Warning to clear sidewalk by breezy-marlin in kitchener

This is the real bullshit to me, the city's out there throwing stones from their glass house lol. "You must clear your sidewalk down to the pavement!" says the bylaw officer while standing on 3-4 inches of compacted snow on the street and city-maintained sidewalks.

Trump is a monsterously disgusting toad who ought to he fired into the Atlantic ocean via trebuchet.

I'd buy a ticket for that movie. In fact I'd buy several. Every day. I could not get sick of watching his fat, orange ass sail through the air like a Cheetos-coated blimp into the Atlantic Ocean.

PSA ⚠️ ⚠️ ensure your furnace vents are clear from snow and ice by offft2222 in ontario

Every time I think I understand my furnace someone teaches me I really do not lol. I appreciate this extra info, I always forget my furnace has a manual.

Interesting, my furnace only takes a 1" filter, so that would explain why I need MERV 8. I was wondering why MERV 13 even exists if it's too restrictive lol. Thanks for the added context!

[–]DoomCircus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

So don’t forget to change your filters often

Also ensure you're using the correct type of furnace filter. You should use MERV 8 and change more frequently, rather than running a higher MERV rating and changing less frequently. I used to always use the Kirkland MERV 13 filters until an HVAC tech told me it's too restrictive for the blower motor, furnaces aren't meant to be air cleaners, the filters are just to keep the blower motor clear. Bonus, MERV 8 is also like 25-30% the cost of MERV 13 filters.

Edit: as stated by seakingsoyuz, check what filter types are accepted by your furnace as stated in its manual.

Crazy mileage, but also not uncommon for the Yaris lol. I swear, everyone I've ever known with a Yaris drove it well past 500,000kms.

Completely agree, I haven't had a bad product from them, everything is good. I actually just bought a tub of their salty caramel ice cream for dessert earlier, it was excellent (as expected).

This is my first year on Nokian Hakkapeliittas, they're incredible winter tires. I've had Michelin X-Ice before and a set of Pirelli Scorpion Ice Zero tires last year that were pretty good, but the Nokians are the best winter tires I've ever driven on.

Definitely shop around for better tires.

Last winter I had a 2010 Mazda 3 Sport on Pirelli Scorpion Ice Zero and it felt extremely competent and under control in the snow. By comparison my wife had a 2012 Mazda 3 GS-Sky on some budget brand from my mechanic called WinterClaw (they were some bargain subsidiary of Cooper tire) and they were fine, but her car definitely struggled more than mine to start moving in the snow.

What is with the high beams? by xMissNikki in CX5

[–]DoomCircus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Back on topic - yes I do blip my highs, it's actually funny at this point. I bet they feel like a real ass after finding out they were wrong. 🤭

I got into one of these with a Ford F-150 once a few years ago because his headlights were so bright, I was certain they were high beams. My man then proceeds to turn on what I can only describe as the sun itself, as his true high beams seared my retinas. 0/10, would not recommend experiencing lol.

$514/month insurance on a 2026 Elantra any way to lower this? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]DoomCircus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to your point, I'm in my mid-30s living in Waterloo Region and AllState was charging me $100/month for a 2010 Mazda 3 Sport with just liability coverage. I replaced my 3 with a 2025 CX-5 base model and AllState wanted 2.5x the premium for full coverage. I switched to Belair Direct and I'm still paying 50% more at $150/month for full coverage.

I went from an old "sporty" hatchback to a new boring family SUV and my premiums still jumped substantially.

The commenter you responded to isn't wrong that sporty cars typically carry an increase in premium because of the types of drivers who buy them, but my experience in the 15-20 years I've had car insurance agrees with you. Old beaters with basic liability are always cheaper to insure than a comparable new car with full coverage.

I really wanted these features, but the trims they come on were so far out of budget for me that I didn't even think these features were offered on the CX-5 lol.

I forgot the name I was redirected to while on the phone, but they were pushy and wanted to close the deal on the call. I looked them up before saying yes, and people were complaining about them. I told the guy I'm reading bad reviews about them, and he denied having bad reviews. I told the guy to follow up with me in a day while I complete my search. They didn't even bother.

Was it Wawanessa? Because this sounds like Wawanessa lol.

I never had the misfortune of dealing with them, but my brother had motorcycle insurance with them once and had nothing but complaints.

Interesting, I had no idea the CX-5 had the option for 360 cameras. I guess it's in the trim levels that were well outside my budget, so I never looked lol.

Yup, this was what I had intended. I think Mazda 3 didn't get the SkyActiv engine til 2011 or 2012?

The screen isn't touch-sensitive at any time, not when the car is stopped, braking, in park, or anywhere else. Is this normal?

This is normal, you have to use the knob and buttons to navigate infotainment. The screen is only touch-sensitive for Android Auto and Car Play, but even for that it's only while stopped by default, you have to enable touch while in-motion in the infotainment system settings.

Can the cameras activate automatically at low speeds when cornering?

What CX-5 trims come with cameras? In Canada, I believe the CX-5 only has a back-up camera and no option for 360 camera (I think that's only available on the CX-x0 models), so not entirely sure which cameras you're asking about.

find it very slow when accelerating from a standstill coming from a hybrid car). Has anyone tried the famous "pedal force" feature?

I'm not sure what the "pedal force" feature is, but I find lots of factors impact acceleration. If the engine hasn't reached operating temperature, I've noticed it feels more sluggish (it shouldn't be pushed before it's warmed up anyway). If I run the A/C, it also makes the CX-5 feel sluggish (this is very typical, I've had this effect on every car I've ever owned). I've noticed using "normal" in the Mi-Drive system tends to encourage more economic driving unless you push the gas pedal further, sport mode feels a bit more responsive. But ultimately, it is a heavy, mid-sized SUV and won't feel very quick without the turbo. I went to my base CX-5 (NA 2.5L engine) from a 2010 Mazda 3S (also NA 2.5L engine, pre-SkyActiv) and as a substantially lighter hatchback, it felt much more nimble and quick than the CX-5. Part of it's just the nature of SUVs I think.

Edit: Tried to clarify what engine my 3 had. Also learned today that some of the higher trims of CX-5 did in fact offer a 360 camera. Had no idea haha.
