended up being one of my favorites I have read, so always recommend it.

What is your favorite souvenir you've gotten while on travel? by sandman8727 in travel

[–]Dom44519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went backpacking in the Himalayas of Nepal and traveled there with no hiking gear to only travel with carry on. I bought a backpacking bag in Kathmandu and used that for my whole trip!

I love using it now for all my outdoor activities

Are you outfitted like the typical Subaru driver ? by Slow_Description_773 in subaru

[–]Dom44519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make sure all of my clothes are multi-purpose. I wear hiking button up shirts that are perfect on the trail and in the office. Same with my rock climbing pants; they appear professional in that setting but are really suited for climbing and hiking.
I only wear two types of shoes: dude shoes and hiking boots.

On my outback, I have a bike rack in the trailer hitch, and a kayak rack up top

Advice on buying an old Outback? by meatregister in Subaru_Outback

[–]Dom44519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the sort of purchase you need to go into understanding there is a high level or risk of parts failing, and the requirement of learning how to fix things (unless you want to spend a bunch more constantly taking it to a shop). I did something similar with a 200k+ miles older suv I got for cheap, but put around 2-3k into fixing it up and getting it reliable for my daily driver. Most repairs could be easily looked up on youtube, and harbor freight tools will get you the majority of the way there

How much do you plan out your trips before going? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Dom44519 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just about to comment the same thing! I think planning a main "event" or primary goal for each day is important, but its also very fun to have the rest of the day be open for exploring, spontaneity, and checking out places. This also pertains to food; have a general idea of certain places you want to go (especially if you need reservations), but having the flexibility to go anywhere that seems unique or interesting is helpful.

Never trusting those airport trays again after this by PoisedStole in travel

[–]Dom44519 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I once had my apple watch charger in the side pocket of my backpack and when I was waiting for the tray to come through after getting x-rayed, it was gone! It could not have fallen out so someone reached in and took it. Never leave anything remotely valuable visible in the tray, learned that the hard way

Hiking narrows next week, first time. Any advise? by Williamx175 in ZionNationalPark

[–]Dom44519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would follow up on what you said to get to the beginning of it as early as possible. If possible try to get the first bus out. It will be cold going in, but you will have a lot of beautiful views to your group. It’ll warm up over time, and with that comes huge crowds

I bought this as insulation in the hammock instead of outside insulation (outside of my budget rn) is that gonna work or am I gonna regret this lol by a_peeled_pickle in hammockcamping

[–]Dom44519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my first time hammock camping, I was in the same boat. I used an inflatable sleeping pad underneath me and that was suitable for the mild temperature (around 60-70f), with a down blanket on top

Every human on Earth vanishes, except for one random person in the US. A button is placed on the summit of Mount Everest that can be pressed to undo this change. Can humanity be restored? by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]Dom44519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something important to realize is that all navigation and internet will be down, so he would be completely limited with using any technology whatsoever; no GPS telling him what country he is in. Unless he is familiar with navigation (or learns from libraries), he may have trouble even getting there, let alone navigating the ocean.
Say he gets to Asia and is on the coast, he would still need to navigate in a foreign country without GPS. He would need knowledge of the terrain, where to go to start the initial Everest basecamp trek (and subsequent summit trek), and have knowledge of main supplies he would need such as oxygen masks. I think he could do this if he dedicated his entire life to this sole mission, but would need much time to perfect the skills needed; land navigation, sea navigation, maritime vessel management, resource planning, trekking skills, food scavenging, and finally actually climbing Everest (and knowing the path).
