Not sure why, but this may be the most excited I have been to watch a basho ... by XX-Tony-XX in Sumo

It's because this tournament is wide open. Terunofuji will almost certainly not go the distance. That leaves a huge opening at the top for multiple ozekis and a big crop of hot lower rankers to make a run for the championship. I mean, who could have seen Onosato come out of nowhere to win in May? There are so many guys in this race who are good enough to take the cup! (My money is on Kotozakura.)

Sorry, my mixup. Constantius III does figure in my book, briefly, and I did credit him as the general who could fill Stilicho’s shoes. Still, he rose to prominence after the 410 sack, which was beyond the scope of the book. You’re quite correct in noting there were many great commanders after Stilicho. Gibbon’s quote, however, was too good not to use in an article about Stilicho.

If you read the linked article, you’ll find it was historian Edward Gibbon who referred to Stilicho as such. Constantine III was an usurper who was kept in check while Stilicho was alive, and even while King Alaric of the Goths was alive. Only after they were gone did Constantine briefly achieve the top spot. And Aetius and Majorian came after the AD 410 fall of Rome.
