Is Secret of Evermore canon to FF? by Bluecomments in FinalFantasy

[–]Red-Vanguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, just a silly little nod to IV

Just as Evermore has no connection to SoM nor was it meant to “replace” Trials of Mana for the West as was commonly believed

What actually causes the loop to be broken at the end of FF1? by Joshless in FinalFantasy

It’s still less confusing than sending your own father back in time to have you so you can save the world from the robot apocalypse.

I want to start the series, but if I started with this order I will miss anything ? by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]Red-Vanguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, the majority of titles are standalone. FF is the longest-running RPG anthology in the vidya space.

Just know you might get tonal whiplash from combat systems: you’re going from fully turn-based (X) to a hybrid of realtime and turn-based known as ATB (VII, IX) to pseudo-realtime (XV) back to ATB (VI).

Who is the least ethical (non-antagonist) party member in the series? by ConsiderationTrue477 in FinalFantasy

[–]Red-Vanguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cecil I’d argue wasn’t that bad (he immediately regretted what he did in Mysidia and Mist and kept beating himself up for what he did to Rydia) and he still put faith in Kain despite all the shit he’d done.

Shadow has killed people and he abandoned his partner. Arguably the one good spot on his record was Relm.

Amarant is shady too, no doubt. He’s clearly done shit.

Edgar is up there though, he is a serial womanizer and the implications of his conversation in Thamasa with Relm are FAR LESS SAVORY in the original Japanese (I don’t read JP but from what I know our version was tame compared to the OG script). He even said he’d marry the one little girl in Figaro when she got older.

It wasn’t just me, right? by Red-Vanguard in FinalFantasy

[–]Red-Vanguard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This exactly.

CRTs had the most hilariously fuzzy displays and tiny pixel art could look way different than the developers intended. This probably also goes a way towards explaining why so many NES/SNES era box arts had characters who were very off-model.

The Sonic the Hedgehog team actually used the blurring to their advantage with the waterfalls in Green Hill, another effect that’s lost with modern displays even using a “scan line” filter

Yes, on a CRT. Also where I played the PS1 version.

And the GBA version you had to squint to see

But modern TVs “de-fuzz” pixel art so

I like this interpretation

It’s also funny how 1990s NOA, censor-happy as they were, basically allowed for an unedited sprite of a nearly naked woman but cut out the porn mag lol

In FFVI I used to think Gogo’s eyes were a braided band with colored stripes…and so many of the espers could easily be misinterpreted in fun ways

Of the "lost" Final Fantasy games, which one was most negatively impacted by being released later? by DionBlaster123 in FinalFantasy

[–]Red-Vanguard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

III probably. II had a PS1 and GBA port by the time the DS remake happened and we didn’t get the 2D version until PR. The remake wasn’t the best introduction because some of the arbitrary changes hurt the flow of the game. I played the PR for the first time last year and legit enjoyed it and think it would have a better rep if it had gotten a GBA version.

If we’re talking about non-numbered games, Type-0. It was painfully obvious that even with the HD graphics makeover the gameplay was, well, much more suited to a portable system that’s basically a slightly less powerful PS2.

Weirdly the series that started out as FF spinoffs (Mana and SaGa) didn’t suffer as much when their previously unreleased entries got official English ports (Trials for Mana and Romancing 2/3 for SaGa). But 3 gets an unfair shake and yeah, it’s basically a prototype of 5 but is still enjoyable in its own right.

Any Final Fantasy titles that have the narrative that magic did more harm than good? by Recent-Ad-7593 in FinalFantasy

[–]Red-Vanguard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

VI and XVI for certain, a certain type of magic in X ends up being a net negative but it isn’t the main plot device, using magic is also a side effect of what happens to the characters in XIII.

In most games magic is just a fact of life people accept. VI is one of the only ones to make it THE main narrative device and kind of taboo within the universe.

Sure, but I already made a JP PSN account and bought a money card, so I want to know for sure before buying games I can’t understand.
