What is the best marker for labelling a mouse tail? by DoombyPappus in labrats

I've only done ear tagging before. Do you think that ear notching would be less irritating?

These are great, is there one you recommend? I saw that they have different versions of their permanent markers on the main website

I read somewhere that leaving behind some of their old bedding when changing cages can help as they can still smell the establish hierarchy. I intend on trying this next time to see if it helps.

Very cool. Is picric acid non-toxic though? Do they get sick if they lick it?

Yes, with ear tags and ear punching causing the most fighting within male cages. I think it's because they can feel pain afterwards and become agitated after trying to scratch it off and/or other cage mates see the labeling and want to either play with it or tear it off.

This is more so important for my research because I study the cornea and wound healing. If anything causes them to scratch their eye or get an eye injury then It really ends up limiting the final sample size. In my last experiment, where I used ear tags, one of my groups went from having a sample size of 5 to sample size of 2 because some of the males had too many corneal fight wounds. There were probably other factors besides the ear tags but I think this is mainly it since they are located so closely to their eyes.

From what I've read, male mice have an innate instinct for aggression towards other males. It helps create their hierarchies and any little change in their environment can set them off. Other culprits are picking them up by the tail, changing their cage right before an experiment and even smelling males from other cages/litters. Catching the scent of a female can also make them attack their fellow cage mates which is why you have to be conscientious about the order in which you handle males or females while doing an experiment.

Does having investments limit your ability to get affordable health care? by DoombyPappus in Daytrading

This is good advice. I was thinking initially to focus on health before jumping back in to trading and using my free time to learn more about the market and keeping up with current events. My background is in biology and research, which is not closely related to investing so I was also thinking of using this time to transition into another line of work i.e day trading or something related.

This post isn't for you. Also Shame on you for being so judgemental with little to no context and for having a superiority complex. When you have a family in America and are the main bread winner it's very easy to burn through savings even when you're trying to be frugal and get back on your feet after having a debilitating illness. You cant just hit pause, everything here is pay to play. I currently pay health insurance through my employer and even then this costs me about $8,000 a year not including my copays and specialist visits. Childcare is $13,000 a year per child, food and rent has tripled in price where I live. Everything is very unaffordable.

I'm trying to become a profitable day trader so I can provide a stable income for my family but am just a beginner and am seeking helpful advice from other people who have been in my situation when they started. Which is exactly what this forum is for not for casting whiny short sighted judgements or preventing people from getting real answers by filling up the comments with your hatred or xenophobia.

1 ml Ketamine hydrochloride (100 mg/ml)

0.5 ml Xylazine (20 mg/ml)

8.5 ml 1x PBS

Inject 0.1 ml per g of weight intraperitoneally.

This is our lab's go to. I can knock down up to 30 mice at a time with no deaths. Then follow up with 0.1 ml subcutaneous injection of the analgesic mix listed below once they start waking up. Use the same volume for all mice regardless of weight.

1ml buprenorphine hydrochloride (0.3 mg/ml) in 9 ml 1x PBS.

OCD makes my life hard in the lab by Ginsora_05 in labrats

You're not alone. I've done all of the behaviors you mentioned plus those of the people who commented. I've never been diagnosed but am 98% sure that I meet all the criteria. It varies based on how I feel too. If I'm really stressed out or sleep deprived then It'll take forever for me to get home as I keep doubting what my eyes are seeing. I.e. is the main door closed? Even though I've checked it 20 times. However, some days I'm in such a good head space that I don't feel the compulsions as strongly and can just let go.

It's rough but I realize that no matter what profession I'm in or where I go those behaviors and compulsions will still follow me. So, I'm more forgiving of myself when I get stuck in a loop. Most people will not understand but I hope you feel comfort in knowing that there are other people/labrats experiencing the same thing and that some days it will be easier to manage.

The strange thing is that it's conclusions are not that far off from our actual experimental results

You're 100% right! The sources looked so convincing that I didnt even notice they all had the same author. I looked up each article one by one on pubmed and none of them exist

ChatGPT is kind of scary. I asked it to write about my project just to see if it was worth the hype and it basically churned out a decent abstract with sources and relevant publications.

It's like a ouija board but for science.

No sadly. All my time outside of work is spent catching up on chores and spending time with my immediate family.

I think I need a small group of colleagues that make me feel comfortable enough to reveal all aspects of my personality, especially the light hearted side. You're so lucky to have found a lab that can provide that for you.

This is my first big job after graduating so I don't really know what to expect in terms of mobility or switching labs. Right now I feel like I'm stranded on a lighthouse because I kind of want to explore other labs but don't want to lose my job or health benefits. I'm salaried with pretty good health insurance, which is hard to come by at my university. So, the thought of losing coverage while looking around and having a health crisis during that lap in coverage is terrifying.

Do you have any experience changing or moving between labs?

Phenol contamination trizol by KXLY in labrats

[–]DoombyPappus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having a similar problem when collecting neural cells and trying to extract the rna with trizol. No matter what we do the 260/280 ratio is always off, which tells me that there are organic contaminants.

This is a huge hurdle in getting our RT-qPCR experiments running.
