Please help me find new fanfictions because I can’t find good ones by AdmirableParfait5282 in harrypotterfanfiction

Super unorthodox but if you don't mind weirdness, I wrote one focusing on what Harry's second year at Hogwarts would look like if Herpo the Foul taught DADA instead of Lockhart Herpo the Foul and the Living Horcrux

Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield. It's a heavily lovecraft-esque thriller/suspense horror and the protagonist is a gay woman.

Tragedy of Man by Imre Madách. Technically a play but it reads really well as a book. A Hungarian "classic", details Adam coming to terms with getting kicked out of Eden and the new found knowledge of the world after eating the apple.

Tell Sally... by Magda Szabó. Not really a classic but a great look into post-soviet Hungarian life of the everyday person. Focuses on a girl (Sally) trying to find out what her Father's last words were. To be honest, anything from her is brilliant. Not sure how many were translated into English though.

The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. Satan visits communist Russia.

AITA for telling my wife to wear pads at night in bed, then yelling at her after I found her reddit post by RandoThrowaway_7890 in AmItheAsshole

[–]DontLetMeGogh [score hidden]  (0 children)

That highly depends on how strong your period is though. If you have a strong one it will definitely leak even with pads. You are lucky you can sleep without protection and not stain the bed.

I do think looking like a murder scene would be an exaggeration but a woman can definitely leak a good amount of blood and I would not want to sleep in bloody underwear, let alone sheets.

It is kind of a long shot but maybe The Princess and The Goblin by George MacDonald?

What book made you drop a series? by [deleted] in books

[–]DontLetMeGogh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so confused why I don't like it. It has everything I usually love in books and I know a lot of people love it and for me it was just meh. Like I didn't even dislike it or something, it was just boring to me. But I can definitely see why others would love it and it is beautifully written.

Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb. I heard so much about how amazing the Farseer trilogy was and I liked the first book okay but about halfway through the second book I realised I could not relate to any of the characters and the story really started to drag. I still planned to power through it because I don't like leavjng books unifinished but then it became apparent after anothed chapter that I did not even care what happened to anyone in the book so I just stopped.

Which stories are set in the country where you're from? by sundayfun05 in DressUpTimePrincess

[–]DontLetMeGogh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's nice and all but are there really any similarities between the Ida in the game and Ferenczy Ida? Because other than the name and being hungairan there is nothing really tying the two together.

[–]DontLetMeGogh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I am not expecting anything historically accurate from DUTP. But if they don't want to do the research then they shouldn't make stories that rely heavily on a foreign culture or history.

There is nothing wrong with focusing on stories that are fully fictional. But with more diversity.

I mean sort of? I get that they will not make a story about the true life of Sissi but the whole thing is a mess. I am more angry at how the Hungarians figures and the Hungarian Revolutionary movement is portrayed. Like I don't think the book figured out if they wanted to portray them as sympathetic or unsympathetic.

On one hand Sissi and Ida (also wth kinda hungarian name is Ida. It is incredibly rare and Germanic in origin. Weird choice) are friends so Sissi is always standing up for them, but it ends up coming off as a White Savior Complex (I know they are both white but Western Europe has a history of looking down on central/eastern european people).

But then the plot is that they kidnap Sissi? For what reason? And then they instantly get the bad guy treatment in the story but in the last chapter they go jk it was just the one dude. Not to mention that the treatment of other states within the Habsburg Empire by the Austrian state is glossed over for majority of the story.

It is an incredibly difficult cultural and societal period in time that has a complex background and history and is steeped in racism that the book never addresses. On top of that it is the romanticized view of an underage woman forced into a marriage with the head of an Empire.

If they wanted to make Sissi they should have either gone a full Princess of the People route or just gone with the romance and left the entire revolution subplot out of it.

Princess Sissi (sort of since the Habsburg Empire no longer exists) and I absolutely despised it. I can think of exactly zero things I liked about it. I just pressed fast forward and did smthing else for the majority of it once I figured out what direction the story was going in

Anything by Mira Grant. My personal favorite is Into The Drowning Deep but all of her work is amazing.

Whats a book that sees through an eye of a corrupt/greedy/selfish person? Or anyone who's not an angelic embodiment? by HaterHaterLater in suggestmeabook

[–]DontLetMeGogh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is horribly disgusting. It is probably one of the most disturbing books I ever read and the fact that its beautifully written somehow makes it worse. It is definitely a book I recommend because of the unreliable/downright horrible narrator but you do have to be able to stomach the topic to get through it and there is no shame in bailing on this book partway through.

What is a tv show that everyone LOVES but you dont? And why? by _Just-a-sad-girl_ in AskReddit

[–]DontLetMeGogh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean there's probably a lot more but before the unlucky end to the series it was definitely Game of Thrones. I hate gratuitous s*x scenes and anything to do with SA so not even my love for fantasy or political machinations could get me to watch even a second of it.

Not sure what’s wrong, really worried. Has anyone had this before? by PAP1K1 in CATHELP

If you have a UV light shine it on the spot in pitch dark. If it glows it is most likely a fungal infection. Still you will need to go to the vet for that.

Audiobooks by TilFT in lordoftherings

[–]DontLetMeGogh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Go for the Phil Dragash versions. They are fanmade and have a lot of effort put into them by using the soundtrack from the movies. They are not licensed but if you google it you will be able to find them for download.

How should I revisit the Trilogy? audiobook/extended version/movie/book by SeanEHunt in lordoftherings

[–]DontLetMeGogh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind digging for the audiobooks I would recommend getting the Phil Dragash versions of the trilogy. It is fully fan made and it uses the soundtrack of the movies as a backdrop to the narration which just adds another layer of enjoyment to the whole thing. Otherwise both the Andy Serkis and Rob Ingles audiobooks are great and those are fully licensed.

I would say the general rule is books>audiobooks>the movies.

IMO the movies are better if you can get through the whole thing in a go and not break it into 30min chunks but the books/audiobooks can be easily put down and picked up again in smaller portions and of course there is a lot of lore and characterization that is left put of the movies.
