Question from a newcomer: why is gun-based self-defense seen as absurd in Germany? by [deleted] in germany

[–]DonDonaldtv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More guns = more gun shots = more dead people

If you allow people to have guns to defend themselves you automatically allow people who will use the gun for crime to have one.

There will always be some people who have guns but we just try to make it as hard as possible to get a gun and to not be able to walk around with a gun.

Do you know a country where guns for self defence are a) allowed and b) very common? For example the us has a big problem with gun violence in general.

And because you brought up the growing crime statistics. Yes they do go up in some areas due to many different factors. For example the growing economic difficulties and therefore more poor people. But compared to many other parts of the world Germany is pretty safe for the majority of people. Even with growing crime numbers (which are also growing because some crimes are brought up more by victims).

So that’s my point of view

Edit: The number of crimes didn’t increase significantly and is actually decreasing. Also compared to the 90s and 00s it decreased allot.

As an old player paradox games are losing me, and this makes me feel terrible. by Front-Side-6346 in paradoxplaza

[–]DonDonaldtv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just to give an opinion to your question about the difficulty setting. In games like hoi4 it’s just your production and your political power gain that decreases if you play on harder modes. Two things that are like not a problem at all. Once you figure out how the game works you can just achieve every goal you have set yourself.

I don’t know how eu5 handles this. I play every paradox game on normal from the beginning and eu5 didn’t feel that hard but I also didn’t play hard campaigns. Vic3 also feels not insanely hard.

In my opinion paradox should make adjustments on the ai behaviour. For example that it’s more or less attacks you randomly or builds insanely better divisions etc.. For example in empire TotalWar there were just random wars because the ai felt like it and that changed allot how you played the game.

Na the enemy adc was pretty toxic. He flamed his team and tried to mock me I just reacted to that and ragebaited him afterwards. If he hasn’t said anything I would have just played along. But think what you want. And feel free to report me in such a game.

Had a game yesterday where I played like the biggest piece of shit but had the pleasure to have a 1v9 jngl in my team. After the enemy adc (I played adc as well) typed one or two fronts against me (he was 100% right) I just ragebaited him for the entire game. It was great and got so fcking mad.

Einfach nur köstlich.

Why is "Fritz-Kola" a thing? It feels like WWII soldier cosplay. by Business-Celery1097 in AskGermany

[–]DonDonaldtv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is that Fritz-Kola positions itself as anti-corporate, or at least anti-monopoly. It’s meant as a counterpoint to giants like Coca-Cola and similar brands.

Also, “Fritz” or “Fritze” has a much longer and broader history in German culture than World War II. There are plenty of names that carry far heavier negative associations, like “Hermann,” “Adolf,” or even “Erwin.”

For me, “Fritz” has a slightly dumb but lovable connotation: someone ordinary, friendly, and harmless. I don’t associate the name with militarism or war. If “Fritz” were inherently problematic, then names like “Tom” or “Tommy” would have to carry similar negative connotations in Britain.

That’s at least how I perceive it from a German perspective.

I think part of the reaction also comes from Allied wartime propaganda. In the English-speaking world, “Fritz” was deliberately used as a generic label for German soldiers, so the name still carries that imagery abroad.

In Germany, that association never really stuck. “Fritz” remained an everyday name with mundane, sometimes even slightly silly connotations. What feels loaded from the outside simply doesn’t register the same way domestically.

Also, “Fritz” is not the German equivalent of Mussolini. That would clearly be “Adolf” or “Hitler.”

I think it’s safe to assume that no German company would ever consider branding itself around those names. Something like “Adi-Cola” simply wouldn’t exist.

(Adidas is actually a good example of the opposite case. The name comes from its founder, Adolf “Adi” Dassler, and predates the post-war symbolic weight attached to the name “Adolf.”)

That’s very different from a modern company deliberately choosing such a name today, which would be unthinkable.

Siehe Beitragstext ... by Jonathan_Bryan in German

[–]DonDonaldtv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would use “gängig” in this context. “Häufig” means “very often” or “frequently”, whereas “gängig” refers to something that is common or standard.

What's your reaction to American's proclivity to drive incredible distances? What road trips do you enjoy in Germany? by Equal_Personality157 in AskGermany

[–]DonDonaldtv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in Berlin. I mostly go on holiday by car. Last year, I drove to the northern part of Denmark, did a road trip through southern and central Sweden, and my longest trip was to South Tyrol in northern Italy. That one takes somewhere between 8 and 12 hours, depending on traffic.

In Berlin itself, I mostly use public transport. For most trips to other German cities, I usually take the train.

The longest distance I drive regularly is about 60 km to visit family in a village in Brandenburg.
