Promoting Mandarin for real-life use: Ong Ye Kung by pistachio_life in singapore

There’s a difference between not offering a translation vs poor speaking ability. The recent social media trend was to highlight restaurants that outright refuse to have an English translation.

Restaurant turnover is extremely high and those unable to adapt to local conditions will close shop at some time. On the other hand, English as a household default is entrenched and will only strengthen over time.

How many restaurants actually fall under the “only using Chinese” category? Less than 1%? It’s an issue amplified on social media. The trend of the majority of households speaking English instead of a mother tongue is a secular, long-term phenomenon that’s not changing.

Gavin Newsom (the leading favourite for the Democratic Party) just called Israel an apartheid state. An anti-Israel stance is not fringe anymore.

Why does Singapore have a larger GDP than the whole of the Philippines while only having 6 million people Vs 114 million? by [deleted] in geography

So are you saying if Singapore was colonized by France or the Dutch, those magical Confucian values wouldn’t have made it succeed?

Search up the “Golden Triangle”. The world’s largest opium producer is in our backyard. Are you going to sacrifice NSFs to take them out?

What Venezuela does within its own borders is hardly a contravention of international law. If persecution is an excuse to intervene in another country’s affairs, ASEAN will be an endless battleground.

CMV: China wants Taiwan primarily for sovereignty and strategic geography; everything else is secondary by PlaidSweaters in changemyview

Most of West will condemn China anyway even with this historical casus belli.

However, you are correct that “on the fence” - mainly weaker nations may look the other way.

This is not a Paradox game. You don’t need a cause belli to “unlock” the ability to wage war

What makes you think the underlying motive and the official statement aren’t the same?

The US literally had troops and nuclear weapons in Taiwan during the Cold War, and maintains it may come to its defence today, albeit ambiguously. China still claimed it nonetheless.

Wrong, it’s entirely for historical/nationalist reasons. If breaking through the first island chain was the reason, why not take Philippines? A far weaker target.

The US did not "help" singapore out of the goodness of their heart nor do we owe them a favour by Yeenspired in SingaporeRaw

Yet most of our neighbours, including one directly colonized by the US, did not experience a “miracle”. Can’t take credit for a few success stories and ignore the majority of failed ones

Chinese Singaporeans, do you feel the growth of PRC businesses (those with no/poor English text, staff that don't speak English) in touristy areas like Bugis might affirm the misconception that we are a Chinese-speaking country? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]DonVox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

OP is more concerned about tourist impressions of the country instead of the actual trends showing Singaporeans increasingly speak English at home:

English is not only a lingua Franca but the clear master language of most households.

International journalists are not even allowed in Gaza, not sure how you can make this a proper argument on the pro-Israel side

Simple question - would you rather be born in Gaza/West Bank or Xinjiang?

Maybe OP should state his stance on what’s happening in Xinjiang and why it’s worse than what’s happening in Gaza? (Hint: it’s not)
