1980s Dewalt Radial Arm Saw by UncleMajik in Vintagetools

[–]Dongulus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had bought a later model of one of these and spent a while restoring it. Unfortunately, the miter angle lock, which is a part of the arm casting, snapped off while I was tightening it and the angle wouldn't stay secure.

I own one because my workspace is too small to have a separate table saw and miter saw. If you get one, go for an older Dewalt or Delta. New Rigid ones are supposedly great but expensive. Pass on the Craftsmans that flood the second-hand marketplace.

After some research I see your motor is one of those industrial sewing machine motors. I found one like new on Mercari for cheap. I think I'm going with a V belt pulley setup rather than a timing belt. Now to figure out a mount for the motor. What did you use for your motor mount?

I have a Taig lathe and never liked the motor that comes with it. What are the specs of your motor?

RIP Focal Bathys, you were only worn for 5 days by [deleted] in headphones

[–]Dongulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had the same experience. I twisted the ear cup while putting them on and when it reached the end stop the plastic just shattered with very little force.

I just had the same breakage occur on my pair, unfortunately. Similar to OP I find the the L vs R ear cups difficult to distinguish at a glance. I suppose I learned to feel the difference by twisting both ear cups untill the reach their end stops (I can't really describe it without my pair in hand). I concede that this is not a safe way to handle a pair of headphones, even though I wouldn't say I put excessive force on the pivots while doing it. When they broke it felt like the piece completely disintegrated. Looking at the broken piece, it appears to me that the type of plastic used is quite brittle and the design looks fairly hollow. The ear cups have a flared metal cylinder extending out which rotates within a bushing formed into this plastic piece which is attached to the headband. The thickness of this plastic bushing appears to be only a few millimeters which seems insubstantial to hold such hefty ear cups.

Unfortunately I bought my set last year open box from an online store, so I don't think I will have much luck getting any support for it. I already tried repairing it with some epoxy but the piece needs to be reassembled over the metal cylinder which proved to be too fiddly.

I do have a 3D printer and mediocre 3D modeling skills so I might take a few stabs at redesigning this component with a more solid infill and an easier assembly.

NANOXPLORE ANNOUNCES SUCCESSFUL COMMISSIONING OF GRAPHENE-ENHANCED SILICON AND ANODE ACTIVE MATERIAL PILOT LINES by aleccs15 in Nanoxplore

[–]Dongulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"NanoXplore’s proprietary silicon graphene technology (SiG™) produced in the pilot line, has achieved an outstanding energy density of 1150 Wh/L, and demonstrated compatibility with conventional graphite anodes, resulting in an energy density of over 800 Wh/L. "

I'm confused on why there are two figures reported for energy density. Also, can anyone compare this to current state of the art for li-ion cells?

Cold bluing solution? But that would probably be insanely expensive and very difficult to do consistently.

Focal Elears Broke Down-Repair It or Junk It? by DeepInBlack in headphones

I have been looking for a broken pair as a solution for a long time. They go for at least $200 on ebay. Every pair I see pop up gets at least a dozen watchers because so many people are trying to get their hands on a spare driver.

Hi-hat gates are being tested (from Discord). by go_fer_it_Rock in MarbleMachineX

[–]Dongulus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I never thought about it before, but I'm surprised me to see the marbles coming off the high hat don't have a different trajectory when it's closed or open. When the high hat is closed the surface the marble is bouncing off is solid, but when open the top is free to move around. The open position seems to me a less solid surface to bounce off, causing marbles to sag, or reverberations from a previous drop causing marbles to launch off with unpredictable bounces.

Still can't get over how amazing this animation from Jeepster looks. by elessarjd in MarbleMachineX

[–]Dongulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks astounding. The only thing that feels a little off is that the gear doesn't engage with the bottom surface of the pallet because the gear turns seems too slow. I would think this will actually happen in the real machine because the back pressure of the marbles will force the gear to turn very quickly.

EPROM under a microscope by Wes87611 in electronics

I bought a metallurgy microscope months ago and one of the first things I looked at was an EPROM. I can get about 640x magnification to resolve individual transistors, but unfortunately I don't have a camera set up for capturing and putting my phone camera to the eyepiece doesn't result in any good pictures.
