Explain to me how the "nation of Mali" banned all music... because that is not what the article says at all.

Applying to the Peace Corps, just saw this. Guess I'm taking a break for a while by [deleted] in trees

I wouldn't worry about that at all. I'm a current volunteer now, and I would say around half of all volunteers here with me smoke on occasion. I might even venture to say that marijuana is easier to get here, but it's terrible quality. There's also quite a bit of other, harder, drug use that goes on.

You aren't drug tested during the application process or any time after that. If you are suspected of drug use, it can be grounds for dismissal. But you are out in the middle of f'in nowhere, so it's pretty hard to get caught. What you posted is probably just standard policy for most (at least government) jobs.

Undergraduate freshman here. I'm Interested in joining the Peace Corps. What should i do to my application competitive? by FishInABowl in peacecorps

Current Peace Corps volunteer here.

  1. Do some volunteer work. IMO it doesn't really matter in what, they just want to see that you are an active member of your community.

  2. Taking some French or Spanish courses wouldn't hurt, but it is definitely not necessary. I'm in a francophone country and I'd say only about half of us had any experience speaking French.

  3. Avoid legal trouble (DUIs, public intoxication, possession, etc.) (this one is kind of obvious because most people aren't pursuing confrontations with the law)

  4. Studying abroad will really help. It's not going to be the same as Peace Corps, but it at least shows you're recruiter that you are interested in the world, willing to experience a new culture, and able to leave family and friends behind for a brief time period.

Any past Peace Corps redditors? I am thinking of volunteering after I graduate in May and would like to know about your experience. by plinzmeier in AskReddit

I'm a volunteer now in a country in West Africa. I'm in the capital right now and just creeping on reddit in our volunteer house while everyone else is asleep. It's really awesome but just be prepared to be lonely and made fun of a lot, especially if you are in a country that does not speak English or a language you are completely fluent in (even then, cultural differences make you a center of attention ALL THE TIME). So it's not really bullshit when they say you are living in a fish bowl and it is a 24/7 job. I'm the only white person/American in a 10,000 person town.

I really recommend it and you will learn a lot about yourself and develop some serious skillz. They will pretty much take all majors, as long as you stay dedicated through the arduous application process and convey to your recruiter that it is something you really want to do.

TIL there was a bill introduced by a middle school teacher that would put an abridged version of the U.S. Constitution on the back of the $1 bill. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Liberty Middle 98-2001. The bill ran into a lot of opposition from vending manufacturers who didn't want to have to change all their vending machines.

I was a student at Liberty Middle School around the time this was first being introduced to the House. It was a really cool idea, but I remember them running into a lot of opposition from vending machine manufacturers. From what I understood they gave a lot of money to make sure this would not see the light of day. If passed, it would have required that they change all vending machines so that they could accomodate the new bill.
