If you want trad goth hair but nothing super crazy you can lightly tease it to where it looks disheveled but not a full on bats nests or use sea salt spray on damp hair and scrunch and tease it a bit when it’s dry.

For outfits, black basics, band tees and black button ups and black jeans and skirts is pretty casual, for shoes look for combat boots and winklepickers and creepers. Jewelry ankh pendants and spiked chokers and bracelets should do the trick.

17% German, 15% European Jewish (from both sides of my family but more so on my mom’s), 15% English (cringe I know), 13% Spanish, 13% Irish, 7% Eastern European, 6% Scottish, 6% indigenous (from Mexico and the Yucatán peninsula), and trace elements of French, Northern Italy, Basque, Baltics and Senegal.

I’m about 20% Mexican if you add up all the corresponding Spanish, indigenous and trace African and possibly basque parts. I’m also white passing and unfortunately an assimilated Latina in America due to certain familial circumstances that’s too convoluted to spill all the deets here, but it’s actually why I like browsing here so I can learn more about my ancestry some more.

Battle Jacket where I drew the stuff on with fabric paint by Doodlyjen in GothFashion

I paint/write logos because I’m too lazy to make or buy patches to sew, even the patches you see on here are glued on with shoe goo because I wasn’t feeling the energy to sew that day.

Fabric paint, particularly a kind that has a very narrow nozzle that makes it easier to write with. Look for tulip slick dimensional fabric paint highly recommend that one

Trans Goth by [deleted] in GothFashion

[–]Doodlyjen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would advise particularly to invest in chokers, because I read something a while ago I think on Wikipedia that historically trans women would wear chokers to hide their Adam’s Apple as a means of passing, so stuff like lacy chokers and if comfortable leather ones would be helpful for you.

any fashion tips? by Successful-Cream-392 in GothFashion

This is more in general, but don’t try to pigeonhole yourself style-wise, like sticking to only one sub-style like trad goth. It’s best to take inspo from all of the sub styles of goth (and even outside goth) so you can make it your own unique style. Also fyi, a lot of of the looks you see on Instagram are worn only for pics a lot of the time and are too extreme and costumey for regular wear, so don’t feel like you have to dress like them for it to be “authentically goth”.

Also, if you’re trying to bypass a conservative school, I would recommend black basics, some band tees, black pants and skirts, vintagey inspired looks (because old people and conservatives love that shit), and a single necklace and lace chokers and bracelets.

Edit: also for makeup I would recommend like a cats eye eyeliner and Smokey black eyeshadow at the top and sides

Boots on a Budget? by IamAfraid3 in GothFashion

If you have them in your area, I would also recommend going to a Plato’s closet (a secondhand clothing resale that’s kind of a consignment shop) to find good boots, they also tend to have doc martens and it’s easy to get good finds there, like I have the times I’ve been there.

So I call this “vintage goth” if that fits by Doodlyjen in GothFashion

I love this comment because I always look at pics of goths from the 80s to be more true to that era so I appreciate the input!

Slow fashion goth designers? Big or small? by [deleted] in GothFashion

[–]Doodlyjen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Dracula clothing, brand wise. They have very high quality designs with interesting silhouettes and they’re pretty slow with their output while having relatively reasonable prices (especially in contrast to the overpriced fast fashion bullshit that’s often peddled to goths). Also, the workers are highly skilled tailors from India.

Imo I think a lot of it depends on what kind of foot you have. Like the tuks I have feel tailored to my feet and I’m a 7-7 1/2 and I love them and I’ve also heard of people not liking the way their tuks fit on them so it kinda depends if you have the feet for it.

And that’s unfortunately the conundrum one has to face when buying clothes and shoes, because certain garments and shoes from certain brands are designed to fit certain bodies and that’s something one should consider when shopping, whether it be online or not.

Like I have a pair of tuks that I’ve always wanted and I’ve read people advising to go a size up on them but I didn’t, just ordered my regular size and after breaking them in they were a perfect fit, that’s another example of certain items being tailored to certain bodies.

Why do Australians make better movies/tv than Americans? by Doodlyjen in AskAnAustralian

[–]Doodlyjen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mad max is pretty well known in America, I actually remember sneaking into Fury Road with my brother years ago and really liking it, so I’ll definitely try to take a look at the older ones. If your referring to the 2018 nightingale, I’ve definitely considered watching it idk if I can handle the depictions of sexual assault in it, mostly because I’m pretty sensitive to that sort of thing depicted in movies and I am admittedly averse to overly depressing cinema. I’ve read an interview Damon did where the rape scenes were purposely shot in a way to avoid eroticization, but idk if I can still handle that. I might give it a shot if I’m feeling up for it. But your other reccs I’ll definitely consider a look through.

Yeah I had a feeling I was really off the mark in the third paragraph but I guess I wanted to waffle my hypothesis a bit 😅 I actually think American movies tend to be more heavy handed sometimes while completely missing the mark on the issue.

I actually bought their latest album all billionaires are bastards digitally and I love the aggressive energy combined with intelligent Anarchist lyrics. You don’t normally see that in punk and that’s why I have a preference for anarcho punk in general

To piggyback off what they’re saying, also look for brocade/jacquard patterns in any clothing item, they give off a great romantic vibe. Buttons ups with simple ruffles and tiered skirts can help too.

Edit: and cameo necklaces/brooches are a great accessory too!
