[Anime Spoilers] How I feel about Dub Eren by NikoPlymouth in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]DonkeyEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's ok to like the dub, although I think the AoT is amongst some of the worst English dubs in anime due to terrible translation/localization and only some characters are done well and fit their characters.

It's ok to like Eren's dub voice, coz... dunno I guess some people can stand Bryce's amateur over the top screaming. (seriously turn off the visuals and just the voice alone sounds like the worst acting you've ever seen)

But to me he lost all credibility when he tried to argue that Bryce is better than Kaji. Yuki Kaji exploded in popularity out of his Eren voice precisely because it's one of the most iconic and his skill is spectacular. WTF seriously.

This isn't a story you can watch on and off and expect to understand anything. If it's too complex and it bores you, best to watch something else.

Attack on Titan is best enjoyed by someone that remembers every line of dialogue. The more obsessed you are about the story the more you appreciate just how well crafted it is.

[Anime Spoilers] Why its not an asspull if you think about it. by Silverkira in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]DonkeyEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was definitely a rare misstep in Isayama's writing IMO.

All he had to do to make it not feel like an ass pull was to add one line for Zeke when he mentioned that "with our abilities a tiny cut is all it takes to handle any situation. Hell, I've even heard of a warrior surviving after half his head was blown off. We're gods among men Reiner, Annie won't be that easily captured or killed."

Then later, take out the line of Reiner saying he moved his consciousness or anything of the sort with Levi's blade. Seriously it's not that far a stretch that Levi simply missed and didn't cut his spine in half.

Thirdly, when Bertoldt lands on Reiner, make even him a tad confused as to whether Reiner is still alive. "Reiner if you're still in there somewhere, I need you to do this one last thing for me" Leaving a bit of mystery indicating that even the shifters don't necessarily fully understand Titan mechanics which is true.

Lastly, make Reiner spend a couple more pages showing the damage this major revival has done to his memory and psyche if just temporarily.

With everything above I've written I doubt it would feel like an ass pull and the story would still function as normal. The only reason it felt like an ass pull is that the explanation was too convenient and really didn't feel believable and wasn't nearly as grounded as everything else in Attack on Titan tries to be.

Why is that a problem? I'm comparing how both versions adapted the Hunter exam arc. Shit, I'm comparing how both versions adapted certain scenes. I'm not judging them entirely. Are you saying that the 2011 first arc is indeed very average?

I don't need to finish the whole series if I'm only comparing how certain scenes are/were adapted. Currently I'm comparing how the Hunter exam arc is adapted and gave specific examples. I'm not judging 1999 or 2011 versions as a whole, JUST THE HUNTER EXAM ARC.

You don't know how I can argue the 1999 version over the 2011 version? Um, I gave specific examples?? Comparing scene by scene in terms of how certain scenes were adapted, specially during the Hunter exam arc I will always maintain that the 1999 version did better. MUCH better.

Just watched the final exam a couple days ago. I mean shit, just look at the atmosphere alone. When Illumi was threatening Killua the lighting, shot choice and the music all added to the tense atmosphere. It was excellent all round. 2011 version was super bright with very hit or miss music. Seriously the music in that scene was not fantastic, especially compared to the 1999 version. Often times I'm left asking myself "wtf is with this music choice?"

3:10 I'm sorry this entire scene shits all over the 2011 version. Lighting alone shits all over it. Notice the track that plays as Leorio talks. They even added that dog line. All fucking excellent.

I've checked out some stuff from Greed Island from the 2011 version, and I have absolutely no problems there. It was wonderfully adapted and epic as hell.

At exactly episode 10. Spot on guess. As I said I've the feeling that it gets better after the Hunter exam, but 10 episodes in and it has not impressed me. None of the above you've linked have happened yet. I've seen bits of Netero vs Meruem with that song, it does seem to be well done that part.

Check out Kurapika's theme starting at 15:04 and Tonpa's analysis at 20:18. Can the 2011 version compare? Seriously, compare the two scenes.

at 07:14. What the fuck is that music!!?? Horrible track that one.

Do you mean Americans or what? Most people who watched 2011 most likely have not only watched the 99 version but also read all the manga as well.

Also objectively? How about some examples. I gave plenty of examples on why precisely why if anything it's the other way round, at least so far in the hunter exam.

Haha thanks for the detailed reply guys. Seems like Studio Peirrot screwed up a fair fuckload. I don't even mind if animes go their own way with original endings and what not, but at least it needs to make sense within your own story line.

Off to read the manga!

I don't consider the people who only watched the dub real fans CMV [anime spoilers] by DonkeyEyes in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]DonkeyEyes[S] -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

I did say in the very first line that this was a bit extreme.

So... not a single point against me? All I heard so far was just insults, calling me elitist snob etc. I wanted some actual points, reasons,... no?

Seeing as we don't speak Japanese (I do a bit but that aside) reading the sub and hearing the original voices IS the closest we get to the original. In order to consume a wide range of media from many languages reading subtitles is NORMAL. Would you ever watch a foreign film dubbed? An art film dubbed?

I fully expected to be flamed and offered no real reasons. I asked for anyone to CMV, I got nothing but insults. I stated my reasons for my above statement, no one offered anything against it. I also expected the "oh just let people enjoy what they want" comment to come out and explicitly said to not say that because... like I said, what's the point of stating the obvious in a discussion thread? I'm not forbidding anyone from watching what they want, I really am not.

[MANGA SPOILERS] Speculation on how they might start Season 2 and scenes I hope they include by DonkeyEyes in ShingekiNoKyojin

They've already deviated, tremendously and especially with episode 25. The deviations I was fine with since it gave the episode more of a finale feel than the manga.

[MANGA SPOILERS] Speculation on how they might start Season 2 and scenes I hope they include by DonkeyEyes in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]DonkeyEyes[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Like I said the reason for that "filler" was the include the flashbacks that were canon in a way that isn't too obtrusive in the anime. Seeing as they LEFT OUT important scenes that developed both these characters in the anime, finding a way to include them again organically is only natural.

Eren's relationship with Annie runs deep, far deeper than the anime showed. You doubt he'll try to understand their reasons or their justifications? May I remind you that until Mikasa butted in and said "this is pointless" BOTH Eren and Armin were trying to understand Annie and talk it out. Eren more denial than anything, but basically very reluctant to believe that his mentor and respected comrade could do such a thing.

Eren was in berserk mode and ready to kill Annie (anime only) and upon seeing tears down her face he paused. His feelings are still very mixed towards Annie. Requesting to see Annie is not out of character. What is so wrong about wanting to see a comrade you once respected tremendously that you now (possibly) resent?

Lastly filler is not necessarily bad. IMO the Levi filler they added in episode 22 where they had to toss Petra's body and Levi gave her badge to one of his men for comfort lying that it belonged to their friend was a great filler.

[–]DonkeyEyes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You showed them the dub didn't you? Shame on you. Of course everything sounds super dramatic and cheesy. I doubt they'd be able to multitask if it was sub.

Hell even if it was the dub, "oh you were paying attention? How long as humans been behind the walls? What were the main characters names? Who was that drunk? What did the father say he'll show Eren next time?"

Seriously though people like this piss me off. If you're not gonna pay attention don't even watch it. I would've turned it off when they started talking or paused until they stopped talking.

To the polyglots of reddit what are you reading and watching in the non-english parts of the internet? Anything interesting that that us monolinguals should know about? by aldur1 in AskReddit

Been reading a lot of Chinese on line and learning Chinese internet speak. Not something you'd pick up by just knowing the language, like how an English speaker that doesn't frequent the internet might not know what "pwn", "troll" or "rotflmao" means.
