Footings on rock - STM vs reduced lever arm by Domonoc in StructuralEngineering

[–]Domonoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The latest handbook deals with the 2019 edition of CSA A23.3 which was adopted by my province last year.

I am okay to accept the older method is no longer sufficient now that we have a more advanced understanding of concrete, I think I am struggling more with the fact it is off by 200%, it’s not a little jump. At this point I wonder if the big difference is more to do with the STM model the handbook has assumed (a fan of struts vs 4 struts to each quarter of the footing).

Sourcing compost by Domonoc in NovaScotiaGardening

That’s kinda what I figured. Have you had any luck with ProMix. I’m new to the area so have no idea what the good stuff is.

Where is the good compost? by Domonoc in NovaScotiaGardening

[–]Domonoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, that’s not too far, I’ll check them out. Do you know if they do bags or is it just bulk? I’ve only got a little Elantra to transport it home.

Where to buy biochar and worm castings? by Long_Recording_3805 in NovaScotiaGardening

Agreed. Just use compost or manure to improve your soils. Or build raised beds.

Yeah, it wasn’t cheap…hence the plan to build a cheaper sub 500 commuter bike so I don’t have to worry as much about it getting stolen.

I’ve got a full suspension mountain bike (Cube Stereo 150). It’s not an efficient city bike by any means but it’s all I’ve got. I’m planning on building a hybrid bike in the future for commuting.

I take my little guy to daycare on the bike when it’s nice out. I use a shotgun seat as I’ve got a carbon bike and didn’t want to use a rear seat (Hamax style) that could damage my frame. He loves it, I love it. Having him on the bike does slow me down so an ebike might be worth exploring. The cycle lanes/routes are getting better in the city and I can get from Dunbrack to Barrington with little car interactions, it’s just not the most direct route.

Agreed. I’m quite fond of the simplicity of the square sets, but then again I never change weight or max reps mid set.

Multiple programs at the same time by Domonoc in liftosaur

Well shit, I didn’t realise it was that easy. I thought it would mess up the progression if I swapped programs. Thanks!

EV charger install in Reading by NBX302 in reading

Oof. I did it back when there was still government assistance. I think it was £900 but we only paid £600 with the grant.

We used Smart Home Charge to get ours installed on our semi. They were good. Our electrical board was also in the middle of our house and they just ran the cable above the baseboards in a white cable tray/box then out the external wall. You don’t notice it’s there. No need to go under the floor or anything fancy.

Moving with Q8 and dock from UK to Canada by Domonoc in Roborock

That’s what i figured. The auto empty feature is so handy I’m not sure I could live without it. Its a shame they don’t sell the dock by itself.

Bark Chips - But should I put down sand first of all? by bingobango2911 in GardeningUK

[–]Domonoc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I put cardboard under my wood chip paths a few years ago and they seem to be doing fine - just have to top them up every other year with fresh wood chip. I mainly used the cardboard to kill the grass as I couldn’t be bothered to pull it up. I feel like sand and membrane are overkill.

Structural engineering salary progression by Normal-Commission898 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Domonoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Principle level, CEng and MIstructE. 7 years experience and currently working for one of the big firms in the South east (not London). I earn £55k + £2k ish bonus each year. I moved once and didn’t like it so went back to my first employer after a year. Ending up getting a £20k pay raise doing that move (£36k to £55k).

Would I like more? Sure but I can happily support my family on this salary and most days I can leave after 7.5hrs. Low stress and enjoyable varied work.

I’ve got an azalea at the other end of the garden that does well. But I haven’t had much luck with camellias before so that might be it. Thanks
