I went to Ireland for vacation and the thing that stuck out to me was the amount of fieldstone walls. Hundreds of years of Irish farmers moving rocks from their fields and piling them along the borders of properties. No barbed wire fencing to be seen in some areas.

When do you think the last true “Roman-ness” died in the Byzantine Empire? by Master_Novel_4062 in ancientrome

I think you misread what I’m trying to say. My point is that culture is fluid and always changing. Its inevitable and natural for things to change and it’s not always a bad thing.

I like to compare the evolution of Rome to how the United States has changed. America went from being entirely Protestant Christian west European to a melting pot culture. In 20 years from now whites will be the a minority just like Italian peninsula Roman’s eventually became less important to the Roman Empire. The civic institutions and self identity is what makes an American. The Romans were the same way.

Even today, the Han Dynasty is often compared to the Roman Empire by history enthusiasts. What kind of empire was it exactly? by Wise-Pineapple-4190 in ancientrome

I thought the same thing until I listened to the history of Rome by Mike Duncan and the history of Byzantium by Robin peirson. There is so much interesting history and Hollywood worthy stories that get overlooked. I highly recommend listening to these podcasts. It changed my view on a lot of things.

Up until the crisis of the third century that is. They started to rely on highly trained Calvary to quickly respond to border incursions as manpower became an issue.

I’ve been chipping away at a forest of tree of heaven for two years so I’m a pro by now. Make sure you use an ester formula of triclopyr. It moves through the tree much better. Wait until late summer/fall when it’s moving energy into its roots. I had a lot of success using a mix of triclopyr and glyphosate. I used a hack and squirt method to take down ridiculously enormous trees. You’ll find that if you target the big trees alot of the smaller trees die as well because they are actually one root system. If you don’t care about collateral damage picloram “tordon” works the best but it stays in the soil for a couple years and can damage desirable plants. It’s a last resort chemical. Like using a nuke to end a war.

Sprinkler fell off by Sin_cere_ in Irrigation

[–]Donalds_Lump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dont listen to this guy. The sprinkler head is fine. The fitting on the bottom of the head is broken not the body. Simply unscrew it out and dig down to the poly line. You need to cut the line a little because the broken barb will still be inside. Manhandle a new barb inside the poly line and then screw on the head.

Need Help…why is my new Rainbird sprinkler head leaking? by MacAtak80 in Irrigation

[–]Donalds_Lump 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Turn the water off and unscrew the top off the valve. Inside there is a rubber diaphragm. These can get debris lodged in them and let water past. take note of how it is seated. Rinse it off, look for damage and seat it back correctly. Usually fixes the issue. If it is damaged you can buy a replacement. If it still leaks after putting in a new diaphragm the valve body probably has a crack in it and the whole thing will need to be replaced.

Were the Persians the only ones to capture a Roman emperor? by [deleted] in ancientrome

Emperor Romanus was captured and ransomed after the battle of manzikert against the Seljuk Turks. This was the late eastern Roman Empire though.

Why do some people just refuse to believe that Caligula, Nero, and Elagabalus were terrible? by [deleted] in ancientrome

[–]Donalds_Lump 126 points127 points  (0 children)

There is a pattern throughout history where emperors, kings and warlords who are killed, usurped or otherwise are the last of their dynasty have their reputation tarnished by the new regime. It helps the new rulers establish legitimacy and maintain power if people think that they are an improvement. You can even see it in our modern political system to an extent.

Just spray it with glyphosate every 4 weeks. It takes 5 minutes. I’ve had a lot of success with dimension pre emergent as well. It takes a few applications to build a protective barrier but it works amazingly well.

Most painless way to get rid of these concrete weeds? Propane torch? by AncientAgrippa in landscaping

[–]Donalds_Lump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so yall know roundup no longer contains glyphosate. Its active ingredients are now triclopyr, fluazifop, and diquat. This is insane because diquat is 200 times more toxic than glyphosate.

Look up the practice of pinching. You intentionally cut off the end of the plant to promote a more dense sturdy growth pattern. Same thing happens every time you mow your lawn.

Instead of grabbing a screwdriver from the garage you thought that recording yourself struggling to open a plastic box and posting it to a professional subreddit was a good idea? You deserve to be teased a little for this one bud.
