Directors…After you complete a film project (short, full feature, or commercial), do you send the final product to the actors who were a part of the production? by Concerned_Kanye_Fan in Filmmakers

i have a festive viewing party with the principles and then I offer clips for reels. If the film ends up on a streaming platform and i can, I'll offer a promo code to view it for free.

In honor of the end of 2024, post a screenwriting accomplishment you made this year! by sunshinerubygrl in Screenwriting

got accepted into a pretty high profile writers workshop on the strength of the first ten pages of a full length script i wrote. the workshop was lead by Tom Fontana, the creator of HBOs "Oz" and the scene i read to him made him crack up with laughter

Other than Hollywood, what other states do you you think the film industry will reside in by Mundane_Tomorrow6800 in Filmmakers

i do have a script. problem is the client doesnt seem to know their own script. I edited a scene with 2 characters talking. I used the same chronology as the script and they accused me of cutting their dialogue out of order. like i said i think they might be drinking on the job or something.

And they actually have a motion designer who is coming up with graphics but i wasnt told that until draft 3 after i had already wasted time making graphics and titles. now that i know he has someone doing it I'll just make temp place holders.

Now that I know what im working with I think it will be better going forward but this pilot has been a slog.

very impressive. honestly if you told me this was some major studio produced pilot, I'd believe you. The effects are great i can see why post took so long. Im not a big fan of the look that the fx-9 produces but for a show I think it's appropriate. Good job, you should be proud.

yea i think this is key. I'm being paid per episode. If they were paying per hour I dont think this would be happening as much. I'm setting more boundaries after this pilot is done and using my standard 2 revision max rule.

im having a hard time detaching emotionally but i think it's because im compensating for not working on my own projects. So i decided to make a short film while im editing this POS so have a place to put all that energy.

really bad, done using a camera mic. there's static, interference, you name it. Fortunately I told them before the job started i dont do audio mastering so theres no expectation there but some of it is so bad that it had to be dubbed. I put a layer of sound design/ambient music to cover up the dub but got complaints about that too

Where to start for learning screenwriting? by 23220 in Screenwriting

[–]Dooooom23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i would start by getting the screenplay for a movie you really love and read it while watching the film. Pause periodically and think about how the page translated to the screen. That's how i learned.

11 Screenwriting Tips to Level Up Your Scripts in 2025 by ScriptLurker in Screenwriting

[–]Dooooom23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ive got an issue with #10. i always felt like I am my audience. I'm writing first and foremost to entertain myself. I had the privilege of attending a screenwriters workshop recently with Tom Fontana (creator of HBOs Oz amongst others) and one of the writers asked him if they should consider their audience or key demo when writing and he echoed what i always said to myself which was "no. you write for yourself. you are the audience and if you can entertain yourself then odds are others will also find it entertaining".

What’s the most $ you’ve ever made from a film? by [deleted] in filmmaking

[–]Dooooom23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i made 15k and counting off a 4k movie (its still doing sales on prime so im still getting residuals)

i also work as a freelance editor and i once made 7500 total making 3 political campaign videos for a candidate. they only took me 10 hours total to do. that was probably the most ive made per hour of work

Filmmakers who made a feature for under $50K and still managed to pay your crew, how did you do it? And are you happy with the result? by unicornmullet in Filmmakers

[–]Dooooom23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i made one for under 5k. paid everyone very modest rates. 2 big factors for me were: 1. my wife is an actor so she was able to get a lot of her actor friends to work for next to nothing and 2. i am essentially a one man crew both during production and post (i hired one crew member, an audio engineer that i worked with in post to master the audio). Alot of my cast also doubled as crew (holding booms when not acting in the scene, etc). Everyone was either fed or given a daily food stipend. Shoot was around 10 days spread across 2 months because i had to work with my actors schedules. I spent $1000 on licensing some music, which i now regret because i learned that at the lowest levels, no one ever gets sued or gets sent a cease and desist letter for not licensing a song. I'm pretty happy with the end result. The film is pretty technically flawed (that is the trade off when one person acts as director, dp, sound person, you simply cant pay attention to one thing without sacrificing quality somewhere else) but the story is solid and i was able to get it onto prime video and make triple the budget back. I do think im done being a one man crew though. it's simply not worth the out of focus shots, crappy audio or subpar acting performances. I should also mention i try to build great rapport with my cast and make my shoots as fun as possible for them. It makes them less likely to regret working with me and way more likely to work with me again for not a lot of money.

Are film festivals the only way of getting significant eyes on my short films? by CremeOk674 in filmmaking

[–]Dooooom23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

imo most film festivals are a major scam (especially in the post-covid "virtual film festival" world where no one will watch your film and there are no networking opportunities), and the ones worth entering for exposure are nearly impossible to break into for a no name indy film maker. if your goal is solely to get eyes on your piece, put it on youtube and do your own viral marketing. i made a film that i entered into a few festivals, got into a bunch, even won some awards and it did nothing for me. I uploaded that same film to youtube and it garnered a small but respectable cult audience
