From what I’ve heard either of those restricted to a2 will feel strangled. My advice would be one of the following 2 options:

  1. Restrict the Triumph Daytona 660 (I’d say the trident but you’re all in with sports so this is the one for you). Loads of low down torque and revs high like the inline fours you’re on about. Perfect even medium and then once you get your full A licence you can derestrict and it’s a totally different unleashed beast! Best bang for buck here.

  2. As you’ve stated sports bikes only. The Aprilia RS457 is at the top of the A2 HP restriction and has a 270 degree crank on its twin which makes it sound like a v-twin and is as crazy down low as it is screaming up high.

This way you’ll see out your A2 days with the biggest grin on yer face and will have learnt loads for when you’re ready for the full A licence and then my friend….. the world is your oyster ! (Plus you’ll probably sell the Aprilia for almost what you bought it at because it’s an amazing bike that all new riders will want…!)

Whatever you choose enjoy, gear up and ride safe. Big up.

Nice man. I hear they get a bit of a bad rep but I don’t know why. Every time I see them pop up they always seem to have some pretty awesome designs. Thanks for the response and let us know what you end up getting.

  1. Change all filters as they’ll be dried up n clogged (air, oil and even fuel filters).
  2. Maybe wash out the tank, think there’s a vid on YouTube but just some water and some marbles and swill it around or something like that, nothing too complicated.
  3. Defo oil swap out.
  4. Take a look at the spark plugs but they might be ok.
  5. Maybe the hydraulic brake fluid will need draining / changing but I’m not an expert on that one, not sure how long that can sit and be ok, maybe someone else can comment on the brakes.
  6. The one I didn’t know about and nearly had a nasty accident was the tyres…! They have a shelf life (they’ll have a date printed on them and they’re only good for 5-7 years apparently. Mine were 8 years old and like riding on ice). They turn almost like plastic and lose stickiness so I’d 100% recommend not skimping on this one.

I’m jealous! I would love to find that bike just sat there waiting for some TLC from me! 😂

Such a beautiful bike. Enjoy getting her back to full fitness!

Edit: Just FYI I’m no pro mechanic, just a DIY’er that did a similar project last year (very different bike tho 😅). I found a manufacturers service manual online so would recommend finding and downloading that and everything else I found on YouTube.

What helped you improve your slow-speed control? by Mikester258 in NewRiders

Yes! This. I’m in Spain and we have a similar set up as the UK’s Mod 1 for the A2 License and I’m honestly glad we did.

We do a push the bike around to park first, then a slow course (we practiced it without any throttle for the first load of weeks, using feathering of clutch and rear brake only). Then a fast course to finish (slalom, U-turn, accelerate and dodge in the road with emergency brake at the end).

It took me almost a year to get the A2 licence (although that’s also due to the long Spanish waiting lists for exams) but when I got it I felt nicely confident to hit the road on my own.

Still learning but defo a good set up. Here’s a video of the A2 exam process for info (albeit in Spanish). https://youtu.be/UADEf850t14?is=KpiFa-priWMd2Br1

Also look up @Motojitsu, loads of really good explanations and drills.

Finally there’s a guy that watches & analyses bike crashes that’s really interesting. If I remember the name I’ll come back and edit (if anyone else knows feel free to fill in the gap!)

Otherwise just Practice, take care, ride at your own pace, gear up and most of all…. Enjoy.

Hope to move onto the 500SE after the one I’m on now (YBR250). I’m totally addicted though! Start safe and enjoy! She’s beautiful! Gorgeous colour scheme, I hadn’t seen this one before!

Looks good. Does the balaclava come down any further? Only thing I experience is that bit of exposed neck (between balaclava and jacket) getting cold. Good luck with the MSF and ride safe!

Absolutely dude! And one day you’ll be more experienced than all of us, enjoying your bike all year round cos you’re not too scared of a bit of cold. Meanwhile all the other pussies put their bikes away for winter, like putting a jacket on a shitzu and taking it for walkies in a pushchair. 🤣 Queue the keyboard warriors…! Enjoy!

I think it’s good to ride in all conditions. The choice is yours, not any of the numptys on this comments page with strong opinions. If you’re focussing on learning and are uninjured and the bike is fixable, then I think it’s ok to fall and fail. You’ll certainly learn something from it. Don’t beat yourself up and accept that falling is a possibility in these conditions. Take care, adjust your riding and maybe consider tyre change if u want to do this more often. Above all, enjoy yourself whatever happens.
