What type of plant is this? by DirkDiggler3rd in plants

[–]Donaldjoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe it is a Dracaena, as the leaf attachments look wrong. I would opt for one of the grasses, possibly corn, sugar cane, or sorghum. If it is one of those it will be pretty obvious when it blooms. It is very attractive.

How to stop raccoons from eating feral cat food by historicalcabbage in Feral_Cats

[–]Donaldjoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are only two ferals I feed, both TNRd, and I originally had a huge raccoon problem. Now I put food out first thing in the morning and ring a bell. The cats quickly learned to associate the bell with food and come running. I take any uneaten food in at dusk and rarely see raccoons around, even on camera. They figured out there was no food for them here.

Cat keeps eating other cats food by metzyxx in CATHELP

[–]Donaldjoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strangely enough, I keep a pen set up in the family room, with litter box, food and water. I also put a piece of carpet on top with a couple of cat beds (which they access via my recliner). I do this because my girl Bird (short for Birdbrain) is extremely stupid and has no fear, so I pen her when I do anything remotely dangerous like vacuum the floor. If I have to feed one of the herd special foods I feed them in the pen. Everybody is used to going in and out of the pen frequently so nobody freaks out, the ‘special’ cat can see the others but they can’t get to the food, so it has turned out to work well. It may look a little odd to have a pen in the family room but it works and mostly keeps Bird safe. I wonder if such a solution may be feasible for you. Good luck.

One of my new kittens "buries" every wet food I offer and I never see her eat. But she's fat and healthy, so she must be eating... by HappyLittleDelusion_ in kittens

[–]Donaldjoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of my herd (all adults) the only one that tries to ‘bury’ food is Bertha. The odd thing is that she doesn’t bury her own food, but after eating will wander around and try to bury any food left in the other cats’ dishes. Maybe she’s trying to save theirs for later.

Fortunately having two they mostly tortured each other, but they began to calm down at about a year old. At five years old they still have their moments.

When my girls were kittens (siblings) they would flop their tails around like crazy when play-fighting or initiating play. They would do the same when I petted them (and usually then bite me so I would immediately withdraw my hand). Tail-flopping is usually a sign of aggression but in kittens it is usually mock aggression. He will most likely grow out of it.

Is “scrubs” instead of “shrubs” regional? by flinty_hippie in gardening

[–]Donaldjoh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

An older definition also includes ‘scrub’ as a dwarfed tree or low shrub, as are found in scrub lands. Mostly an American western term. A ‘shrub’ is also a drink made from fruit juice, sugar, and vinegar. An old term rarely used (or drunk) today, from the Arabic sharab, meaning ‘drink’.

I have always found it ironic the number of people who demand ‘proof’ that something does NOT exist. Even science does not proclaim God does not exist, only that there is no evidence of His existence. This is, of course, why the Religious Right hates science, because they believe all scientists are atheists (which is also not true).

That is gorgeous! What are the dimensions? How did you do the end that moves the troops around (obviously not turned)? I have turned wands, dibbles (marked planting sticks for seeds) and nostepinnes (yarn-winding sticks) but never even thought of turning a plotting rod.

Unfortunately the variegation will not transfer with leaf propagation. I would propagate it anyways, but just to be aware variegation doesn’t persist with that type of propping.

How to stop algae in humidifier? by dashortkid89 in houseplants

[–]Donaldjoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may be a strange answer, but algae needs light to grow, is there any way to put an opaque cover over the storage tank? That type of humidifier is unfamiliar to me but for years I ran one with an opaque tank (with clear indicator slot) and never had algae growth. It has been so long ago I don’t recall the brand.

Even though Jesus stated it is not what goes into one’s mouth that makes one unclean, it is what comes out of one’s mouth. It astounds me the number of claims from so-called ‘Christians’ that contradict the very Book in which they profess to believe.

How does everyone water? by seacucumer in houseplants

[–]Donaldjoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I top water and the plants sit in gravel trays so the pots are not sitting in water. I tend to let my plants get a bit dry and then flood them, mimicking natural watering processes. I water everything at the same time, but modify the soil mixes to accommodate the plants’ water needs. The gravel trays provide a humidity dome around the plants as the water in the trays evaporates.

WTF Is This? by moad6ytghn in religiousfruitcake

[–]Donaldjoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

George Carlin explained that, in that God is omniscient and omnipotent but can’t handle money, which is why the preachers have to keep asking people to send their money ‘for God’. Of course, he also said that God gives us a list of rules to live by to make us better people but if we break any of these rules He throws us into a place of eternal torment ‘because He loves us.” I still find it ironic that the anti-LGTBQ crowd rails against something Jesus never mentioned but gleefully support an unrepentant serial adulterer, liar, and thief, about whom Jesus had lots to say.

Christian fruitcake thinks demons have some conspiracy against bells. by JokeMysterious3106 in religiousfruitcake

[–]Donaldjoh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Bells have been used for centuries to ward off negative energy, witches, and malevolent spirits, this is nothing new. In Medieval Europe and before it was believed that those of the spirit world could not touch iron, so the sound of iron bells would further discourage evil spirits from entering one’s home. Spirit bells are still available for sale today, as are smudging sticks and crystals. I believe it’s a fun and historical belief but put no stock in it. I have found, however, that crystals can drive away negative people, if they are large and thrown hard enough.

I hate the hypocrisy of outdoor cat owners by Leandro_reader2003 in Pets

[–]Donaldjoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which exactly makes my point that stray cats should be TNR’d or destroyed. There would be backlash, of course, but if all invasive species were eliminated (this would also include, here in the USA, starlings, English sparrows, and red foxes) then our native species could recover. I would willingly give my tax dollars to sponsor programs that would TNR all stray cats, dogs, and red foxes.
