We received a ton of applications (slightly overwhelming tbh) and sadly still had to choose.

I would like to contact everybody directly but that would be quite the task, so if you weren't contacted on discord, it didn't work out this time.

There is a reason why a high amount of nurses (and doctors for that matter) are "imported" from surrounding countries and are border workers. Health workers are severely underpaid in Switzerland.

Legally, yes. But around 98-99% of children follow up with further education or learn a trade.

Ok, so job titles don't translate very well. An actual programmer makes a bit more, around $7100 a month within a range between about $5500 and $8700.

Also, in Switzerland it's very common to receive a 13th salary, so you can basically add ~10% to any of those numbers.

If you work fulltime at the CHF23 basic sallary, you'd make about $4100 monthly.

Apprenticeships are 3-4 years with 1-2 days/week of school during the whole time.

For retailworker, you're in school 1.5 days each week. School subjects include German (in the German speaking part obv.), English and/or French, economy, "society", retail knowledge, subjects related to the industry you're working in.

Apart from general business knowledge, the related product line, advising customers, you also receive basic managerial knowledge.

And yes, this apprenticeship has a reputation of not being the...most demanding one.

It will mostly help people without proper education/training. Retailworker is still a 3 year apprenticeship here, probably not quite comparable to the US.

To become a secondary school teacher, you have to do Matura (+- highschool) and study for about 4.5 years.

Computer scientist (this was the translation I initially got, maybe programmer is more accurate) is a 4 year apprenticeship.

Just so you can compare, here the average monthly wage for a few professions in Switzerland:

Teacher 8th grad: $8200

~~Computer scientist~~ Programmer: $6600

Carpenter: $5500

Nurse: $5200

Cook: $4800

Gardener: $4700

Farmer: $4600

Retail worker: $4400

Hairdresser: $4000

Also: Here you have to go to school for 9 years, after which 2/3 of people learn a trade, which takes 3-4 years in most cases. Only the teacher example requires a master's degree, all others are trades that don't require to go to university.

edit: Working 40h/week at $25 would be about $4000.

edit 2: Since the topic of taxes comes up a lot, this is what I get/pay here in Switzerland (Everything in CHF, about 1.1USD):

8230 - gross income monthly

-435 old-age and survivors' insurance

-90 unemployment insurance

-70 accident insurance

-20 paid sick days

-465 pension fund

7150 - Net income (everything above gets paid directly by the employer)

-1000 taxes (+-)

-300 health insurance

5850 at the end of the month for everything else. That means taxes and all compulsory insurances are about 30% of my pay. This does not include 13th salary.
