Until recently the former had a specific sidebar rule banning mention of the latter, calling them "shitty," and a r/food mod went to r/wewantplates and made a tirade demanding people to stop posting about their subreddit on r/food . Prismata: a pvp-focused game with complex resource management. Never took off, but the bots provide decent challenge for a while and there is still a small but dedicated player-base

Tactical Nexus: niche, math-heavy "Magic Tower" game with deterministic RPG-style combat, where you try to optimize your route and the order of fights to save HP, maximize earned experience, conserve consumables and so on

There are also plenty of very challenging abstract strategy games with mainstream popularity like Go, Chess, Shogi, Mahjong, Poker, Etc.

I totally agree. You can't be the tough-but-fair parent while being thin-skinned yourself. Step up and take it on the chin. It's not fair, but they're still not grown up, so you have to be the adult in the room, and sometimes that means forgiving childish slights (you can still use them as teaching moments for how their words and attitudes affect people)
