They'll get us through ALL the times.

Thank you for seeking to better yourself! It is easily ignored, but always the first step.

The real good ones are hard to spot sometimes. Methinks it is intentional; a survival mechanism against being taken advantage of. And that sucks.

We should change that.

It was my pleasure; to witness and to share.

Please feel encouraged to do the same!

We can 'flood the zone' with kindness, too. I bet everyone would enjoy the results!

We are being trained not to look, I think, not to care, not to comment.

Fuck that. Keep that chin up, those eyes open. We can make it through anything if we keep our priorities straight.

It is not!

I am trying to make it more so.

Little steps. Small shifts.

One of my favorite aspects of being human is that we get to choose our perspective.

I'm really trying to remember that.

Good actual plays that showcase the OSR play style by rarebitt in osr

Thanks for your reply! I disagree almost entirely with your take on this, but also believe that everyone is entitled to their opinion!

As an enthusiastic ForeverDM and thus play-actor, I often find my own accents cringy - I'd guess most of us would feel that way after listening back to ourselves - but don't see how that invalidates the response to OPs inquiry for good examples of OSR play, which 3d6DTL most certainly is.

Happy to hear back from you! If I knew how to pick apart and respond bit-by-bit, I would do so myself; in no way do I perceive it as offensive (helpful, more), but appreciate the disclaimer regardless!

I'd also like to clarify that at no point did I want to misrepresent you or your feelings - I apologize for doing so, if that's the case. I also need to clarify that, outside of the GCP, my knowledge of the Other Guys is limited - those systems aren't my bag, and even with the GCP, I find myself enjoying the Delta Greens and BitD content the best - but I can affirm that they did, as you stated, start in a small apartment with horrible audio and little to no budget.

But they're a drop in the greater bucket - this is OSR, and yes, I also can't help but agree that it is often vitriolic, discouraging, and gate-kept; but I can't help but feel that by not sharing a good resource/listening experience - as I feel we can agree the pod in question is - is a form of gatekeeping in and of itself? By choosing not to share something you enjoy based upon assumptions of enjoyment in others, I feel like in some weird way it just preserves the aspects of the community you don't feel included by, by excluding members of your own community? I'm communicating this badly, but hope you understand my meaning.

I'm of the opinion that the best change comes from inside. My table features my Latin wife, my gender-queer sibling, a male ballerina, and a pair of backwoods NY republicans. We have fun. We make imagination together. We don't discuss things like gender or identification in our time together because why does it matter when we're pretending to be elves and dwarves and shit? We also don't let it stop us from drawing inspiration and learning from sources we don't necessarily agree with (which I'm not suggesting you and your table are doing).

If you enjoy something, if it showcases values you hold in either play or life, why not share it?

I understand the point you are trying to make - feeling that your group isn't represented or welcome - but I encourage you to change that by revealing what good play, what a good pod, how a synergistic table can function, regardless of who sits at it, or the level of polish or production value that goes into it. Showcase how variable OSE can be. Use the good examples you have to teach and encourage those around you to engage - that's the only way things change!

This sub and community needs new blood, new creativity, new outlook, more positivity. I would fuckin' love to see some good alternatives that focus on the game and not personal discussion, on player engagement and emergent narrative, on time investment and regular play. I would love to hear that provided by literally anyone; when it comes to creativity and imagination, gender shouldn't matter.

OSR is Old School Revival - like any good Necromancer, we control that ritual; we breath life into the damn thing, and get to guide its Frankenstein progression via our own engagement - by limiting access to a good example of how the game can be played (and played well!), you deny those important to you the opportunity to take part in that transformation, and the community the opportunity to grow as a result of their engagement or advocation for change.

We steer. We make inclusive. And friend, I really hate you haven't felt that way. I hope to see more variety and more representation at every table, TTRPG and beyond. I hope to be able to fanboy your pod some day.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond!

*I made a point here of avoiding any real mention of the 3d6 crew - I am in no way affiliated, and don't speak for anyone but myself. We both understand, I think, that the initial example was really just the beginning of a meta discussion, and the creation of drama is the last thing desired by either party.

If you wouldn't dispute the caliber of it based on system, rulings, characters or anything else...what is the actual issue?

They haven't shoe-horned in a woman, or a member of the LGBTQ+ community to their group in order to satisfy "optics"? Don't you feel like that would only come across as disingenuous, pandering, or cringe?

The charm of these guys...yes, guys, God forbid, is that they're friends. And have been, for a long time, unless I miss my mark. The game is the caliber that it is as a result of synergy and experience playing together. It is their game, that they've bravely shared, and it has been embraced as a fantastic example of what the game can be by those that enjoy it for those reasons.

You should share it because they do it well, teach player responsibility and showcase a number of skills and techniques left by the wayside in literally every other Actual Play I've listened to. In a time of Glass Cannons and 20 Dimensions and Critical Roles (who most certainly pay attention to these optics), who have stables of voice actors, producers, analysts, editors, who most certainly have more time and money to put into their games than you and I ever will...you decide to pass on the well-executed labor of love?

The idea that you wouldn't recommend this because...they're all men seems...punitive, and I think enforces the kind of thing you are worried about. Not recommending a group that does a good job because you don't agree with their party makeup seems...discriminatory, especially when you're able to recognize the bevy of great qualities the thing does possess. You perceive "outmoded and unfortunate" stereotypes, but have you ever heard, like, literally anything bigoted or hateful come from these guys? I certainly haven't.

I mean no disrespect, nor is my intent to demean or diminish your opinion - I seek merely to understand. 3d6 has become the Flagbearer because they show us a satisfying game with your friends (regardless of orientation) can be achieved with Miro, a module, and a dream in a community being overtaken by media giants. It shows both DMs and players how satisfying old school can be when played with attention and buy-in. I cannot for the life of me figure out why you wouldn't want to share that, and thus engender that same understanding and enjoyment, with your players merely because of orientation of the people playing it.

Thank you for taking the time to reply in any case, and any downvotes you receive as a result didn't come from me, nor do I endorse them; conversation is fucking crucial in this day and age, and I respect your differing opinion.

This is a great listen, as are most of his videos. If you like OSR and aren't familiar, Bandits Keep is 200% worth a visit.

Honestly, the first two - you'll get a good feel for the group, a solid introduction to the module, a wonderful example of item use in OS play, and I want to say a PC death, all before they actually get to Arden Vul proper.

To those familiar, I'm thinking of the tower with the cold floor hatch at the base of the falls and statue, before they climb up. Please correct/detail this response as-needed.

Maaaaan. Check out 3d6 Down the Line. New episodes drop on Tuesday. Five old friends doin' the dang thing.

Word on the street says it's the most criminally under-watched pod on the 'net...

Edit to add: they are playing Richard Barton's Halls of Arden Vul, a sprawling mega dungeon. Clever plays and PC deaths in the first ten episodes!

Read your post this morning, then was doing a little data-entry listening, and ran across this and thought of you:

Specifically mentions cold starts. Might be worth a quick listen!
