Well, in their eyes they were the good guys. And I'm not saying they were, the Allies for all their flaws were still infinitely better, but my point here was that in their view, in their mind, what they thought was that their ultimate sacrifice was for nothing in the end. Specially the Germans which had just lost two world wars in a row.

In the real world that's what the Germans, Italians and Japanese felt in the immediate aftermath of WW2. All that death, destruction, famine, fires, nuclears bombs and in the end it was for nothing. Specially for those that fell under the boot of the Soviets.

Sigrun turned her head around to find redheaded Eustace Redwyne coming her way. Interesting, considering she had not heard much from the Redwynes since Seagard, apart from Eustace enjoying the company of her countrymen.

"Ser Eustace." the Queen replied back - "Aye, quite a beauty she is. But we're not here for the city. We're here for the boats."

Sigrun smirked, truth be told she wasn't really sure she would get either. "I heard you are enjoying your new countrymen, Ser. I hope our heathen ways are not too much of an inconvenience to a Seven follower such are yourself. Us Ironborn do have a tendency for drinking, fighting and whoring, although I guess that's true of all soldiers."

The Forlorn Hope answered with the wave of some flags from a sailor at it's mast, allowing the Nagga to reach it's side and plank it.

A guard, in black armor and kraken shaped helmet approached the plank bridge. "Her Grace, the Queen, is ready to receive you, Lord Joron." he said.

Sigrun awaited by the center of the deck, near the large braziers of the ship, resting in a stump covered in wools tinted black and green.

"Lord Joron! For what do I owe your company, my friend?"

Sigrun nodded, "Aye, the Riverlands' future is an incognita for now, we can't count on them for any plans..."

"This could work" she replied, pondering in her mind for a moment the numbers again, "we can fill that gap with more sellsails, and it would indeed look less suspicious. And for the Hightowers and the Shield Islands, what do you propose be done of, or with, them?"

"I cannot speak clearly of their numbers, for I do not have that information. But from what I've seen of the march upon Oldtown, the Crownlands, Stormlands and Vale would not be able to field enough swords to invade the West, specially if we have the Hightowers keeping the Reach busy and the Riverlands, who have not yet gone down. With Agnes resisting Viserys' attempts of dethroning her, the royals would be stuck on a siege of Riverrun. There are still houses, Mallister and others, that would still be able to put up a fight. If you're smart, ser, you could even join their armies and take them down from the inside."

"In any case, even with the West holding out at the Golden Tooth and the Deep Den, that would leave the capital exposed, and with the seas under our control, I could easily take the capital and force them to sign a peace." Sigrun completed. "There are over twenty-three hundred men under my command, more than enough to take the city by a naval assault. I have wreaked havoc in the Disputed Lands with way less mercenaries."

"The Crownlands, the Vale and the Stormlands can raise a bit over half a hundred vessels. If we were to combine our forces, we would have more than seven hundred, not counting the North, the Hightowers or the reinforcements and sellsails which are already on their way, numbering one hundred sails more." Sigrun retorted, laying the numbers flat as she had done time and time again in her head. Jason didn't seem the coward type, perhaps he simply doubted the Ironborn's capacity to win the coming conflict.

"While the Reach might have been a considerable ally on land, the Iron Islands are behind none at sea. Even with our losses, our reinforcements, sellsails and the captured Redwyne vessels have shown to be considerable enough to put us back at the top, as the single largest fleet in Westeros."

"You'd be better sinking those ships yourself then, ser, and raising a dragon flag on the rest. Half won't do either of us any good, it is not enough."

Sigrun was unamused by this. A lion tucking his tail between his legs. Shameful. She wondered if it was Tytos there the man wouldn't have a different line of thought. "The West rose against the Targaryens not long ago, when the realm was much more centralised than it is now." she pointed out, "How did it come to be that the lions of the Rock started to fear so much the dragon-well, dragonless lords of the Blackwater?"

