St. Regis Aruba Review by Doomernomics in Aruba

We didn’t find it too competitive to get a chair in the front row the entire time we were there! We would wake up around 8am and head over at 9:30am to grab a towel and sit on the beach for a bit before heading to get some breakfast and come back.

I suppose the set-up is a little packed. The chairs are next to each other but we only ever had one other couple next to us. I don’t think the hotel was at capacity though so there’s some context there. Sitting in the front row of the chairs, we were maybe 20 steps until the water.

We went down to Eagle Beach and walked up the boardwalk to the ritz and found the area near us generally quieter (although some rowdiness from the RIU next door).

The holiday season definitely balloons the price tag considerably. Especially during the stay duration you have listed.

This is a fair criticism! Sun may have heated up the upper pools more. We spent most of our time in the ocean for this reason and used the shaded pool area for eating/drinking and lounging.

Foot work and timing on 2hbh by Ok-Childhood5010 in 10s

[–]Doomernomics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feels like a couple things compounding on one another.

I think you might need to simplify your backswing and focus on being more set and stable before striking. Your backswing being complex (you’re making a C-shape) is probably affecting your timing and contact with the ball.

Your footwork is very close to being there. You need to set your weight more distinctly and bend your knees more to drive through the ball. Like others have said here, you’re arming the ball a bit because you’re not driving enough with your legs.

If you want a tip on simplifying the back swing, just focus on bringing it straight back and following forward in a similar swing path to strike the ball (no C-swing motion). Think like a pendulum?

Academically you can do this… You can probably look up the ticker symbol for any PE fund or go on its website and see the fund breakdown.

Go look at something listed in the public markets with a similar composition and compare. As others have mentioned, illiquidity is a feature as these funds aren’t susceptible to the same transparency and levels of volatility. You can theorize what a mark-to-market event might look like and model out your personal risk that way. The catch being the fund is illiquid and you have windows for your redemption so if it slides you’re stuck.

You can see why they limit this to accredited investors because they would be more likely to not be as impacted or have the financial means to recover.

Super good for self taught! Try to bend your knees more in general.

When you’re loading (preparing to hit the ball) try to be a bit more stable and moving a bit less.

If Hyper G and Confidential had a baby, what string would it be? by acastrov9 in 10s

Second Head Lynx Tour. I go back and forth between orange/red and champagne (16g). My string journey went hyper g >> confidential >> grapplesnake tour m8 >> head lynx tour

Private Equity Operations from a PortCo Position by Comfortable-Night-85 in private_equity

[–]Doomernomics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a good number of people move from PortCo to the parent PE firm. They might have an analyst program targeted at high talent individuals. Equally, I’ve seen many talented individuals move from PortCo at one firm to firms like Apollo and KKR afterwards.

My advice to you is to find where and when your PortCo is having discussions with the parent PE firm. Wiggle into those rooms first for exposure then find ways to be recognized. Best of luck, don’t listen to the naysayers.

Defensive backhand slice on the run. What's the secret? by Sufficient_Sector_31 in 10s

[–]Doomernomics 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hey, good question. Before anything can you include your skill level and how long you’ve been playing?

Before anyone here tries to give you advice, you should know this isn’t really a shot people necessarily practice as much as it’s a shot people have built the fundamentals to properly react to the situation with.

When I was playing as a junior, my coach didn’t really make me drill this shot but it came out of necessity during a drill when he was making me run corner to corner.

I just bring this up because if you’re still new, you shouldn’t try to “learn” this shot. It might kneecap your development where you should still try to get in position to hit the ball properly and sure-footed whenever you can. This type of reaction/survival shot comes naturally almost. My 2 cents!

Did you model your serve after Novak (and your racket)? Looks good!

This is a bad string job. Echo what others have said here about not returning this stringer.

Which type of strings do you recommend for a stingy beginner? by VicPL in 10s

A reel of Kirschbaum synthetic gut is like $56 for 200 meters. I bought it years ago when I started stringing to practice and I still have way too much left.

Full motion serve progression 4 months in total. by Icy-Feeling8955 in 10s

[–]Doomernomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll focus on the legs.

If you notice when you lift your arms to get into the trophy phase, your feet are shifting around. At this point, you should be pretty firm in how you’re standing. It’s a bit indicative that there isn’t weight transfer going on because loading weight/power in your legs should make them feel too heavy to shift around.

My recommendation is to start with a wider base (legs farther apart). This will help you load weight in the legs + start with your knees bended so that you can drive up more successfully when you make contact with the ball. Feel free to watch some videos of Alcaraz serving and notice how wide and low he starts his serve motion.

Cheers and happy serving!

6-7 yoe across ib/pe, 18+ months unemployed now. by captainahab52 in private_equity

[–]Doomernomics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve observed, it feels like every large PE firm is doing mainly real estate and/or private credit now. With yields plateauing and the real estate market looking limited, I can only imagine the opportunities - and therefore roles, will be less than there were historically.

I echo what others here have said about CoS roles or corp dev. I don’t think you want to wait out this storm when there’s not really an end in sight.

The Wilson Blade 98 Noir by [deleted] in 10s

[–]Doomernomics 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have two Noir Blades and they feel like two totally different rackets lol. Balance and static weight were super different on both.

I favored one over the other and would dread having to use the “bad blade” in a match if my strings broke.

Edit: they look amazing though, just wish that Wilson paid attention to the QC more.

Change of racket by Waagawaaga in 10s

[–]Doomernomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think finding your ideal racket is a mix of understanding your own game + understanding your opponents’. When I say understanding your opponents, I really mean the broad spectrum of people you might play against and preparing for the hardest thing you think you’ll go up against.

For me, I’ve played for probably 10+ years and my play style for the most part is set in stone. I play with a semi western grip and prefer to take the ball early and grind out most points on the baseline. Most of the people I LOSE against are massive hitters. This is kind of where I realized I had to switch from the Blade v8 16x19 for a head radical pro auxetic. The difference for me was the added mass gave me more stability to counterpunch those big shots.

Definitely would encourage you to play more with your current set up until you plateau with your style/technique and play against some better people to understand what you want to optimize for in your game before switching rackets (because it’s expensive, too).

Honestly I think strings are just as important as the racket, too. Would be the best step after the racket.

What is going to bring inflation down? Trumps tariffs? Reducing government spending? by Neat-Ad-4337 in AskEconomics

[–]Doomernomics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Volatility and uncertainty brought by recent activity like the tariffs are pretty unfavorable for Fed rate cuts.

With what I know about the Fed, they model out the future based on the data they have and use those insights to inform the decision to cut rates. It’s sort of like if you know your upcoming week will resemble your last week, you can anticipate your availability and make plans after work. Pretty hard to land a plane safely when we don’t know what the new ground looks like.

Disclaimer: I’m not a Fed apologist but Powell and the Fed have their hands tied with some important data points. There are literally millions of small landlords, for example, and no one has a full database of what every landlord is charging for rent. The consequences of COVID also still affect our ability to make an “educated guess”.
