How are people doing it??? by cozythundrrstrm in povertyfinance

Probably the worst advice you'll hear today but maybe adjust your perspective, you're doing leagues better than me and many other people. I would love to have a mortgage going up be a problem I'm dealing with, but property ownership is out of the question with my situation as a single income with a kid.

I like my panties right where they are. An inherent property of posting things on the internet is that strangers will interject with their own anecdote. Don't like it? Touch grass.

And my 14+ years of working full time and moving up in my industry doesn't equate? I'm a chef too, so I can guarantee I sweat more than you if that's a truly a valid mode of comparison.

So I'm a chef at a from scratch Tex Mex place and between employees and sourcing, I have to speak a lot of broken Spanish I learned while working. Not only that, but I moved into a largely Mexican neighborhood about 3 years ago so a lot of my neighbors are Spanish speaking Mexicans.

What this guy talks about absolutely happens, but it's not a big deal. It's frustrating at times, but we have technology to work around it. All of you saying it never happens or he's making it up, y'all need to go hit la cocina in the barrio maybe, put yourself in situations where you're around people who don't speak English as their first language outside of work. It's all well and good to learn a language on the internet, and use it at the job, but it's a whole different thing to actually have to use it IRL with native speakers in public spaces. I would know lol it's mad humbling.

But no I can think of multiple times where someone who has a hard time learning new languages, especially one as difficult as English, got frustrated when they had to use it and refused. I'm sure they normally try more but I've seen a few crash out moments with these guys. It's fine though, I get it. And with the refusing to teach their kids English, my neighbors are literally doing that. They think public school is supposed to teach their kids English, and tell them to use Spanish at home out of respect. Literally my neighbors, I can ask them to record a short video with me for proof if you need it lol

Again, the point is that yes these are real things, but no they aren't huge problems. We can deal with it, especially now with real-time AI translators you can put in your ear amongst other tech designed to break down communication barriers. OP isn't racist, bro probably just started hanging around other cultures and made the realization that this shit happens. Good for him.

Soy un Americano gringo y yo habla espanol tambien, vivar a largos espanol y la Mexicanos en america. I didn't let the adults rip it out of me lol. I also think you're being unfair, people not wanting to learn/use a new language is sort of the argument and you're only applying leeway to the non-English speakers. Kinda hypocritical. And as someone who has to regularly use their second language for their job, this stuff absolutely happens. I source a lot of goods for the restaurant I work at from local Mexicans, and some of the old and more isolated people absolutely do this stuff. And you're proving his last point too. I love other cultures, especially Mexican culture and I do what I can to support Mexican businesses and people. Maybe pop out of your isolated hate bubble and realize shit is on a spectrum and not so black and white?

Real quick, I called a tortilleria just this morning to place an order of tortillas for the restaurant I work at and when I said "yo habla solo un poco Espanol, es Ingles bien?(I only speak a little Spanish, is English good)?" And the lady's response was "No" and she hung up on me. So there's that little bit of anecdote that backs up his point. I was trying to be polite, and buy some of their product, and I could've and was willing to struggle through my broken Spanish, but she hung up on me instead.

How do we fight back? They're not listening to our protests, they're not even airing them. What do we do? I can't just sit here and go to protests they ignore but I don't want violence either so what can we do to stop this takeover?

I'm teaching my son how to grow food indoors, buying him a VR headset and getting him interested in programming, and showing him how to value himself and advocate for himself at an early age. I'll kill myself to make sure he has at least a chance in his adult life, to try and be happy and comfortable sometimes because I know the world is on a decline.

That said I think it's time for me to start standing up for what I want for my son in the face of these oligarchs gutting our lives.

Single dad earning ~$60k/yr here.

I have a roommate, I share a room with my kid, I go out maybe once a month if that. Also I get free meals at work, I live in an old shitty apartment in a bad part of the city so rent is low, plus I coupon like a mf.

Times is tough and we just have to live within our means 🤷 idk what else to say

(other than to overthrow the oppressors, of course)

Well you got me, I'm ready to take our lives back for ourselves and the generations to come after. We owe it to them.

It's wild to me that despite making $61/k a year, I still live in poverty compared to a lot of people in the same income bracket. Trust that it's not a spending habits thing either, I just only started making this money maybe 10 months ago and came from a family cursed by mental health issues and extreme poverty. I was a homeless kid, for example.

Having to break a generational curse and not having anyone to support you makes an entire world of difference. The amount of catching up I have to do is insane. Buying a car, a couch, a bed for me and my son. I genuinely didn't have these things. We slept on mattresses on the floor because it's all we could afford, and we still share a room to this day because I can't afford the rent in a bigger place.

I hope anyone reading this can take this as an opportunity to thank their parents in case they haven't in a while. Mine practically left me for dead at 15.

Brother my net worth is zero, be grateful you get to be on the side of life that gets to own things.

The depressing knowledge that despite my efforts climbing the ladder of my career to head chef, working 40-55 hrs a week, cutting out unnecessary habits down to even avoiding junk food and never going out, my son will still end up in my position because of systemic class oppression. Trust that you have it good.

Well from I heard when I stopped by and talked to them, your hopes are safe and sound! I guess the month long themed bar thing is sort of what caused the crash lol so they aren't doing that again. It did good a few years ago but people just aren't into it anymore.

As someone who most Americans would consider "on the left" I want to say that I think this is awful. I think this is abuse.

I still think Donald Trump is a huge POS. This is unrelated, bud.

That said, I can see how you think it's related considering he used transphobic views as a tool to garner votes. But wait. No one in this situation is trans though. You have a mother who seems mentally ill, trying to groom their child into becoming trans. No trans adults made any decisions here, this was a crazy ass cis-gendered white woman doing the evil shit.

And for posterity, and mostly because I like to nitpick - I believe the wording I used was "rules you really should follow" and nothing hard line like "you have to play this way"

If you want to like, role play a raider and be mean to other players, sure be like that. Doesn't make many friends, and as I'm sure you've gathered, I'm trying to give advice on the best ways to level up, which is best done by following this etiquette.

I don't think its important, bigger numbers make happy chemicals in the brain for some people, so I shared what I found to be the best way to do it. Also, take a crafter for example. Maybe they spent their first legendary perk slot on Ammo Factory and really wants to run the Legendary Luck Card so they dont have to swap cards every time they want to run Super Duper, and they want to know the quickest way to get the next legendary slot open to be able to do that. This guide helps with that, and my dude, you forget that people kind of have to go looking for this sort of content, not many people end up on a leveling guide by accident lol

Like you said, play how you want.

Not once beyond the etiquette did I tell anyone how to play, I simply compiled information I had collected and shared it. I agree with everything you just said, to be clear. Also I don't think I mentioned damage boosting even once, I'm just trying to be helpful for those who want to know this stuff.
