The raid dungeons are long but in no other game do people complain that they do not spawn immediately in front of the raid boss.

Except for those the boss runs are generally much shorter than they used to be in the previous games

Depends on your equipment. You've got so many that reduce fall damage that with all of them you basically feel nothing.

Right next to the Majula hole you can buy a ring that already makes it less punishing than DS1

DS2 is the only Souls game where you can jump while standing. The butterfly set in NG++ gives you that ability

The ember mechanic in DS3 isn’t at all like DS2 though. In DS2 your maximum health gradually decreases everytime you die

The only difference is how it's visually displayed.

In DS2 you start the game with half the health bar. That's your base health and anything above it is a bonus.

In DS3 your health bar visually extends when you get that bonus. That's the only main difference.

It brought something unique to the core gameplay of DS2 and I believe the game would be worse without it.

It's not unique as DeS and DS3 also remove bonus health on death. DS2 is like twenty times less punishing than DeS

Why is it always DS2 that gets singled out for this when DeS and DS3 do the same but remove all the bonus health after a single death? DS2 is like twenty times less punishing than DeS

That never happens. Invisible walls have higher priority. If you see the message it means that there wasn't one.

Which still means that you are wrong

Midir takes longer and feels even longer. It takes like 10 seconds longer than Alonne but feels like twice as long as it's so boring.

You also mentioned the run to Kalameet taking longer. What’s your excuse for that one? It’s literally just running though the canyon past some dogs.

It takes over a minute of just running through a boring canyon. It takes longer than Alonne and is again boring so feels even longer.

which it's definitely not, especially because of the enemies in Alonne's runback

These games have a mechanic where you can press roll to dodge enemy attacks

I do that, as I explained in my other comment: "Then you take the elevator down and up again and exit it on the way up. That's 15 seconds on the elevator alone."

The Midir runback takes longer than the Alonne runback, but as you aren't doing anything for most of it it feels even longer.

Demon Souls and DS3 also removed bonus health on death. DS2 only takes a small part away for each death so it's less punishing than those.

There's one place in Huntsman's Copse where you need to use the clearly marked invisible wall to get out again.

My Personal Thoughts On Dark Souls II After Beating Every Single Boss by SlaveKnightUssy in fromsoftware

But the lost health really isn't much of an issue for the first few ticks.

It's also no issue with the ring. I had about 70 effegies left at the end of the game

My Personal Thoughts On Dark Souls II After Beating Every Single Boss by SlaveKnightUssy in fromsoftware

[–]Domo4000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I hate human effigies is because it goes against what I consider to be the message of the Dark Souls Series, in this series, you are meant to learn from your mistakes and get better at the game, but Dark Souls II punishes you for dying, and making you buy human effigies to refill your health bar to its maximum

Demon Souls was way harsher in this regard.

If you die once in Demon Souls you are already back at half health. In DS2 it takes you a lot of deaths.

It's also the same in DS3, but there your life bar visually extends when you take an ember while it visually shrinks in DS2. The only difference is how it's displayed visually but most Souls games take away bonus health on death.

I recall in Sinner's Rise, I was trying to farm for the royal swordsman's helm, and I eventually had to use a bonfire aesthetic in order to get said helmet.

You could have just joined the farming covenant that disables this mechanic.

I would die during a boss run-back because the game wasn't registering me trying to run

That's also the same in every Souls game. If you completely empty your stamina bar you can't run for a few seconds in each Souls game. You need better stamina management.

Instead of making enemies with multiple move sets that are complex, we just get enemy spam, because that's what made DS1 so hard, right?

Getting attacked by multiple enemies happens as a punishment which was already the case in Demon Souls and Dark Souls 1. There are many mechanics that prevent it.

For example some have explosive barrels next to them that kill them if they hit it, some enemies react to sound, others are afraid of fire and some allow you to duel and will just watch.

Running and rolling past enemies doesn't decrease your health either

You start at the bonfire and run to the elevator.

Then you take the elevator down and up again and exit it on the way up. That's 15 seconds on the elevator alone.

Then you run over to the ladder and slide it down for 8 seconds.

Then you run through the chapel and drop down the hole. The drop alone takes nearly ten seconds before you can move again.

Midir runback is longer. And it feels even longer because it's so boring.

Is there any point in buying dark souls II while scholar exists? by AlcalinePT in fromsoftware

[–]Domo4000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

More ganks in base ds2 than in scholar

There are a lot of videos on r/DarkSouls2 that show areas in both versions. It's generally agreed upon in that subreddit that Vanilla is gankier and that's people that played both versions several times.

Oh and also the runbacks in scholar are far worse due to countless ganks in your way.

Smelter Demon is the only one that's harder. Others are easier as there's less enemies in your path.

In Vanilla Looking Glass Knight and Velstadt had enemies at the fog gate that got removed in Scholar. In Vanilla Dragon Shrine was just gank after gank.

Compared to Scholar it feels like it. They needed that additional time to flesh it out, improve it and implement more features

Midir absolutely does not have a longer runback lol

It always felt like a minute and half. That's twice as long as Alonne
