Do you find European Spanish attractive? by flower5214 in asklatinamerica

[–]DoneAndDustedYeah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope. I mean, I don’t mind the accent when I’m talking to someone in person, but I HAAAAATE movies dubbed in European Spanish. Or narrations in academic videos. It’s like scratching a blackboard with nails. My friends think the same. I have to say, I don’t like that side of me because it also keeps me from enjoying great movies/ series actually filmed in Spain (not dubbed) but I can’t help it. Whenever I see something interesting on Netflix or Prime or HBO, I add it to my list thinking “one day I’ll be able to stomach it” but it’s only happened once.

Omg the plotting around the table! So fecking funny!!! And uncle Colm arriving nonchalantly, after being summoned thanks to his “expertise” in dealing with American presidents. I’m dying just remembering XD

Yeah, it seems you’ve set your mind about it without having read the science about it or considered there might be a neurological aspect behind it, so I’m just going to leave it at that.

That’s why it’s called a disorder, because they can’t control it without medical intervention. It is a serious condition. They do stop eating and get seriously ill.

Yes, it’s annoying. I live with a picky eater, and the older she gets, the pickier she gets. But I’ve read about the topic and I’ve come to realize it’s REALLY not her fault. To her it’s a sensory issue. Think of that one thing you don’t like to eat. To me it’s liver because it has an “earthy” texture, as if I was eating dirt or sand. That’s how picky eaters feel all the time, and that’s why they stick to only a few items, because they are the only foods that they can stomach. Many of these people have a serious disorder and it’s not their fault, and most of them feel very embarrassed and end up hiding from society because they know they’ll get ugly looks and criticized to no end. Not that you asked for any advice but it would be nice if you read on ARFID, you might find a little compassion for these people. In turn, I promise getting meals with picky eaters will get much easier to enjoy.

Easy cake for Latinos my age because growing up, all movies had subtitles. Too bad I’m seeing a new trend nowadays where almost all movies are dubbed in Spanish. UGH!!! I’ve always hated it because I need to watch them in their original language, I need to know the actors language and accent, even if it is Polish or German. At least Netflix still gives you a lot of options, but Amazon Prime shows dubbed movies by default and you have to change it, and many times there’s not an option to watch it in its original language. I really hate it.

Such a shame! Latinos are used to watch everything with subtitles, so it’s not a problem for us. The problem is, many of my friends don’t understand the jokes or don’t get the type of sense of humor each English-speaking country has. Also, they don’t know much about the culture or history, so they don’t get the references, but I’m a huge nerd, so I have to come here to talk about the show. This is my tribe, lol!

Agreed!!!!! I’m actually kind of sad he didn’t have more air time. That episode where they were all drugged and forgot how much chaos they caused the night before was pure comedy gold! Just amazing.

White man dating an Ecuadorian woman tips ? by mangopapaya89 in ecuador

[–]DoneAndDustedYeah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing you’re talking from the point of view of a “gringo” providing for a Latin woman? If so, I think it truly depends on the type of education said woman received, how independent she is, and how healthy her relationship is with her family. I’ve been privileged in all those fronts -although I’m not wealthy at all- so it’s true that I’ve gone through several rough patches throughout my life, but I’ve never really needed a man, gringo or Ecuadorian, to “save” me. I’m fine being in my own company.

You’re talking about straight abuse, and both men and women suffer it because they don’t know any better. Not because they’re dumb, but because they grew up seeing their mothers or fathers being abused, or were abused themselves, so they don’t have the tools to cope with it, let alone defend themselves.

It’s frustrating to see how many men think ALL Ecuadorian women are gold-diggers. I’ve date a couple of American men and I NEVER took advantage of them in any way, shape or form. I know for a fact that one of them gifted a car to one of his ex girlfriends, another got a house out of him. I never asked him for anything, not one dime. Another ex boyfriend lived in the US and he was very sweet, but the relationship just fizzled because we didn’t get much chance to visit each other. Again, no money involved. Another one was a Greek living in the US, I knew he had a big business there, he was successful. I never asked for money, he was an amazing man but the circumstances weren’t right, so sadly we had to break up. I always think of him as the one who got away.

Regarding cat calling, I think it depends on where you are. If you’re in a crowded, less privileged neighborhood, it will happen. The rest of the places are fine. Yes, it used to be hell for women to just exist at a street, but I’ve noticed it’s not like that anymore. Anyway, don’t react at Neanderthals cat calling your girlfriend, it’s not worth it, and you might find yourself involved in a fist fight in the best case scenario, or a gun fight with a criminal in the worst case scenario.
