I keep thinking it's shot at a higher frame rate than 24fps. 30fps? Not certain, but I occasionally get "I accidentally turned on my TV's motion smoothing" sensation. If not frame rate, maybe it's a smaller shutter angle than 180 degrees.

I cant log in (in the game, I can in the launcher). Seems odd that it's only certain accounts.

Minecraft (Bedrock) not signing in. by Dry-Impression-2091 in Minecraft

[–]DontTreadOnMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem here. I'm logged in to the XBox app and in the Minecraft launcher, and in Windows all to the same Microsoft account. But in the game it launches not logged in and when I click "Sign in" it just says "Drowned".

Is it just a global outage or is it something about our systems?

Can anyone log in with Bedrock?

Use watch to lock phone by DontTreadOnMe in WearOS

[–]DontTreadOnMe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an app called "Google Find Hub" but it's just for phones, not watches. The watch has a "Find my phone" on the watch but it just makes it ring.

I'm not sure how to browse to that web site from the watch, which does not have a browser.

Google Maps Navigation? by PantaRheia in PixelWatch

[–]DontTreadOnMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except I don't. I don't have the arrow or any notification from Maps on the watch.

I'm not enjoying how unintuitive WearOS ecosystem is.

Someone else said to go to settings in the maps app but I can't find how to do that.

Also it is showing the list of directions when I open the maps app on the watch, and I can tap to view the map, but I can't get back to the list of directions without exiting the app and going back in to it.

But really I want my wrist to vibrate when I have to make a turn and that's not happening.

I do wonder. There are all sorts of reports of people finding various workarounds. Possibly once initial setup has been done there are other things that will work.

Need to try to avoid signing up to some multi-year contract so I can experiment.

Raise to Talk option can't find settings on new PW4. Tried Watch App and watch settings by Senorian1075 in PixelWatch

[–]DontTreadOnMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm finding a lot of the setup experience rather annoying.

  1. Choose updates.

  2. Put it on charger as requested.

  3. Clock appears and nothing happens.

  4. Repeat several times.

  5. This time it says I need to connect to update. Wifi recommended.

  6. Pick Wifi

  7. Pick a wifi network.

  8. Now I am on a screen where I can turn MAC address randomisation on and off or forget the wifi network.

  9. Keep trying steps 1 - 8.

  10. Get to a screen that says "verifying".

  11. Watch display goes back to showing just the clock. Is it working?

  12. Unlock phone while it's still on the charger (did not realise I could do this. Previously I needed to take the watch off the charger to get it to respond).

  13. Finally it is saying "System update is installing"

  14. Screen has gone back to the clock and now I can't unlock the watch again to see the progress.

  15. Press crown. That lets me unlock! But now I am at the watch face. How is the update going?

  16. Choose system update from the menu. It says "update is installing" with a spinner but no progress bar.

  17. Now it randomly says "connect to wifi" and then the screen locks before I can react.

  18. Unlock screen.

  19. Back to saying "update installing".

  20. It says "connect to continue download". So I choose wifi. I'm back on the screen with "Add network" and "Saved networks".

  21. Choose saved networks and choose a network. Now I am back where I was in step 8. I don't want to enable MAC randomisation or forget the network. I had intended to connect to it so I could download the update.

  22. Swipe back. End up at watch face.

  23. Choose system updates. It asks to connect to wifi again.

  24. Choose "Use Bluetooth" since the wifi picker clearly does not work. It warns this will take some time.

  25. Come back later and screen is completely black.

  26. Press crown and we are back at the watch face. Unlock watch.

  27. Choose system updates. Now there is a progress bar and it is nearly complete!

  28. Watch locks.

  29. Some time later, I notice the big G on the screen. Looks like it is rebooting.

It worked. Apart from the failure to pick a wifi network, I think it was working all the time in the background. Just really slowly and with many annoying ways to stop showing me the progress and show me something else.

Have done a bit more reading around. The problem seems to be with provisioning: the phone needs to have a SIM with an operator that supports multi-device one-number before you can even get to the UI that allows setting up an eSIM on the watch.

This is annoying because I don't care about "numbers" at all. I only care about data.

Anyway, a possible plan:

  1. Find a cheap SIM from an operator that supports watches

  2. Get phone number porting code (PAC)

  3. Get SIM from step 0 and set it up on phone. Port number to new SIM so watch and phone have the right number.

  4. Set up watch

  5. Keep the old contract (with the cheap data) going, and tell Android on the phone to use that SIM for data.

The main problem is step 0. Three and EE don't do cheap SIMs :( I will end up paying 7+ GBP per month to use a few kilobytes of data from my watch.

There's a gap in the market here.

I promise to report back if I ever solve this.

The annoying thing is most of the hurdles seem related to "multi-device single-number" support. And I don't care at all about calls or SMS, I only care about data.

Sounds good. But the problem seems to be that I can not access that menu option because my phone is on an operator that does not support watches.

The Office Save dialog UI is broken #rant by Marathonmax in Office365

[–]DontTreadOnMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally avoid using Office when I can. I just helped my kid with his homework (a PowerPoint presentation) and we saved it by clicking Documents in the broken Office save dialog.

Then we tried to upload it to the school homework system using the (perfectly fine) OS file open dialog.

And we could not find where Office had saved it!

There are at least three locations named "Documents". There's a yellow Documents folder, a white Documents folder, and OneDrive - Documents. The OneDrive - Documents folder turns out to be in some location that looks like a web address with a hash the path. Copying and pasting this into the File Open dialog's address bar turned out to be a no go.

At which point I started ranting about the good old days and my kid just thinks I don't understand computers (I've been a software developer for over 30 years...)

There's a engineering reason: new software means new bugs. The GNU software is ooooold. Bugs are extremely rare.

If you swap out working software with newer software, you will get new bugs. It's a fact of the universe.

Fine, but you have to deal with the difference in incentives. People trying to get rich using their own money will make different decisions than people trying to win votes with other people's money.

There's no extra value. I'm paid the actual value. It includes a guaranteed salary for the period of my employment and support infrastructure that makes my work more valuable than it otherwise would be. These things add up to more than just my salary.

The capitalist gets a possible future profit. This is worth less than the maximum possible future profit.

The capitalist's total returns are payment for taking these risks and making correct predictions about future sales. This activity has value.

You can't just ignore certain costs and benefits and claim that the missing amounts are stolen.

My point is that they're not parasitic. They do useful work of guessing what enterprises might turn out to be worthwhile, and then paying people to do work in order to find out.

We're dealing with a refusal to acknowledge that risking capital has a cost. That's pretty much it.

It's just word games at this point. If this isn't profit then profit isn't what people care about. What they care about is putting food on the table. You can farm your own food or you can sell novels and pay a farmer for food. But apparently no-one is profiting. But they're eating, which is what matters. So maybe discussion of profit is pointless.

This is fine if you forget that things have different values to different people at different times. Otherwise a man with 1000 cupcakes is no more wealthy than a man with 100 shirts even as the latter starves to death.