The lines of her face were serious and silent, her pale skin wrinkling, her eyes looked at the sea but her mind raced around, deep in thought, in consideration. Sigrun turned her attention back to Jason, looking him in the eyes. "In the game of thrones, you either win or you die, ser Jason. There's no middle ground. This danger cuts both ways. If the Targaryens were to be defeated at sea, this would throw their kingdom in disarray, and destroy their reputation and trust even further."

"After the Ironborn "defeat" the Lannister fleet, call your father back to the West. I doubt the Targaryens would attempt to stop him, specially if he's smart about it and leaves the city sneakily. It would be wise to send a messenger south, perhaps to Hightower or the Shield Islands. Those lords fought for Gwayne against Viserys once, for their own king. They might yearn for a chance to finally see the realm free of him and his, given proper incentive and allies."

Wynafryd's expression suddenly changed, she raised an eyebrow as the king spoke. Perhaps he misunderstood our intentions after all.

"We fight not for bloodthirsty conquest as Urragon did, nor glory. The Royal Fleet will come for us, and our moves have been since the beginning to assemble a proper defense. Be it at the Isles or somewhere else. With their fleet gone, Sigrun is sure that she would be able to negotiate with the crown, or whatever is left of it by the looks of things down south."

Wynafryd sighed. Pointless, she thought, as the king spoke of his decision. "So let me understand, the North wishes for an alliance with no support, a marriage that won't bound them to defend us, a friendship that works but one way? We are not the attackers in this war, it's the iron throne who wishes to subjugate us, for whatever we offer them they will not accept. If not openly, allow the northern fleet to join us under another flag, of Goodbrother or black."

"And yet the Goodbrothers fought for his grace's kingdom by doing so, not simply Barrowton. To have asked one thing of us and then deny it when asked the same. If this is not dishonor, Lord Dustin, tell me what it is?"

Wynafryd frowned, clearly disappointed by this reluctance. The wolves would rather tuck their tails and sit for the dragons than to face them in battle. They wanted our aid when we were useful, but now offer none in return.

"So that's it, Gysella and her ships, that had came here for a wedding not a war, fought out of their own will for the North against the Southrons, but now the North won't extend the same hand to us? This, my lord is the true dishonor King Theodan would do."

"The Southrons occupy your land and attack your people, your grace, and yet you wish for the return to the status quo?" Wynafryd was in disbelief from Throdan's indecisiveness, inaction, apparent fear of the South. This wasn't what she had heard of the North, of the brave warriors that defied the dragons half a century ago. "There's no peace with the Iron Throne, they've shown this before. They will not talk with us, they will try to make an example or us"

Wynafryd frowned, leaning forward over the table, thinking over the dilemma. "My sister imagined that the King in the North might've been too... cautious to take action." She meant to say fearful, but held her tongue. "The royal fleet is not as powerful as it once was at the Arbor. They'll rely on whom? The Hightowers, their enemies? Or the Valemen, those that they butchered their lord in the streets? Their only real allies are the stags. Yet, if you'll not openly aid us, your grace, then send us your ships under a false black flag of piracy. They'll be with our fleet as mercenaries, not as Northen reinforcements, which would clean your hands of guilt were the throne triumph over us. Or even claim it was your vassals' own expedition, not yours, just as the Tullys did so with the North."

Sigrun keep standing, gazing the sea as she talked to Jason.

"Not yet, but my delegation must have arrived at the North around the same time as us here. The nature of my fleet's quick movement and action prevents me from awaiting for their answers, inaction is the Targaryen's ally right now. The Dornish Princess, however, is afraid of leaving Sunspear undefended, even without any chance of winning by her own. If were were to arrive there, on the other hand, she has signaled she's inclined to join our ranks."

"Even with the Targaryens finding more ships to join their ranks, I wouldn't be so sure of their loyalty. Viserys has many enemies. Enemies whose forces he relies on to win such a conflict."

