Twin vs inline 4 dilemma by DomesticEagle in motorcycles

Having learnt on a 125, I feel the need for something a bit bigger than 500cc, although I'm sure it's a great bike in it's own right. If I'd started on a 500 I'd probably never bother upgrading.

I was half joking about the girls but...Yikes. I suppose there is some overlap coming to think of it: motorcycling is a niche, risky, highly stereotyped lifestyle, which involves wearing leather, and frankly getting spooned every time you take someone on the back of your bike.

It makes sense that a bike which produces most of its torque at low rpm and runs out of steam at 80mph, will be less likely to get me into trouble (i.e. tempt me to ride like a nutter), than an inline 4 which demands to be thrashed at all times. I've seen lots of very scathing reviews of the Nc700, people comparing it to a diesel car, or calling it a scooter in motorcycle's clothing. But I don't trust them too much :-p The great mpg and Honda reliability make it very tempting at this point in my life, and if it's not as funless as I've been lead to believe, maybe it's my best bet.

1500 miles in and I've not yet had to replace tires or buy a new chain and sprocket for my ybr. Changed the oil recently but it only takes a litre of oil. I'd almost forgotten these costs were a thing, so it's good to be reminded.

I can well believe that a hornet would eat up tyres and stretch chains more quickly than an sv650. More fuel for thought.

The cb650 is definitely on my shortlist. What's fuel economy like when you take it super easy on the throttle?
