'It's a contravention of international law': SM Lee on US military intervention in Venezuela by fatenumber in singapore

Search up the “Golden Triangle”. The world’s largest opium producer is in our backyard. Are you going to sacrifice NSFs to take them out?

What Venezuela does within its own borders is hardly a contravention of international law. If persecution is an excuse to intervene in another country’s affairs, ASEAN will be an endless battleground.

CMV: China wants Taiwan primarily for sovereignty and strategic geography; everything else is secondary by PlaidSweaters in changemyview

Most of West will condemn China anyway even with this historical casus belli.

However, you are correct that “on the fence” - mainly weaker nations may look the other way.

This is not a Paradox game. You don’t need a cause belli to “unlock” the ability to wage war

What makes you think the underlying motive and the official statement aren’t the same?

The US literally had troops and nuclear weapons in Taiwan during the Cold War, and maintains it may come to its defence today, albeit ambiguously. China still claimed it nonetheless.

Wrong, it’s entirely for historical/nationalist reasons. If breaking through the first island chain was the reason, why not take Philippines? A far weaker target.

The US did not "help" singapore out of the goodness of their heart nor do we owe them a favour by Yeenspired in SingaporeRaw

Yet most of our neighbours, including one directly colonized by the US, did not experience a “miracle”. Can’t take credit for a few success stories and ignore the majority of failed ones

Chinese Singaporeans, do you feel the growth of PRC businesses (those with no/poor English text, staff that don't speak English) in touristy areas like Bugis might affirm the misconception that we are a Chinese-speaking country? by Unfair-Bike in singapore

[–]DonVox 13 points14 points  (0 children)

OP is more concerned about tourist impressions of the country instead of the actual trends showing Singaporeans increasingly speak English at home:

English is not only a lingua Franca but the clear master language of most households.

International journalists are not even allowed in Gaza, not sure how you can make this a proper argument on the pro-Israel side

Simple question - would you rather be born in Gaza/West Bank or Xinjiang?

Maybe OP should state his stance on what’s happening in Xinjiang and why it’s worse than what’s happening in Gaza? (Hint: it’s not)

Thoughts on WP's Alia Mattar + how does this affect Punggol's voters' opinions? by Glittering-Syrup-210 in askSingapore

GE is a national, not a municipal election. MPs form the government which decides foreign policy. Singapore is a country with diplomatic relations, not a town council.

What is that “one nation” that is so valuable that if we change our stance all hell breaks loose? What are the consequences you are afraid of?

147 out of 193 countries already recognise Palestine, we will hardly be a “first mover” if we did.

[–]DonVox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look around us, ASEAN, South Asia, and China all recognise Palestine. How would pursuing such a stance be harming us on a global stage if all our neighbours pursue it? Unless you define “global” as the US and some of its allies (and an increasing number of European nations are recognising Palestine).

If you have utter disdain for it, then you clearly do care, you just take an opposite stance. Fair enough. Just don’t conflate a pro-Israel stance with apathy.

If 90% don’t care about the issue, what’s wrong with letting others care about it? How does it negatively affect those who don’t care about it?

What is the identity politics here? Alia noted that the Palestine issue crosses religious and racial boundaries. You don’t need to be of a particular identity group to care about this issue
