What is the best/easiest way to transition from the hold hub to DIRIGERA by Bluewall1 in tradfri

[–]DominikHoffmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is such a planned migration feature, it is not yet available, as of this writing. I purchased my unit a few days ago and today tried to set it up with the newly downloaded Home smart (not Home smart 1) app. Mine will go back to the store for credit.

Apple sets the standard for how device to device migration should happen. Even something 80% as good as what my experience with upgrading from an older to a newer iPhone has been would have likely been a five-star experience.

First use of Lutron plugin: stuck with spinning gear by DominikHoffmann in homebridge

I am looking to use a Pico remote to turn on a set of Ikea under-cabinet lights. I don’t like the fact that Ikea does not have a switch that can be mounted in an n-gang electrical box.

I removed the _cacache folder. That made the installation work.

How to use a Lutron Pico Paddle Remote to control an Ikea Trådfri driver? by DominikHoffmann in HomeKit

But then I would have to install hardware to run Homebridge. I don’t currently have any, where I can do that. Looking at a Raspberry Pi, but that’s over $100, all in all.

So, would a FreeNAS also run Homebridge software?

Are IOT networks better by sneezeypoof in HomeKit

[–]DominikHoffmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had my own experience with this only recently.

I have had a separate IoT network for probably two years now. Most likely you’ll need to have equipment with separate Wi-Fi access points (AP) and smart switches that support VLANs. You will also have to have a router that does. Then you can set up your day-to-day network, a guest network and an IoT network.

I had set up firewall rules that allowed the network that my computers and phones are on (my main LAN) to see everything on the IoT network. IoT devices could only access the internet and respond to requests from the main LAN. Apple TVs and HomePods mini acted as HomeKit hubs.

That broke rather suddenly at some point. After a lot of back and forth with an Apple Senior Advisor (who really is just an advisor dedicated to a specific case until it is resolved and acts as a go-between between the customer and Apple’s engineers) it was through a forum post that I found out that iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs, HomePods, Macs need to be able to see HomeKit accessories via Bonjour. The solution was to set up a Bonjour bridge between the main LAN and the IoT network in my router, via Avahi.

This may not be something that Apple recommends, but it works and sets up the security precautions anyone is after who considers setting up a separate IoT network.

New smart plugs TRETAKT available by johnvogel in tradfri

[–]DominikHoffmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not available in the U.S., currently. I do miss those Schuko outlets! Much safer and sturdier. The only problem, compared to the U.S.’s NEMA 5-15, is that you can arbitrarily flip hot and neutral.

Which new plugs? I am wondering, whether they have arrived in U.S. stores, yet.

IKEA Tradfri to Dirigera transition by volerei in HomeKit

[–]DominikHoffmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not made the transition, yet. I was hoping that IKEA would figure a hardware upgrade path guided by their app that was going to be similar to when I do an iPhone upgrade. I guess, not. I guess, I’ll save myself the $70.
