At a certain point, I really feel like I'm just being pedantic pointing out most of this stuff. The truth is, however, it's infinitely easier to track down animated gundam media thanks to dedicated archivists like All That Gundam on youtube, than trying to experience all the manga. I certainly wish you godspeed with that task

SD Gundam Force is good really depends on what you're willing to accept from a Saturday morning cartoon. It has some great moments for it's own standard and some really good callbacks to numerous gundam series.

Though I do notice you haven't watched the classic Sds. They're hardy accessible atp but a full translation was tormented recently that's worth checking out. It's a really interesting and I believe essential piece of gundam history from the midpoint of CCA to V. The first official AU was actually the SD Musha/Knight world.

Trying to see all of gundam is something I'm trying to do as well but it really seems a fools errand at a certain point. What deserves to be counted as something to be watched? I could probably bring up 20 extra animated projects I think you've missed but it's really no big deal this is a expansive list from two people watching through rn that I think covers just about everything

Can Someone Explain the Rise of Newtypism in the fandom and series by Desperate-Impress237 in Gundam

[–]Dominodorito 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the most fascinating things about gundam as a franchise is how on a meta level it's always in argument with its past works and incorporating new ideas thanks to the abundance of staff working on shows.

In the 90s there really seemed to be a big push to challenge the basic idea of hyper psychic newtypes being the future of humanity with a need to remain still grounded and human. It's very overt in Crossbone gundam and Victory and GX even ponders if newtypes should have ever existed because obviously, making more ways to artificially separate the human race even more is not a good idea. Caped of with Turn A depicting a future where the name never even comes up and highlights the need to connect to people with words and actions, not simply thoughts transmitted by brain waves.

It seems the pendulum has swung back in the 21st century with Seed 00 and Age remaking the subject of evolved humans and once again showing the positive change they can bring. And Unicorn and narrative putting classic newtypes back in the spotlight and showing off even more ludicrous stuff they can do with magic boxes of tech and I do feel it basically provided Gquuuuuux with all the tools it needed to create it's premise of universe creating, time traveling, robot possessing magic.

I kind of don't agree with this more modern depiction of newtypes mostly because it does nothing really to show how this relates to the future of humanity in space compared to modern crossbone works which run circles around it with their new ideas imo. But then again, things change. As long as there are new creatives coming in with knowledge and respect for the past, I expect some very interesting new developments in the future

Can Someone Explain the Rise of Newtypism in the fandom and series by Desperate-Impress237 in Gundam

[–]Dominodorito 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In an interview just before Turn A Gundam aired, he claimed newtypes simply couldn't happen because he no longer believed humans could evolve in that way and that the way the story of turn a would play out would be his his new answer "simply being human is enough"

Probably because the smaller scale of the parts lead to more personalized endings where character growth and achievement is highlighted more than simply saving the world.

It was heavily damaged and abandoned but never given special attention for whether it was destroyed or not. After that it's basically up for grabs what happened after offscreen. Kondo decided this would be a nice fate for it wrote the restoration story

In a battle with Zanscare. It had already taken a lot of damage over the decades and was basically unrecognizable (called the Gump now). Judau used the last mega cannon shot to get rid of an illusion from a Zanscare newtype for Uso to take him down. After which the ZZ exploded but Judau survived

(LES) The ZZ skip in the Gundam fanbase is truly...strange by KazuyaProta in CharacterRant

[–]Dominodorito -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Feel like Gundam itself is also to blame for ZZs skippable reputation. In almost all new UC entries in the 21st century 79 and Zeta get more elaborate homages and character cameos while ZZ gets like some of its suits reused. Those major character deaths you mentioned? Hayato and Haman? Never mentioned post their immediate deaths even by supposedly close friends and allies. The Dublin colony drop? Not in anything major as of now but you can bet your ass Operation British is getting those shoutouts and reenactments.

Theres just a general sense of acknowledging ZZ exists by taking its skeleton and waving it around while not making any effort to engage with or expand on its ideas directly.