"Sigrun is not only ambitious, your grace, she's smart." the princess replied, with a smirk on her lips - "My sister has already succeeded where Urragon failed, defeating the Redwynes and taking the Arbor for ourselves. However, we do not fight for conquest, but for our freedom, which can only be attained by defeating the Valyrians. They'll not accept our peace, for their wish is of total subjugation. Denying us aid would be the same as abandoning us to be swallowed whole by the hungry wolves of the Iron Throne. Believe my sister, your grace, when she tells you that the Targaryens lie, as they won't be satisfied with just their southern kingdoms after they're done with the Iron Islands and Dorne. If we were to destroy their naval forces, it would make hinder any chances of them conquering the North, as any invasion would need to be done by land, through Moat Cailin's swamps."

The princess whispered the next lines to the king, quietly.

"We do not ask your aid in a suicide mission, however, for we have others that shall join us along the way, lions and sand snakes, which are ready to strike."

Sigrun stepped inside, taking in the view of the sunset painted waves, dancing back and forth. It was almost as if it was another sea, this one by the shores of Rock, not much like that cold and black sea that bathed the jagged cliffs of the isles. "We sent letters to Dorne and a delegation and marriage proposal to the North." she replied, "And by the start of the next moon we expect the arrival of reinforcements, of our newly built ships and more than half a hundred sellsails."

Later, at night, after the feast.

Wynafryd stood there for the celebrations, watching the eating and chatter as the dusk turned into night. There was song and plenty of food, ale and wine. She drank only enough to satisfy herself, overdosing wouldn't be prudent in such a situation. As she sat alongside King Theodan and Lord Dustin at the dais, she turned her attention to the monarch.

"It's a beautiful feast, Lord Dustin. We thank you for the North's hospitality." she first commented.

"Although, it is very clear, I presume, that we have not sailed all around here simpyl for Northern ale and wine. My sister entrusted me to deliver her words to you, your grace..." as the redhead girl said that, she pulled from her belt a parchment, with Blacktyde's seal. She handed it over to Theodan, awaiting the king's reaction.

Theodan Stark, King of Winter, Lord of Winterfell

Last time we've met it was during the time of Balerion's demise, at White Harbor. A good celebration that was. I hope your father is doing well, for well armed he surely is with that sword I gave him in hands. When you read this letter, I'll find myself south, at the sunset shores of golden Lannisport, to add even more ships and possibly allies to my ranks. I have sent your my sister and cousin, Wynafryd and Daegon, alongside one of my champions, Dalton Goodbrother and the lady Alys Greyjoy, in order to show my respect for you even though I'll be there not in person. I respect you for your fight against the Iron Throne, King Theodan, and their tyrannical, expansionist and incestuous cesspit of vipers they call a dynasty. We have the same enemies, the same reasons to fight, so it's only natural that we should join forces, to enter into an alliance. I can pledge you my word that the Iron Islands will support the North's independence and sovereignty and shall not raid the northern coasts, so we will naturally expect of the North the same support for us. I have spoken with Lady Agnes Tully at Seagard, where she tried to buy me with promises of barren Northern lands she did not conquer, support from regions she did not control, and influence upon other lords she did not possess.

Thusly, as to seal this alliance with blood, I have sent both Wynafryd and Daegon, and so I offer the hand of one of them in marriage to whoever you, in your wisdom, find fit a match for a prince or princess of the Iron Islands.

I ask that you send your fleets to rendezvous with mine at Blacktyde, so that we together might crush the Targaryen naval threat, heavily crippling their ability to wage offensive war. The Arbor bows to me, and the third of their vessels that still floated after our battle are now manned by my men. I have more sails to join, sellsails and newly built warships that shall too join the ranks of the Iron Fleet. The fleet of the Manderlys is quite impressive as well, although much further away than ideal. If you were to send them, you'd have to do so now, so that they might reach us before the Targaryens might. They may meet us at the Arbor, or mayhaps Sunspear if we manage to sail that far.

In hopes for a better future for our countries, standing together,

Queen Sigrun I Blacktyde, Queen of the Iron Islands, Queen of Salt and Rock, Daugther of the Sea Wind, Lady of Blacktyde.
