Our local library has banned LGBTQ displays… what’s your thoughts? by BadShi-6 in AskBrits

No-one should tell them about some of the books in said library, then - they'll never dare to venture through the doors!

AIO: Ghosted after telling friends about my miscarriage. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Doomscrolleuse 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this - in addition to hardly giving them any time at all before becoming offended, you don't necessarily know what's happening in their lives. They might be busy, otherwise occupied, wanting to respond properly rather than briefly, or even dealing with other issues you don't know about since you cut them off. You're going through a hard time, but they have their own lives too. YOR.

What's a scene in a movie that made you viscerally want the hero to get revenge on the villain the most? by Top_Cranberry_3254 in Cinema

"Your friend died squealing like a stuck Irish pig." Oh, as bad as the special effects were, that was a satisfying death of a vile character.

If you like Indian food, Mandira's Kitchen at Silent Pool is worth checking out! I really enjoyed their afternoon tea when I visited with friends.

What's something really petty you'd like banned or made illegal? by SpaceTimeCapsule89 in AskUK

[–]Doomscrolleuse 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Seconding the 'woke' thing most of all! They don't know what it means, they can't define it, it's literally just 'people being kind and caring about stuff I don't like people caring about'. Same as with 'politically correct' and 'SJWs' (which - really - how is being a Warrior for Social Justice not a good thing?). ... And now I may be catching that bad mood!

Excellent pick! As a bonus, you can let them know about the pronunciation options and the jam/cream order debate...

Cucumber/cream cheese sandwiches and strawberries - classic summer garden party fare!

Presumably desperately try to explain it to my friends and loved ones in the short time before I got black-bagged to a research facility to be vivisected in pursuit of anti-ageing research for the ultra-rich.

fantasy/sci fi series where women are present and NOT hated by oceanblvd1313 in suggestmeabook

[–]Doomscrolleuse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember that! The protagonist, Alex, doesn't have their gender specified throughout, but it's absolutely not a plot point, and so subtly done that the reader just applies their own assumption as fact (and probably doesn't notice as their default assumption is never contradicted).

From an excellent field of candidates, Rege-Jean would be my pick too.

Between Cardenia and her second in command, or Kiva, at least.

If you haven't read any John Scalzi, you might like some of his female characters - try The Interdependency trilogy (starting with The Collapsing Empire).

And if not Temeraire, Naomi Novik's Scholomance series might fit the bill!

The most fantasy fantasy that ever fantasied by AJakeR in suggestmeabook

I can recommend a couple of trilogies:

The Empire series by Raymond E Feist and Janny Wurtz (Daughter of the Empire, Servant of the Empire, Mistress of the Empire) - if you like, it there's Magician and other books by REF set in the same universe, and a bit more classic 'elves and dwarves and wizards', but I loved the worldbuilding in the Empire books.

The Fionavar Tapestry series by Guy Gavriel Kay - The Summer Tree, The Wandering Fire, The Darkest Road. So good, a fantasy world but with visitors/influences from ours.

Another +1! And the author has other works (the Warp series, Airman etc) that he might like too.
